MAP Measures of Academic Progress

• Computer based, adaptive assessment• Assesses student growth and the student’s

instructional level• Aligned with Colorado State Standards• Measured with a RiT score – increments of 10• CCSD uses the Survey with Goals test

Each test takes about an hour to completeReading test has approximately 42 itemsLanguage test has approximately 52 itemsMath test has approximately 52 itemsScience test has approximately 64 items

• No retesting studentsStudents who retest on MAP generally do not score higher and

typically have a higher standard error of measure the second time. NWEA will throw away the score with the higher SEM. If you feel a need to retest a student, contact the School MAP Coordinator for guidelines.

• Timelines/Windows/Test ScheduleSeasons are set by NWEA. A&E fits windows for testing for

CCSD within those seasons designed to allow schools some flexibility.

• CRF – Class Roster FileStudents and teachers are pulled and linked from PowerSchool

on the dates listed on the MAP Window Calendar. It is important to know these dates and have PowerSchool information as you wish to have your reports link students to teachers.

• Data PullThe MAP data is pulled from NWEA approximately every two

weeks from NWEA and placed into the CCSD Data Warehouse. A few day after the pull, you will see the student scores appear in BObj reports.

Accommodations All Students

MAP is a standardized assessment. With that in mind, it is very important that each student is given equal opportunity to the test. Testing accommodations are a key element for that opportunity• MAP is not a limited time test

If a student needs more time, pause test to resume and finish test later (or another day)• Calculator (appears on screen when allowed)• Reading a word• Proctor may read a difficult word to any student in

math and science as long as no clues are given

• Proctor may NOT read symbols or numbers

Accommodations Special Education Students

Accommodation must be noted in IEP/504• MAP is not a limited time test

If a student needs more time, pause test to resume and finish test later

or another day) • Signing directions for deaf students• Braille – notification due to A&E prior to CRF submission• Calculator (appears when allowed)• Simplify language and directions• Magnification devices• Noise buffers• Sticky notes for tracking as they move down the screen• Math Manipulative - counting dots, number lines, 100’s charts, counting

beans

One on one setting accommodations:• Oral Presentation (Math and Science Only – (read text only no symbols or

numbers)• Student reading test aloud to self (all subjects)

Web-Based MAP (WBM)• School Roles • Administrator• Instructor - • Proctor

Teachers will have both the roles of the Instructor and the Proctor

• MARC – staff site – As staff are added to the file, they will receive an email

to guide them to the web page and giving them their login and temporary password

• MSTC – student testing site

Proctor Guidelines• Required training

• Required training forms

• Required and Recommended items available in test room for proctor and students

Page 12: Web-Based MAP Training 2012-2013

Required trainingMAP is a standardized assessment. With that in mind, it is very important that each student is given equal opportunity to the test. Consistent proctoring guidelines are a key element for that opportunity.

• Each proctor will review the training materials provided by NWEA And Assessment & Evaluation

• A form will be available for the proctor to sign once the materials have been reviewed.

• Schools are responsible to keep the signed forms for the current school year

Page 13: Web-Based MAP Training 2012-2013

Required materials in testing room

MAP is a standardized assessment. As a standardized test, it is important that all students have the same directions and materials when testing. Required materials are key elements for that opportunity.• Directions written for students on board

• Test Session Name and Password• NWEA MAP Preparing Students for Testing -

Proctor Instructions to Students• Scratch paper and pencils at each computer • Office phone numbers to contact in case of

emergency or questions

Page 14: Web-Based MAP Training 2012-2013

Recommended materials available in testing room

• Clock• Testing/Do Not Disturb sign on door• Closed doors/windows for quiet environment• Optional additional directions written for students

on boardPlease find your seat and sit quietly until I

read you the directionsWhen you are finished please raise your

hand. then you may: read a book, sit quietly until others are finished,…

Page 15: Web-Based MAP Training 2012-2013

Testing EnvironmentStudents and proctors will do better in an atmosphere that is conducive to testing. Here are a few suggestions to help:

• Limited interruptions• Closed doors for a quiet environment• Closed window shades to eliminate glare on screens• Students take the test warm ups in their Lockdown Browser • Student directions are read prior to beginning the test (use

the NWEA MAP Preparing Students for Testing - Proctor Instructions to Students

• Student expectations are set prior to testing

Example: When a testing environment changed and the expectation was set that students were not allowed to talk in the testing room after completion of the test…one student’s RIT score jumped 20 points.

Page 16: Web-Based MAP Training 2012-2013

School GuidelinesEach school will have certain guidelines that will need to be followed for unique circumstances. Ask your school’s MAP Coordinator these questions prior to proctoring tests:

• What do I do if there is a fire drill or power outage? • Where do I send a sick or disruptive student?• Who do I contact if I need a quick break?• What do I instruct students to do when they are

finished testing?

Page 17: Web-Based MAP Training 2012-2013

Preparing for testingIt is very important to give each student an equal opportunity to test in a standardized environment. Testing environment is a key element for that opportunity

• Do you have your test session prepared in the system?

• Are there instructions written on the board for the students with the test session name and password for the test session?

• Are scratch paper and pencils available?• Stagger the start times by a few seconds. This

keeps from bogging down the system.• Is there paper in the printer to print the results

page at the end of the session or do you have a form to write down the results?

Page 18: Web-Based MAP Training 2012-2013

Preparing for testingIt is very important to give each student an equal opportunity to test in a standardized environment. Testing environment is a key element for that opportunity

• Are students comfortable using:Mouse, keyboard, scroll bars, pop-up calculator

• Have the students taken the warm ups?• Do the students know what do they do when they

are finished testing, need a break or have a question?

• Inform them that this is an adaptive test. When they are challenged with difficult questions, it means they are doing well

• Remind the students to remain quiet throughout and after their test.

Page 19: Web-Based MAP Training 2012-2013

Active Proctoring Means• Read student directions to students

NWEA MAP Preparing Students for Testing –

Proctor Instructions to Students• Stay in the room• Walk around the room • Monitor student progress

If a student is not engaged, pause the testDirect student with options available (read/sit quietly/return to class)

• Maintain focus on student testing. Please watch the testing progression in your test session, DO NOT read or grade papers.

Page 20: Web-Based MAP Training 2012-2013

Problem Items/Refreshing Items

• Occasionally a test item will not appear correctly. If this happens you can refresh the screen refresh the student’s screen using F5. If refreshing the screen does not solve the issue, write down the item number found in the top of the student screen and complete a problem item report after the testing session is over. At that point you may need to terminate the test.
