For the Love of Horses is a heartfelt story about a life familiar to many young Kiwis who love horses – the trials and tears of Pony Club, the
joy of riding bareback, and the pressures of adolescence and competitive showjumping. It is also the story of an unlikely childhood dream coming true.
Vicki, Kelly and Amanda Wilson are three of New Zealand’s most prominent and popular Show Jumping riders. In early 2012 they saved 11 wild Kaimanawa horses from slaughter during the
biannual muster. Flaunting convention, they began working with the wild horses in the hopes they could raise the profile of the horses and prove they were both trainable and talented.
Of the 11 horses they saved, there were four adult stallions and two lead mares; horses that many believed could not be safely domesticated. The story that follows is one of infinite compassion, unconditional love and unparalleled perseverance as the three sisters worked together for one year to tame and train the horses. Just 15 days after the horses were mustered from the wild, the first mare was ridden and only seven weeks later the 8 year old stallion, Gizmo, competed at his first show. These milestones were all cause for celebration. Throughout the year, every horse was allowed to progress at their own speed, some taking 250 days to achieve what others had in a mere three weeks. Their success with the 17 year old stallion, Major, was perhaps the most inspiring, defying popular belief that older stallions are too difficult to train. There is now a Stallion Challenge to save more of these majestic animals.
The journey was not without its challenges though and For the Love of Horses captures the raw spirit of the wild horses, showing that although they may be difficult to train and at times dangerous, they are also willing and adaptable to change when trained correctly.
Their work with the wild horses gained international recognition after they won the prestigious FEI Solidarity Award, ahead of Olympic gold medalist Carl Hester, and the Best Use of Social Media in Australia and New Zealand during the 2013 Equestrian Social Media Awards. It has been a life changing journey for the three rural sisters and what started out as unassuming project has firmly catapulted them onto the world stage for their innovative approach to raising awareness about the plight of the wild horse.
From the mountains to the competition arena, the Wilson sisters have proven that every wild horse has the potential to be special if they are trained with compassion and understanding. In just one year, their journey has challenged people’s mind sets across every corner of the globe and it is hoped that thousands of wild horses will benefit from their example.
This touching book is an inspiration, and Kelly Wilson’s recounting of this true story is a perfect book for all of those who love horses and want to know more about this fascinating breed and the Wilson sisters work with horses. More information is available on the Kaimanawa Heritage Horses

• In 1876 the first wild horses were recorded in the Kaimanawa Ranges.
• The Army in 1941 released horses from the mounted rifle cavalry units at Waiouru when a strangles epidemic threatened.
• The 2014 DoC brought in 172 horses, and homes were found for 157.
• In 2012, 191 horses were brought in and 119 found homes.
• The sustainable number in the ranges has been determined to be 300 and entire family bands are brought in to be hopefully rehomed.
• Even the older stallions are proven to be winners in the Stallion Challenge at Equidays and Horse of the Year.
• Varied genes over the years have made them larger than standard pony, calm and surefooted.

At 25, I bought my first property after much hand wringing. The
prospect of carrying a 17 percent mortgage - standard in the ‘90s - caused some hesitation. Then a property investor acquaintance gave me some food for thought. First he told me if you buy between the airport and the central city, the value will grow. Then he said the time to buy is when you can afford to.
Well, I jumped in and never looked back. Today my investments have proven themselves and property is my life. In addition to my own portfolio, I am principal of property management specialists Quinovic’s Ponsonby office and have an impressive number of clients trusting me with their own investments.
Auckland’s property market today is different, but those first tips are still reliable. And after two decades of buying and selling properties I’ve picked up a few more to pass on.
Auckland is comprised of many mini-property markets, but overall is still a reliable wealth generator for investors and this is
unlikely to change as the city is expected to grow by 33 percent by 2031. It might be a decade down the track, but if you can afford the deposit and to service the loan then you should do it.
A temptation for first time investors may be to realise quick capital gains in the kind of heated market Auckland has lately experienced, but a
little extra thought may stay their hand. For example, lending restrictions on low-deposit
buyers have cooled things down in 2014, but even so the average Auckland home price reached a record high of $738,876. And now there are calls to lift those restrictions, which would drive prices ever higher.
The point is that nobody can predict what the market is going to do in the short term. But Auckland is going to continue to grow and the owners who do really well are always the ones who hold on.

