Format/platform Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire -- Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre For the Nintendo 3DS and 2DS. What is the Genre of the promoted game? RPG and adventure What is the Genre of the advert? Is it different? The advert falls more into the “action/adventure” category. It starts with an element of suspense and mystery, following a single young hero as he explores a bright tropical island environment. Elements of RPG is understandably hard to incorporate into live action sequences, and so it focuses on the adventure aspect of the game instead. Target Audience (Who? Demographics, types. Is the advert aimed at the gamer? Or parent etc?) The target audience is a mixture of children, as well as long-time older fans of the franchise. The fact that the hero is depicted as an older teen allows for more open relatability for a wider audience. Describe the Narrative structure The story follows a young explorer setting out on a tropical looking island, he finds a cave and enters, upon entering it he finds two old murals depicting the two legendary mascot pokemon. The scene then changes to the mural itself, the picture “coming to life” and showing the two pokemon in dramatic environments. The scene goes back to the island and the explorer is seen flying upon the back of another pokemon. The rest of the trailer depicts gameplay and the release date.

This worm’s eye view shot builds the introduction to the hero as well as display in more detail the wilderness of the terrain.

This focus pull brings our attention to the hero, conveying without words that he has been trekking for a while as he is worn out and sweaty. This also helps us understand and connect to the environment.

Mise-en-scene?The display of colour is very prominent in the trailer, from the lush wildlife surroundings to the bright clothing the hero is kitted out with, the vibrant colours emphasise the “cartoon” aspect of the game, ensuring it maintains its child-friendly appeal.

Use of music and sound The use of sound in the narrative is prominent at the start of the trailer. In the wide shot of the island there is an emphasis on the wind, making it seem more desolate. The next shot changes the ambience to a rainforest setting, using things like a bird call to immerse the viewer.

The most blatant use of SFX is this scene here, it uses a real figure within an animated environment. The use of the animation makes the story “brighter” and more light hearted, showing how the game is a fun immersive adventure.

Being targeted at long-time fans, it needn`t explain in detail the concept of the game, assuming most viewers have an understanding of the game content already it merely focuses on upping the hype and excitement for the remastering of the game.

War. Action. Shooter?

What is the Genre of the advert? Is it different?Yes, the advert itself mimics 1940s television, making it out to be romanticised and an endearing adventure. The context in which it is presented to modern day viewers, however, allows it to be comical.

Target Audience (Who? Demographics, types. Is the advert aimed at the gamer? Or parent etc?)The target audience is definitely the gaming community, or anyone who enjoys comic book style action and adventure as it uses the appeal of the large mecha for fans of that genre.

Describe the Narrative structureThe story is set up with a friendly store owner giving “Peggy” her rations to take for her mother, this introduces us to our heroine. We then follow Peggy on her journey home all until she is interrupted by the sound of distressed shouting. She spots an overturned car and looks around for someone to help, upon finding no-one she blows a whistle. This builds suspense and heightens the impact of the introduction to “Liesel”, the huge, mechanical canine that comes running over the hill.

This shot mimics the stereotyped “end credits” shot featuring a peaceful shot of the cast from behind depicted with a wide shot.

Mise-en-scene?The costume design is made to match that of the era, as well as the vehicle and video quality. This makes the contrast of the mecha have more of an impression as it contrasts with its surroundings. The environment is set in the countryside with idealistic sunny weather to brighten it all.

Use of music and sound The music and sound is crucial in the delivery of this particular advert as it lends to a very specific niche. As the advert is mimicking 1940s quality television the audio quality is deliberately grainy and the music in the style of the era.

The main attraction of course would be the large mechanical canine by the name of Liesel. While this is animated, the interactions it has with its environment are not. These would have been created manually to then match up with the animation and overlay.

Or parent etc?)This trailer is aimed very directly at young gamers, presumably 8-14 year old males at school as it encourages them that their peers would not only be jealous, but that they would overcome any troubles they were experiencing with them.

Describe the Narrative structureThe narrative takes place in a school setting, depicting a strict elder woman promoting “Humans Against Genesis” thus producing the joke that anyone against them is a “HAG”. The woman then proceeds to name the console’s highest selling features, then go on to criticise Sonic, who in turn blow a raspberry and runs off in glee. The woman is blatantly presented as a dislikeable character, and the target audience will feel inclined to side with Sonic.

The camera setting doesn’t move and stays stable while the setup resembles that of a news broadcast, adding to the “formal” aspect of the character depicted.

When the trailer switches to gameplay it makes the movement of the game stand out more, and make it appear more exciting.

Mise-en-scene?The costume and set lacks colour and has very little imaginative decoration, save for the game itself, making it more desirable and appealing.

Use of music and sound The use of sound in this trailer mimics that of any over-the-top slapstick cartoon. This helps drive home the comedic theme of the trailer, as well as communicate the style of the game as well. The soundtrack used is directly from the game itself, playing alongside the gameplay footage.

The advert duration fits into the 29 second slot for TV broadcasting. 17 seconds of it were live action, and 12 seconds were dedicated entirely to gameplay.
