USING THE FUEL ECONOMY GUIDEThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S.Department of Energy (DOE) produce the Fuel Economy Guide tohelp car buyers choose the most fuel-efficient vehicle that meetstheir needs. EPA compiles the fuel economy data, and DOEpublishes them in print and on the Web at www.fueleconomy.gov(see p. 2).

FUEL ECONOMY ESTIMATES

Each vehicle in this guide has two fuel economy estimates.

City represents urban driving, in which a vehicle is started inthe morning (after being parked all night) and driven in stop-and-go rush hour traffic.

Highway represents a mixture of rural and interstate highwaydriving in warmed-up vehicles, typical of longer trips in free-flowing traffic.

EPA miles-per-gallon (MPG) estimates are based on lab testingand are adjusted to reflect real-world driving conditions for anaverage U.S. motorist. Vehicles are tested in the same manner toallow fair comparisons. For answers to frequently asked questionsabout fuel economy estimates, visit www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/info.shtml.

WHY YOUR FUEL ECONOMY CAN VARY

A vehicle’s fuel economy is not a constant or fixed number; itvaries among vehicles of the same make and model, and it willvary over time for an individual vehicle. Many factors affect avehicle’s fuel economy:

When, where, and how the vehicle is driven: Frequent accel-eration and braking necessary in stop-and-go traffic and on hillyterrain hurt fuel economy, and aggressive driving (hard accelerat-ing and braking) reduces it even more. Cold weather can reduceMPG, since your engine doesn’t run efficiently until it is warmedup, and driving with a heavy load or with the air conditionerrunning can also reduce MPG.

Vehicle maintenance: A poorly tuned engine burns more fuel, sofuel economy will suffer if your engine is not in tune. Keeping tiresat the correct pressure and changing the air filter on a regularbasis can improve fuel economy. Also, new energy-saving motoroils can improve MPG.

Inherent variations in vehicles: Small variations in the wayvehicles are manufactured and assembled can cause MPGvariations among vehicles of the same make and model. Usually,differences are small, but a few drivers will see a marked deviationfrom the EPA estimates.

ANNUAL FUEL COST ESTIMATES

This guide provides annual fuel cost estimates for each vehicle.This estimate is based on the assumptions that you travel 15,000miles per year (55% under city driving conditions and 45% underhighway conditions) and that fuel costs $1.40/gallon for regularunleaded gasoline and $1.60/gallon for premium. Cost-per-gallonassumptions for vehicles that use other fuel types are discussed atthe beginning of those vehicle sections.

Withineach class, vehicles are listed alphabetically by manufacturer andmodel—vehicle models with different characteristics, includingtransmission type or engine size, are listed as different vehicles.Additional characteristics about the vehicle, such as valve or fuelsystem, may also be needed to distinguish between similarvehicles. This information is listed in the “Notes” column. Interiorvolume information is located in the index at the back of theGuide.

The diagram below explains the contents of a typical listing. Thevehicle make and model are listed in the first column. Additionalinformation on transmission type (e.g., automatic or manual) andthe number of gears is listed in the second column, and informa-tion on the engine size (in liters) and the number of cylinders islisted in the third. This information is usually needed to correctlyidentify a specific configuration within a model type.

Column 4 shows EPA MPG estimates for city and highway driving.The vehicle with the best fuel economy in each vehicle class isindicated by an arrow to the left of the model name; the listing isdisplayed in bold lettering and is highlighted by a gray bar.Alternative fuel vehicles are highlighted by a blue bar, and thosethat can use two kinds of fuel, such as bi-fuel and flexible fuelvehicles, have an entry for each fuel type. Annual estimated fuelcost is listed in column 5 (see the inside front cover for anexplanation of how this is estimated). The final column (“Notes”)contains additional information on engine and fuel system type,applicable taxes, and other useful information.

Vehicles with a “P” in the “Notes” column require premium-gradegasoline. Because premium is the most expensive grade ofgasoline, these vehicles may have a higher annual fuel cost eventhough they have a slightly better fuel economy than othervehicles. A legend for all of the abbreviations is provided at thebottom of each odd-numbered page.

TAX CREDITS AND DEDUCTIONS

If you purchase a qualifying electric or “clean-fuel” vehicle in 2003-4, you may be eligible for federal income tax incentives, such astax credits and deductions. Clean fuel vehicles include gasoline-electric hybrids, compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, liquefiedpropane gas (LPG) vehicles, and others powered by alternativefuels. TAX INCENTIVES AND DISINCENTIVES

GAS GUZZLER TAX

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 requires auto companies to pay a gasguzzler tax on the sale of passenger cars with exceptionally lowfuel economy. Such vehicles are identified in this guide by theword “Tax.” In the dealer showroom, the words “Gas Guzzler” andthe amount of the tax are listed on the vehicle’s fuel economylabel. The tax does not apply to light trucks.

VEHICLE CLASSES USED IN THIS GUIDE

WHY SOME VEHICLES ARE NOT LISTED

Vans, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles (SUVs)weighing more than 8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight(vehicle weight plus carrying capacity) are classified asheavy-duty vehicles. Fuel economy regulations do notapply to these vehicles, so they are not tested and fueleconomy labels are not posted on their windows.

Some manufacturers may not submit a vehicle’s fuel economyinformation to EPA in time to be included in the guide. How-ever, you can usually find this information atwww.fueleconomy.gov, which is updated regularly.

The availability of some vehicles is restricted.

