Weathering and ErosionWhat happens to a rock that has been rained on for HUNDREDS of years? What about a rock that has had STRONG winds blowing on it for hundreds of years? What about TWO rocks that have been grinding against each other for hundreds of years?
Weathering and ErosionWe call the process of rocks wearing down WEATHERING.

Weathering and Erosion
Weathering usually happens when something slowly SQUEEZES AND PUSHES its way into a rock.
This type of weathering can be caused by water, ice, or plant roots.
Weathering and ErosionErosion is the process of TRANSPORTING and DEPOSITING small pieces of rock and soil in a new location.
SedimentaryThose small pieces of rock can be glued together to form sedimentary rock. The cement that holds sediments together are actually MINERAL CRYSTALS, usually from groundwater.
Sedimentary
SedimentaryThere are two main types:Well sortedPoorly sorted
Sedimentary
Well sortedPoorly sorted
Sedimentary
Well sortedWhere have you seen well sorted particles and pieces of rock before?
Sedimentary
Sand, like in a desert, can become sandstone after millions of years of cementation
SedimentaryMud (or silt) can be cemented to form shale.
SedimentaryGravel can be cemented to form breccia.
Sedimentary
Can you think of somewhere you have seen poorly sorted rocks?Poorly sorted
SedimentaryThis is an example of a poorly sorted sedimentary rock.
SedimentaryLandslide debris can be cemented together to form conglomerate rocks
Sedimentary
Well sorted or Poorly sorted?
Sedimentary
Well sorted. The particles are all the same size
Sedimentary
Well sorted or poorly sorted?
Sedimentary
Poorly sorted. The particles in this rock are all different sizes
Sedimentary
Well sorted, or poorly sorted?
Sedimentary
Well sorted. The particles in this rock are all very small
Sedimentary
Well sorted, or poorly sorted?
Sedimentary
Poorly sorted. There are very large and very small particles in this rock
Sample Test QuestionA sample of rock has visible small, round pebbles cemented together with smaller-grained material. Which type of rock is the sample?A. igneousB. sedimentaryC. metamorphicD. Not enough information to answer.
