WEATHERING:
- cementation and compaction of weathered material on the earth’s surface creates sedimentary rocks
Weathering is the process of breaking down rocks and minerals into smaller pieces by water, wind, and ice.
-Sedimentary rocks are formed from broken pieces of rocks. These broken pieces of rock are called sediments.
-The word "Sedimentary" comes from the root word "Sediment".- Usually formed in water
- formed in layers
3 GROUPS OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKSFragmental( clastic): made up of different sized particles.
EX: Clay and Sandstone
Organic: Form from the accumulation of plant and/or animal remainsEx: coal and some forms of limestone
Chemical: deposited by settling of materials from a solution in seawater. (evaporation) -Evaporites include; rock salt and
Gypsum
Mineral crystals are made as the shallow water that has flooded the bottom of Death Valley evaporates. Courtesy of Martin Miller, University of Oregon
