Background ________________________________________________________________________________ New Mornings is a Christian, not-for-profit mental health support organisation based in Ulverstone.

To see thriving, productive northwest Tasmanian communities with excellent mental health.
Mission Statement
Reaching out with the love of Jesus Christ to increase community capacity in mental health.
Values
New Mornings has a Christian Worldview and follows Biblical principles:
• practically supporting those in need
• encouraging the disheartened
• helping children to thrive
• practising generosity through humble service
New Mornings applies these principles to increase the capacity of communities to have good mental health.
Mental Health Support Goals
1. To prevent mental illness by equipping individuals to grow in resilience and by increasing their
community connections
2. To encourage and equip people who support others with mental illness
3. To support and equip individuals with mental illness to maximise recovery and help prevent relapse
Incorporation
Operating as New Mornings, New Mornings Ministries Inc was incorporated as in August 2006 and endorsed
as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) in October 2009.
Basic Objects of the Association: “Relief from the suffering and distress associated with depression, anxiety
and related mental illness by means of support groups, counselling, psycho-education, suicide prevention
strategies and development of interpersonal skills, in order to fulfil needs not able to be catered for by other
mental health providers within the community. We aim to make our services available to all members of the
community without discrimination.”
Board of Management
The New Mornings Board provides active oversight of New Mornings’ services. The list of Board members and
the public officer for 2019-2020 are found on the final page of the attached Independent Auditors Report.

1. Rhythm to Recovery Drumbeat
• Professional development in facilitation skills, managing challenging behaviours and
social/emotional learning in the context of a drumming program.
• 3 day course held in Hobart in January 2020 attended by 3 volunteers
2. ChildSafe
• Training developed by Scripture Union adopted as compulsory training for all New Mornings
volunteers working with children or vulnerable adults. 22 volunteers had completed first round of
training by end June 2020
3. Australian Childhood Foundation
• Mentor coordinator attended on line workshop The Affect of COVID-19 on Traumatised Children in
May 2020
4. Mama Manon
• Mentor coordinator attended on line workshop Activities for Traumatised Children in May 2020

New Mornings Outreach Programs ________________________________________________________________________________
School Mentoring Programs
New Mornings had a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with each of the following schools for
student mentoring. Schools made a financial contribution of $125/ mentor/term.
1. West Ulverstone Primary School: Mentors were provided for 6 students in grades 4-6
2. Romaine Park Primary School: Mentors were provided for 11 students in grades 3-6
3. Ulverstone Secondary College (renamed form Ulverstone High School in 2019): Mentors were
provided for 12 students in grades 7-9.
4. Parklands High School: One mentor transitioned with mentee from RPPS G6 to PHS G7
A BBQ & social event was held for all mentors, mentees and their families at Ulverstone waterslide
January 2020

Supporting Wellness in Families Together (SWIFT)
New Mornings worked in partnership with West Ulverstone Primary School (WUPS) and Ulverstone
Neighbourhood House (UNH) to run a family-focussed trauma recovery program for families affected by
family violence, child abuse and neglect in West Ulverstone between October 2019-June 2020. The
focus for this project is community engagement through participation in community activities and
provision of opportunities for supporting and learning new skills. The 3 year project continues until
September, 2022
New Mornings (NM) staff and volunteers connected with parents and students in the West Ulverstone
community through the following activities and events:

2. Assistance provided by NM at the following West Ulverstone Primary School events:
• Ran a “station” and BBQ at WUPS Wellbeing Expo Day, October 2019
• Ran BBQ at WUPS 60th Birthday celebrations, September 2019
• Book Sales day and ‘Welcome to kinder’ days (February 2020)
3. Assistance provided by NM at Ulverstone Neighbourhood House events and activities:
• Facilitated Community Kids events at UNH in August and September & November 2019
• Ran stall at UNH Mental health Expo October 2019
• Launch into Learning Playgroup (fortnightly during T3 & 4, 2019)
• UNH closed first half 2020 due to large building project funded by Tasmanian Community Fund
4. Assistance provided by NM at Central Coast Community Shed:
• Facilitated student program with 4 students and volunteers from the CCCS Term 3, 4, 2019
5. Other SWIFT related activities:
• 3 Emergency relief packages delivered to COVID-19 impacted West Ulverstone families in

