ALD Nano Delivers FirstCommercial Reactor to aBattery Materials Factory

ALD Nano delivered its first commercial reactor system to a customer in Q1 2019.The customer’s battery materials factory is supplying the growing North American

battery materials market for electric vehicles. Our proprietary continuous vibratingreactor (CVR) system is supporting the preparation of cathode active materials(CAMs) by applying an atomic layer deposition (ALD) film that increases batterycycle life and provides other benefits. This use of ALD coatings displaces traditionaldry and wet coatings for CAMs at competitive economics and commercial scale. TheCVR system we delivered can process about 3 tons of CAMs per day with excellentQC and high reliability.

We are now supporting integration of this CVR system into our customer’s facility in2019. We’re estimating the full lifecycle cost at less than $1 per kilogram of CAMsprocessed. This lifecycle cost includes capex, opex and IP license fees. As wecontinue to innovate in the quickly-evolving CAMs market, we are excited to supportthe leading battery materials companies as well as battery cell, automotive andconsumer electronics OEMs with our proprietary coating process and equipment.

ALD Nano CAM CoatingsHighlighted in BASF

Presentation

ALD Nano’s innovations in coatings were recently highlighted in a talk given by Dr.Hartmann Leube, Senior Vice President New Technologies at BASF, during theLithium Battery Chemistry Symposium at the Advanced Automotive BatteryConference in France. BASF is the leading chemical supplier to the automotiveindustry, and Dr. Leube’s talk illustrated how and why electromobility is transformingthe industry: through advanced coatings on CAMs. BASF has issued a series ofpress releases over the past few years announcing their entry into the CAMs marketincluding committing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars for a CAMs productionfactory in Europe, joint ventures with Toda Kogyo in Japan and the US, materialsupply agreements with Norilsk, etc.

In his talk, “Advanced Coating Technologies to Boost Performance of NCM CathodeActive Materials (CAM)” Dr. Leube discussed how e-mobility applications, with theirneed for high-energy density cells, require cathode material manufacturers to pushthe nickel content of CAMs to higher levels. BASF is developing advanced coatingtechnologies for CAMs, including our Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) technology, tomeet the needs of its future customers. Dr. Luebe highlighted ALD Nano’s delivery ofspecialty coatings on CAM, including coating on particles, as a key partnerinnovation in these performance improvements.

In our next issue of ALD Nano Enews we plan to bring you a landmark story aboutpublished research at the University of Colorado Boulder that for the first timepresents a clear understanding of what occurs at the angstrom scale for ALD films onCAMs, the nature of the films, and the associated new IP at ALD Nano.

Advanced Automotive Battery Conference At the end of January, ALD Nano attended theAdvanced Automotive Battery Conference in France.ALD Nano will attend, sponsor and have a booth atthe expo for the U.S.-based version of the AABCconference in June in San Diego, California; detailsare included in the Calendar section of this ALDNano Enews, below.

ADAPT Expo and Public Meeting ALD Nano attended the first Alliance for theDevelopment of Additive Processing Technologies(ADAPT) Expo and Annual Public Meeting inJanuary. We exhibited alongside several otherexhibitors, attended a dinner with ADAPT membersand guests, including Colorado State SenatorTammy Story, and other industry professionals andfaculty.

As a member of ADAPT, we find value in access toresearch and collaboration opportunities with the 22current members and 11 non-member researchpartners, which are all focused on additivemanufacturing data and processes. Learn moreabout ADAPT here.

NextManufacturing Meeting Members of ALD Nano’s leadership team attendedCarnegie Mellon University’s NextManufacturingCenter semi-annual member meeting in January.NextManufacturing is a leading center for additivemanufacturing (AM). During the member meeting,we participated in research updates presented byfaculty and graduate students, presented anoverview about ALD Nano and its technologies, andjoined more than 20 other members, spanning theindustrial, government, nonprofit, and academicsectors, to discuss advances in additivemanufacturing research.

Particle ALD Review Paper Published inJournal of Nanoparticle Research Now

Available In the last volume of ALD Nano Enews, we sharedthat ALD Nano cofounder and University of Coloradoprofessor Alan Weimer had a particle ALD reviewpaper accepted into the Journal of NanoparticleResearch. That article, “Particle atomic layerdeposition” has been published, and can be viewedand downloaded here.

Article summary: Starting with a history of particleALD, Professor Weimer presents the chemistry thatinforms a number of particle ALD applications, demonstrating why this deposition method createsnearly perfect nanothick films on both external andinternal nanoparticle surfaces. The research alsodiscusses agitated reactor processing, both atomicand molecular layer deposition, coating of bothinorganic and polymer particles, and coatings onmicron and nano scale particles and nanotubes.Although many commercial applications are yet tobe discovered, the paper highlights near-termcommercial applications for particle ALD.

This summer, Professor Weimer will present novelresearch on CAMs called, “Why ALD Nanofilms onCathode Materials Improve Li-ion BatteryPerformance.” It is commonly assumed that severalALD cycles form a uniform film that optimally is thinenough to facilitate lithium diffusion while blockingside reactions of the electrolyte with the cathodematerial. Through his research, Professor Weimershows that certain ALD films are not uniform andgrow preferentially on metal oxides, stabilizing themin the presence of electrolyte without blocking lithiumintercalation pathways. The implications of thisresearch have the potential for meaningfulcommercial and research applications in improvingthe performance of lithium ion batteries.
