Weather
Wind
From where do the seasons come?
• Flashlight activity…
• Tilt – the earth is tilted (23.5⁰) instead of spinning straight up and down; it is tilted to its side
• Season - part of the year that has the same kind of weather pattern
Seasons and Tilt• The tilt of the Earth influences the seasons
of Earth• Indirect sunlight mostly hits during winter
• Direct sunlight mostly hits during summer

Heating of Land and Water
• Does water heat differently than land?• Scientific Method• Read through Ch. 12 Sect. 6 (p.419-421)
Local Winds
• Wind – the horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure
• Local wind – air that blows over a short distance
• Sea breeze – local wind that blows from water or lake towards land
• Land breeze – flow of wind from land to a body of water
Global Winds
• Global wind – air that blows steadily from specific directions over long distances– How do they develop? temp. diff b/t equator and
poles• Coriolis Effect – when Earth’s rotation makes a
normally straight line curved
Doldrums and Horse Latitudes
• Doldrums – areas near equator with little or no wind
• Horse Latitudes – another calm area where sailors used to throw their horses overboard because of little or no movement– Latitude – parallel lines that are an
equal distance from the equator
• Trade Winds - wind that blows from the horse latitudes and blows west; Coriolis effect turns these winds west
• Prevailing Westerlies - Wind that blows from west to East

To play this game…• Use the paper given to you to write down 4 words that are
on the following screen.• You will add all of these words to a “hat” and then pull a
card out. • You CANNOT look at THE CARD• Stick it to your forehead (or back) with tape and walk
around the room.• Describe the word on your partner so that they can guess
the word. • DO NOT CHEAT!
• DO NOT SAY YOUR PARTNER’S WORD
(if you do, you’re out)