WHY CONSIDER FUEL ECONOMY?SAVE MONEY

You could save $300-$500 in fuel costseach year by choosing the most fuel-efficient vehicle in a particular class. Thiscan add up to thousands of dollars over avehicle’s lifetime. Fuel-efficient models comein all shapes and sizes, so you need notsacrifice utility or size.

Each vehicle listing in the Fuel Economy Guide provides fuel costinformation (described on the inside front cover). The fueleconomy web site, www.fueleconomy.gov, features an annual fuelcost calculator, which allows you to insert your local gasolineprices and consider your driving preference to achieve the mostaccurate fuel cost information for your vehicle.

STRENGTHEN NATIONAL ENERGY SECURITY

Buying a more fuel-efficient vehicle can help strengthen ournational energy security by reducing our dependence onforeign oil. Half of the oil used to produce the gasoline you put inyour tank is imported. The United States uses about 20 millionbarrels of oil per day, two-thirds of which is used for transportation.Petroleum imports cost us about $2 billion a week—that’s moneythat could be used to fuel our own economy.

PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT

Burning fossil fuels such as gasoline or diesel adds greenhousegases, including carbon dioxide, to the earth’s atmosphere.Greenhouse gases trap heat and thuswarm the earth because they prevent asignificant proportion of infrared radiationfrom escaping into space.

Vehicles with lower fuel economy burnmore fuel, creating more carbon dioxide.Every gallon of gasoline your vehicle burnsputs 20 pounds of carbon dioxide into theatmosphere. You can reduce your contribu-tion to global warming by choosing a vehicle with higher fueleconomy.

By choosing a vehicle that achieves 25 miles per gallonrather than 20 miles per gallon, you can prevent the releaseof about 15 tons of greenhouse gas pollution over the lifetimeof your vehicle.

TIPS FOR IMPROVING FUEL ECONOMY

DRIVE MORE EFFICIENTLY

Aggressive driving (speeding and rapid acceleration andbraking) can lower your gas mileage by as much as 33%at highway speeds and 5% around town (costing you asmuch as 49¢/gallon!).

Observe the speed limit—each 5 miles per hour (mph) youdrive over 60 mph is like paying an additional 10¢/gallon.

Avoid idling—idling gets 0 miles per gallon.

KEEP YOUR CAR IN SHAPE

Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune can improve gasmileage by about 4%—repairing a faulty oxygen sensorcan improve fuel economy by as much as 40%!

Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage byas much as 10% (and protect your engine).

Keeping your tires inflated to the recommended pressureand using the recommended grade of motor oil can saveas much as 3–5¢/gallon. The manufacturer’s recom-mended tire pressure can be found on the tire informationplacard and/or vehicle certification label located on thevehicle door edge, doorpost, or glove-box door, or insidethe trunk lid.

PLAN AND COMBINE TRIPS

A warmed-up engine is more fuel efficient than a cold one.Many short trips taken from a cold start can use twice asmuch fuel as one multipurpose trip covering the samedistance when the engine is warmed up and efficient. Tripplanning not only saves fuel, but also reduces wear andtear on your car.

It’s no accident he most fuel-efficient vehicles in some classes forthe 2004 model year are hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs). Hybridscan be configured in many different ways to achieve a variety ofdifferent objectives. They combine the best features of theinternal combustion engine with an electric motor and cansignificantly improve fuel economy without sacrificing performanceor driving range. HEVs may also be configured to provideelectrical power to auxiliary loads such as power tools.

HEVs are primarily propelled by an internal combustion engine,just like conventional vehicles. However, they also convert energynormally wasted during coasting and braking into electricity, whichis stored in a battery until needed by the electric motor. Theelectric motor is used to assist the engine when accelerating or hillclimbing and in low-speed driving conditions where internal

combustion engines are least efficient. Unlike all-electric vehicles,HEVs now being offered do not need to be plugged into anexternal source of electricity to be recharged; conventionalgasoline and regenerative braking provide all the energy thevehicle needs.

Potential buyers should also be aware that the federal govern-ment is currently offering tax incentives for HEVs and otheralternative fuel vehicles. Some states also offer incentives.

CNG fuel is normally dispensed in “equivalent gallons,” where one equivalent gallon is equal to 121.5 cubic feet of CNG. Therefore, thefuel economy values are shown in miles per gallon-equivalent. Annual fuel cost estimates are based on an average fuel price of $0.90per gallon of CNG and $1.40 per gallon of gasoline.

The driving range is shown in miles and represents the distance the vehicle can travel on a full tank (or tanks) of fuel during combinedcity and highway driving (55% city and 45% highway).

ADVANCED TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY

Although fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) are not expected to reach themass market for at least a decade, a limited number will beavailable for sale or lease in 2004-5 to demonstration fleets inparts of the country with a readily accessible hydrogen supply.

FCVs represent a radical departure from conventional vehicleswith internal combustion engines. They use emerging technologywith the potential to reduce harmful emissions substantially, aswell as energy use and our dependence on foreign oil.

FCVs are propelled by electric motors powered by fuel cells,which produce electricity from the chemical energy of hydrogen.They are more efficient than conventional vehicles, and the onlyby-product of a hydrogen fuel cell is water. FCVs may alsoincorporate other advanced automotive technologies to increaseefficiency.

THE CHALLENGES AHEAD

Much work remains before FCVs can be mass-marketed andsold at local dealerships. Significant research and developmentis required to reduce costs and improve performance in areassuch as driving range, cold-weather operation, and durability. Anew refueling infrastructure may also be required to makehydrogen fuel widely available to consumers.

Automakers, fuel cell and component developers, governmentagencies, and others are working hard to accelerate the introduc-tion of FCVs.
