Your Mission:You are a tourist that will be traveling around the world. You will visit each

continent and visit selected countries within that region to discover more about it’s unique culture and people. During your travels you will keep a journal of experiences and observations in each place you visit. These journal entries will later help you in the project that you will be doing as a summary of your travels.

Make sure for each country you college a diverse amount of information so that you will be prepared to do a final project in the end. For example if you were visiting the United States (which you will not be) you could include things like: Facts about the Statue of Liberty, Talk about some of the monuments in Washington DC, beaches in California, Football is a major sport, Hamburgers and Hot Dogs are a common food, English is the official language etc.

The ProcessProject Options:

Narrational: Create a small children’s book with illustrations and an informative story about your country. Logical-Quantitative: Make a power point presentation to present to the class about the statistics of the country you picked such as it’s GDP, Literacy Rate, Birth and Death Rates etc. Foundational: Look at the religion and traditions that are unique to your country and write a 2-3 page analytical paper. Aesthetic: Create a painting/ drawing/ collage of your country. Experiential: Create a mini-informative lesson (8-10 mins) where you give the class a brief synopsis of your country,

Creativity Project does not display that very much thought was put into it.

Project has potential but lacks individuality.

Project is unique and shows a good amount of effort.

Project goes above and beyond the call of duty. The ideas are original and engaging.

Mechanics and Grammar (If there is text)

Grammatical errors appear often in text. Mechanics are the same. Spell Check appears to not have been used at all.

Grammar and mechanics need work. Spell Check appears to be the only means of editing.

Grammar does not appear to be a consistent or major problem

Minimal mechanical/ grammatical errors if any.

Organization It is hard to distinguish what exactly the aim of the project is.

Organization seems to be taken into consideration but needs work.

The end product is well organized but could be touched up.

The project is well organized and thought out.

This lesson was developed with the intent that the students be exposed to other cultures and presented basic information on other countries around the world. It is intended to be a brief introduction to this subject area and does not go very deep into detail but allows the student to have fun while making discoveries.

To begin, the students will “travel” to all seven continents via websites packed full with helpful/ academic information about several countries in the region. The students are only required to travel to one country per region for a total of seven countries (Antarctica included as one). At the end each student is required to prepare a final product that sums up their findings. They have the option of taking a narrational, logical/quantitative, foundational, aesthetic or experiential approach to the final product. The narrational approch calls for a children’s book that is very informative, but it would be a fictional story. Logical/quantitative would have the students make a power point basically reporting facts about the country such as it’s GDP. For foundational the student would write an analytical paper about the major religion in the area. For aesthetic the student would create a painting, drawing, comic or collage of what makes the country they picked unique. Finally, Experiantial would be a presentation to the class given orally and could include activities for the whole class to do (should be 8-10 mins).

While this lesson is very basic it is intended for high school aged students in the ninth grade. It is meant to be used briefly to introduce/ expose the students to cultural information.

The students will need some instruction as to what the point of this assignment is (can be found in the students portion of this WebQuest.

Social Studies Standards Addressed

•Recognize the relationships among the various parts of a nation's cultural life.•Learn about the mythology, legends, values and beliefs of a people.Creativity is challenged in this activity as is higher level thinking because not all students have one end product. The end product is left open for their own interpretation to test their creativity and critical thinking skills.

This should only take two class periods. The first class period actually collecting information, and the second brainstorming/starting the project. The project is intended to be done outside of the classroom but a little work time in class would not hurt.

It is my hopes that this is not too difficult for the instructor to understand.
