Write poems about: Objects, memories, feelings Writers, we have finished our opinion writing and are seeing if maybe some people will respond to our letters. Our new unit it…….poetry!!!!!! But remember, in order to write poetry, we need to make sure we are reading poetry! Make sure you are choosing poetry books to read so that they can help you with your writing. Mini Lessons: How Can We Find Poems to Read? Before we start writing poems, we need to read a lot! While I hope you will read some poetry in the morning when you come in, today we are going to really study poetry. Give a book to each child. Look at it closely with a partner- be a poem detective- what are you noticing? Some books are all by same author. Some are not- called anthology- collection of poems. Find a poem in 2 books- show how drawings are different. When you read poetry, you don’t need to flip through every page. Flip through and look at the pictures, or titles, or table of contents, see what you’re interested in. This unit- find a poem you LOVE and I will copy it for your to memorize. Just like we have memorized our poems at fluency station, I want you to choose one you love. YOU WILL HAVE IT FOREVER (ELOISE GREENFIELD) Have them go off. Reflect- what are you noticing about poems?

Today we are going to try to be poets! Poetry is allll around us as long as there’s a feeling and it comes from your heart. We could write a poem about a feeling, a memory, or an object. (make chart) .Poets look at their world, and see something different. They don’t just look at things, but look into them! Right now we will practice with an object.Hold a pencil sharpener and let them describe it in detail. You’re being a scientist.

Writing about memories *These are great for Mother’s Day Poems

Connection: Writers, you have worked so hard with your object poems and looking through objects, not at them. Today we will begin a new type of poetry. Teaching: Today we will learn how to write a poem about a memory. I want you to think of a memory that you hold inside. It may be

Something that has happened to you Something that you care about Someone that you care about

For example, I have a memory about when my little niece was born and I held her for the first time. (Show picture).

Page 7: rachelamandah.files.wordpress.com  · Web view2014. 4. 18. · Today we are going to try to be poets! Poetry is allll around us as long as there’s a feeling and it comes from your

Active Engagement: Let’s try one together. I know we all care about the American Flag. Let’s write about that. “Tell what you see, tell what it’s doing, “you”, “When I”, “I_ tell what you feel, think, wonder, hear, see, do…” I want everyone to close their eyes and think of a memory. Thumbs up when you have your memory.

Tell what you see:Tell what it’s doing:“you ____”“When I _____”“I _____(tell what you feel, think, wonder, hear, see, do…)”

*Place sheets at writing station with hints to include in each line (see above)

Example:

Link: Today and every day when you write a memory poem I want you to think about what you see, what it’s doing, and how you feel, think, wonder, hear, see, and do.

Continue working on memory poems

Page 8: rachelamandah.files.wordpress.com  · Web view2014. 4. 18. · Today we are going to try to be poets! Poetry is allll around us as long as there’s a feeling and it comes from your

Connection: We have been working on our memory poems. Memories are so special because they can never be taken away from us. Teaching: Today I will give you more time to work on your memory poem. Remember, it is a poem about a memory. Remodel writing a memory poem following outline.Active Engagement: Turn and talk- what memory will you be writing about today. Follow outline- what will you write?Link: Today and every day writers, when you write a memory poem, think about including all the parts from this outline to help you express your memory.

Sharing memory poems with our partner

Connection: Yesterday we began writing our memory poems. Today we will continue and practice sharing with our partner.Teaching: Review how to sit. Review how to give a compliment and ask a question.Active Engagement: ModelLink: You will go have time to work on your memory poem. Today and every day, remember to always share your poetry and writing with your classmates. Enjoy their compliments and think about revising your work with their questions.

Editing memory poems

Connection: This week you have done wonderful job writing memory poems. Today we will go over how to edit our poems. Teaching: Review someone’s poem: for spelling, line spacing- I modelActive Engagement: Review poem togetherLink: Today and every day as you write poetry, remember to edit for spelling, white space, line breaks, and make sure the words are saying what you want them to say.

This week- can write an object poem, or a memory poem, or a poem about anything- use ingredients and what we will be discussing this week.

Additional topics Line breaksConnection: You have been writing such beautiful poetry. You just wrote poetry to your moms. I’ve noticed that some of you have trouble with white space and understanding what they means. Today we will do a fun lesson to help you with that!Teach: An important part of the poem is silence. It is both the words and the silence between the words. Where the line is broken helps make the music and rhythm of the poem. You can break a poem

- according to your natural breath- -to emphasize a particular word

Page 9: rachelamandah.files.wordpress.com  · Web view2014. 4. 18. · Today we are going to try to be poets! Poetry is allll around us as long as there’s a feeling and it comes from your

She loved the sound of the wind in the trees. (divide into 3 ways)

Active Engagement: I am going to give you a new poem. I wrote it like a story, going all the way to the end. Your job is to cut and paste the lines how you would write the poem. Then we will see how the author chose to break the poem.Link: Notice how you have the freedom with line breaks in your poems and how different it can sound. Today and every day, make sure you think about where you want the silence and the line breaks. It will help with the rhythm of your poems!

Repetition- emphasize important words

Connection:Teach: Read things by Eloise Greenfield. What is she trying to tell you? (That you can’t hold onto things but a poem will be with you forever.) Read again without repeating. What does it do? Makes the point stronger! **Look for poems with repetition. Active Engagement: Shoe Hungry poem? Let’s write a class poem about something we feel strongly about- recess! Use repetition. Link: Today and every day think about using repetition for important parts.

Poets get ideas from each otherConnection:Teach: It’s okay to take a line from another poem as long as you give them credit- Inspired by _______. Use Love that Boy by Walter Dean Myers. Then read my innovation.Love That ClassLove that classLike a bunny likes to hopI said I love that classLike a bunny likes to hopThey work so hard each dayTheir learning can never stop.Active Engagement: What do you love? Like a ____ likes to _______- only one set of words rhyme! Link: Use other poems to inspire your writing!

Other poetry lesson ideas (I haven’t created lessons for yet): Writing about a feeling- the blues? Talking objects- personification? Go along with object poems! Shapes Personification- writing to an object Question Poems- what do we wonder about