With the market now filled with so many property experts and advisors, we are surprised that
there are still “classic errors” and common misconceptions we encountered through new clients joining our practice. I am sure it is not intentional or abusive tax planning. Often it is because the clients have not sought proper advice or just a case of Chinese whispers…no pun intended!
I feel it is opportune to share some of these “classics” with you and dispel some myths along the way. This is intended to be a bit of light reading as we approach the festive season towards the end of the year.
I do not need to file a tax return if I am making lossesThis is completely wrong. Anyone who derives rental income or loss has to file a tax return every financial year irrespective whether you can or cannot claim the loss against your other personal income.
In fact, we are seeing IRD pursuing clients for tax returns for multiple outstanding years.
I need a company before I can claim expensesThis is completely false. Broadly speaking, the deductibility rules are the same across all ownership structures.
However, in the event of a rental loss, ability to access these losses can vary depends on the structure. For example, if the property is jointly owned, then the rental profit or loss has to be split equally when filing with IRD. You cannot cherry pick who gets what percentage of the loss.
Charging GST on residential rentUnless you are a property trader or developer, rent derived from residential investment properties are exempt from GST. This means you do not and cannot charge GST on the rent received.
In fact, if you have charged GST on the rent, then it can be construed that you are conducting and holding yourself out as a property trader albeit unintended. You could have a hard time explaining to IRD when they come for you.
I cannot sell my rental properties unless I have kept them for more than 10 yearsThis is certainly not true. Generally speaking, the 10 year ownership rule came as a result of property traders who also invest in properties concurrently to prove their investment intent
was a long term one.
If you have never been associated with any property trading activities and you are a genuine property investor then you are free to sell your rental properties at a time that suited your circumstances.
Obviously, if you are selling a property that has only been rented for a very short time then IRD would be keen to understand your rationale of selling it to ensure there was no speculative intent.
OK to sell one every yearI am not aware of any tax provisions that allow this to happen.
If there is intent at the time of purchase that the property will be earmarked for sale in a year’s time, then it is arguable whether you are a genuine investor or maybe you should have
been classified as a property trader right from the start.
IRD will never know Let’s not kid ourselves here. IRD will always know. In fact, given that IRD Property Compliance Teams are now set up nationwide, it is only a matter of time.
We are aware that IRD is recruiting IT specialist whose job is to distil information that is readily available on any digital platform into a summarised format so that IRD can follow up with the taxpayers at their leisure.
I hate to be the drama queen here. Regrettably, as the old saying goes… it won’t happen overnight but it will happen.
Still claiming depreciation on buildingsThe government changed the depreciation rules in the 2010 Budget. From 1 April 2011 onwards, you have to stop claiming depreciation on the building value of the cost price. However, you can continue claiming depreciation on chattels e.g. carpets, white ware, etc.
Depreciation RecoveryPeople are still forgetting to set aside money from the sale proceeds to pay back tax on depreciation recovery.
Unless you obtained a registered valuation
showing that the increase in property value was solely a result of the land value increasing, otherwise, it is inevitable some if not all of the depreciation claimed historically will have to be returned as income in the year of sale.
There is no time bar on this. You are liable to pay tax on the depreciation recovery even if you have owned the property for more than 70 years!
Australian property promoters are backThis is my favourite bugbear. I am seeing a resurgence of Aussie property investment seminars and promoters operating in shopping malls – maybe caused by the stronger Kiwi dollar and the lower Aussie interest rates.
Kiwis who invest in Australian properties have an obligation to file tax return on both sides of the Tasman. In fact, there are specific and quirky tax rules that apply to principal and interest repayments on overseas loans and repayments.
These are not Aussie specific tax rules. In fact, the same quirky tax rules apply to all rental properties situated overseas. Please consult your tax advisor and chartered accountant before purchasing properties overseas.
Classic errors that still come across our desks…

It was a pleasure to have met Ryan and Matt – both my husband, Lloyd, and myself found them to be positive, conscientious and well grounded in their attitude. They were very helpful advising us re the Reserve Price for our home nearer to the Auction Day and that took an enormous load of our shoulders. We must admit selling a home can be somewhat stressful – but, Matt and Ryan helped us through that period. Auction Day proved to be an outstanding success and we are very grateful for that. Given we were to sell again, without a doubt, we would turn to Ryan and Matt. “Nothing ventured – Nothing gained”. Keep up the good work, for Lloyd and myself it was truly an amazing experience we will not forget. Lloyd and Helena

A renovated 3 bedroom + study, 2 bathroom 1920’s trans villa with tandem off-street parking. Forget about all that though - it’s a real entertainer with great indoor/outdoor flow to sun-soaked decking, pool and the cricket pitch beyond.
I’m biased but I think this is the best buy in Grey Lynn at the moment. Why pay not a heap less for an absolute South facing do-up? You can’t change your aspect or location. This will be sold - so be cheeky, make an offer, as the vendor will be looking at everything!