conjunction with St Vincent de Paul & Loaves and Fishes.
• 100+ bottles of Hand Sanitiser made to hand out to people in need.
• A Rhythm to Recovery drumbeat boys group commenced in Ulverstone
Secondary College in Term 2
We are grateful for additional funding awarded by Presbyterian
Care Tasmania to continue SWIFT during 2019-2022.
Grief & Loss Support Groups
New Mornings grief and loss support groups are aimed at adults struggling to work through grief after the
death or disappearance of a loved one, breakdown of a long-term relationship or any other significant loss.
Four groups for adults were run in Ulverstone & Devonport during 2019-2020:
• One women’s group during July - August 2019
• Second women’ s group October - December 2019
• One men’s group October - December 2019
• One women’s group during March-May 2020, had to revert to Zoom meetings to complete
First Steps Lounge
First Steps Lounge opened at the New Mornings offices in West Ulverstone in July 2018. It is a coffee lounge
for women who are isolated by or living with mental ill health, or struggling through grief of some kind. It
provides a drop-in opportunity to a safe meeting place for registered participants:
A Mental Health Support Worker began in February 2020 to with NDIS clients and First Steps Lounge ladies.
• It is open on Monday afternoons and Friday mornings during school terms
• Average number of guests per week = 8
• No of volunteer facilitators = 6
• New brochure and welcome packs developed for visitors to lounge
• Activities at the lounge have included:
- Pastel art class (Term 3, 2019)
- Card making for Christmas (Term 4, 2019)
- Participation in New Hope Garden project throughout year
- Pamper Sessions (Term 4, 2019)
- Half day outing to Sisters Beach February 2020
First Steps Lounge was closed from end March to mid July 2010 due to COVID-
19 shutdown but guests were contacted regularly by phone calls and their
own closed Facebook page

New Hope Garden Project
This project aims to provide a place of reflection and to assist with the well-being of anyone vising New
Mornings. It is also aimed at providing low cost nutritious food and improving the physical & mental health
of people helping with the chickens and garden. In partnership with West Ulverstone Primary School (WUPS),
students will be exposed to range of garden activities to inspire home food production and increase their
awareness of the environment and sustainability.
During 2019-20:
• Garden development has been quite dramatic and rebranded “New Hope Garden” and bought under
the SWIFT project banner
• A grant received to build a garden shed/greenhouse from RACT community fund
• Small groups of WUPS students visited the garden to learn some basics about care for permaculture
garden, plant, weed, water, and even dig a frog pond
• New boundary fences were erected with financial assistance from Lions Club of Ulverstone and the
Whishaw family
• West Ulverstone Primary School received grant to run a student Grief & Loss Group based in the New
Hope Garden in June 2020.
• Garden development is ongoing, with plans to expand the garden as capacity permits

Administrative & Other
• Staff Planning & Team Building Day held February 2020
• COVID lockdown - As with many organisations the COVID-19 lockdown had quite an impact on New Morning activities in early - mid 2020. The office was closed from March to June, 2020 but many activities, such as mentoring and FSL continued to move forward in a socially-distanced way - via phone, social media etc. A COVID-19 safety management plan was developed and the office re-opened on 1st July, 2020
• Completion of an AV room and set up for Zoom meetings and on-line training. A grant was received from the Primary Health Council for an annual Zoom licence to assist organisations through change of circumstances relating to CO VID-19.

• New Rules of Association were completed, submitted and adopted in March 2020
• New banner developed (as pictured)
• Thank you video recorded by staff and ministry co-ordinators and distributed to all volunteers for National Volunteer Week in May 2020
