Lesson on formal and psychological themes in MC Escher’s work. Great for possible background reading assignment – for advanced students only ?

(4) Web Quest: Researching Symmetry and Transformations Describe an assignment or quest where students would use the resources you identified

above to learn about the topic and draw conclusions.

(A) Introduction (provide context for the quest) If you were to draw a straight line vertically down the middle of your face, would both halves of your face be identical? When you look at a butterfly are both wings exactly the same?

Are there any objects in nature, art, and mathematics that are truly "symmetric" and how are they symmetric?

In this WebQuest you will have the opportunity to explore the different kinds of symmetries and share your experiences with your classmates.

(B) Task (what is the goal of the quest)

Page 7: Web Resources Assignment - California State University ...gbs44811/Web Resources/Web Resources... · Web Resources 4-2 Topic you are searching for Search strings used # of good sites

Web Resources 4-7

You are members of an editorial staff about to publish a magazine whose focus is "symmetry and transformations." After studying all aspects of this topic by visiting appropriate websites, you will present your "magazine" to your teacher and class. Investigation of this topic will be from both real life and mathematical perspectives. Your "magazine" can be an e-zine or printed product and must demonstrate a clear understanding of the topic under investigation. Some of the illustrations for your magazine may be taken from the websites visited, but your final product must contain original artwork and photography.

(C) Process (what are the steps the students will go through)

By now you have been assigned to a group of four. You are all members of the editorial staff of a new magazine premiering in two weeks. Your first edition is to focus on symmetry and transformations. Decide among yourselves who will be the Editor-in-chief, the Head Writer, the Art Editor, and the Production Manager. After selecting your jobs, you will begin your research by clicking on the links below. After completing your research you will create your e-zine/magazine and be ready to present your e-zine/magazine to the class orally. The last task will be the creation of test questions. Go to the evaluation page to see the specific rubrics for each task.

The Editor-in-Chief is the one who decides which articles will go in the magazine. He may contribute written work or artwork. He will lead the discussions on the topics to be included in the magazine. After group discussion, he is the final decision maker. The Head Writer and Researcher is the one who writes some or all of the articles and edits work contributed by others. He is responsible for note taking as the group visits various assigned links on the Internet. He must make sure that the final written articles have no misspellings or grammatical errors. The Art Editor selects the artwork for the magazine and creates original artwork. He may create using a digital camera and any editing program installed on the computer. He may use any drawing program installed on the computer. He may use Broderbund's Print Shop to add special effects. He may enlist the contribution of others in the group, but he is the final decision maker when it comes to the art part of the magazine. He is responsible to see that the artwork matches the article for which it is chosen. The Production Manager is involved in all phases of the production of the magazine. He is the technician responsible for assembling the magazine and the final product. If it is in a printed and bound format, he is responsible for its assembly and collation. He will assign production jobs to the other members of the committee. He will need to produce 10 copies of the magazine. He is the technical advisor if the magazine is an e-zine. The e-zine can be produced using MSPowerPoint or as a series of web pages using any html editor. Work will be saved on a floppy or zipdisk and given to your teacher. You are now ready to begin your research. Here are the steps you will

follow:

You will visit each of the links below to gather information. Some of the links will tell you about the different kinds of symmetry and show you examples. Some of the examples will be from art, nature, or industry. Some of the links will show you drawings. You may follow the links on these pages to see other suggested activities with symmetry. You may wish to include some of these activities in your magazine.

Visit the links dealing with transformations. Try some of the sample questions on some of the sites to make sure you understand all of the concepts. Think of how you can best illustrate these ideas.

Having viewed all of the sites, you will meet as a committee and playing your assigned roles you will begin to create your magazine.

Finally, you will decide on a title for your magazine, create a table of contents, list staff members and their respective jobs, and credit sources.

When you are finished with your magazine, you will present it to the class as an oral presentation.

(D) Evaluation (how will the quest be evaluated)

Some groups will be creating an e-zine and other groups will create a printed magazine. Everyone will be rated for team work and oral presentation. Finally students will create test questions and take a traditional test to evaluate retention of the materials.

(5) Job search: Use Internet job search services to obtain two announcements for a teaching job in your

discipline, one within California, and one outside of California. Post screen shots of both job ads here

(6) School Information: use Dataquest http://dq.cde.ca.gov/dataquest/ Obtain standardized test scores for your school from the California State Department of

Education. Get a screen shot of the test results and interpret them (what do those scores tell you).

This screen shot is of CAHSEE test results for Pasadena High School, November 2007 (I couldn’t find results for 2008). The data supports several statistically valid conclusions at a glance. One is that more (7%) students passed the math portion of the exit exam than the English portion. This isn’t surprising. Also, Special Education and EL students passed the math exam at a noticeably lower rate (10% lower) than mainstream students did. This is also not surprising. (7) Professional Organization: Locate the web site for a professional organization related to your teaching discipline

(e.g. National Science Teacher Association, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, College Board, etc.) Identify the date and location of the next national meeting, and find the costs of airline flights necessary to take you from LAX to the site of the convention.

http://www.ccis.org/ (California Consortium of Independent Study) Next meeting: 3/2 – 3/4/09 in Sacramento Costs of airline flights, roundtrip from LAX:

(8) WWW Bookmarks/Favorites: Create a list of bookmarks (Firefox) or favorites (Explorer) of the best links you have found for use in a subject you teach. Organize the bookmarks/favorites into folders and subfolders and name them appropriately. Export your bookmarks/favorites file to an HTML file. (if you don’t know how to do this check your browser’s help pages) Open your list as an HTML page and post a screen shot of the HTML file here. BOOKMARKS
