Call for applications “Collaborateur/trice de recherche” in Social Studies of medicine University of Lausanne, Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), Institute for the Humanities in Medicine (IHM) Project: “Exploring the genomicisation of medicine: the case of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD)” Presentation This one-year position is available within the framework of the project Exploring the genomicisation of medicine: the case of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD)” funded by the University of Lausanne, Faculty of Biology and Medicine. The project engages with the testing and validation of a genomic approach to Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) from an integrative perspective deeply grounded in the social sciences (i.e. Science and Technology Studies –STS). The research consists of a close scrutiny of scientists’ practices and their construction of genetic variants as defining features of concrete personalised and precision medicine approaches to health conditions. Your research has the objective to describe how “personalisation” in the case of SCD emerges from: (i) the practical, expert work situated in different settings (e.g. laboratories, medical units); (ii) the negotiation of institutional standards (e.g. hospital policies, research ethics); and (iii) the recruitment of different professional perspectives (e.g. researchers, clinicians, bioinformaticians). The activities of this project will be fully integrated with those of the Sinergia grant “Development of Personalized Health in Switzerland: Social Sciences Perspectives” (DoPHiS; FNS N°CRSII5_180350) (Coordinator: prof. Francesco Panese, UNIL and CHUV). The research plan of DoPHiS will allow you to work in an interdisciplinary and international group of (senior and young) researchers, as well as to be exposed to several complementary methodological approaches – spanning from quantitative (e.g. surveys, mathematical and statistical methods) to qualitative (e.g. interviews, focus groups, ethnographic observations) social science methods. Job description -Starting date of employment: October 1, 2019 (negotiable) -Contract duration: 12-months -Engagement rate: 40-50% (negotiable) -Workplace: University of Lausanne, Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), Institute for the Humanities in Medicine (IHM)

PresentationThis one-year position is available within the framework of the project “Exploring the genomicisation of medicine: the case of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD)” funded by the University of Lausanne, Faculty of Biology and Medicine.

Job description -Starting date of employment: October 1, 2019 (negotiable)-Contract duration: 12-months -Engagement rate: 40-50% (negotiable)-Workplace: University of Lausanne, Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), Institute for the Humanities in Medicine (IHM)-Gross salary: detailed conditions for “Collaborateur/trice de recherche” depend on the candidate’s profile and professional experience.

ActivitiesThe major research focus of the project will be on the reconfigurations of disease, illness, treatment and healthcare engendered by the production of a genetic aetiology of SCD. These technoscientific practices will be investigated through qualitative methods including: literature analysis, semi-structured interviews, ethnographic observations and document analysis.

You will be mainly based at the Institute for the Humanities in Medicine (IHM) at UNIL/CHUV, and will work in close collaboration with Luca Chiapperino (Senior FNS Researcher) and Francesco Panese (Professor of Social Studies of Science and Medicine). Their affiliation to the “Science and Technology Studies Laboratory” of UNIL-SSP-ISS will also enable you to become part of the lively STS community in the Lausanne region, and to benefit from intellectual exchanges with peers and senior researchers working on project’s themes beyond the IHM. Frequent seminars and lectures by visiting scholars provide opportunities for contacts beyond the University.

Your profile You have completed your first year of Master’s degree studies, or you are about to defend your Master’s

thesis (e.g. September 2019) in STS, or sociology of health and/or medicine, or related disciplines and domains (e.g. biology, medicine).

Considering the expected fieldwork in the domain of genomics and related areas in biomedicine, you hold a strong interest for, or a familiarity with biomedical sources.

You demonstrate a developed skill set, a familiarity with the methods and a strong interest in social studies of science and medicine.

You are fluent in French and have at least an elementary ability in reading, listening, speaking and writing English.

Your advantagesThrough this position, you will interact closely with other researchers within the framework of an interdisciplinary, dynamic and international research setting. You will also have several opportunities to valorise your research in international peer-reviewed publications and oral presentations. This project may also provide you with substantial scientific support to the development of your academic career, since it could eventually constitute an important scientific experience on which to build upon for the pursuit of doctoral studies through the available funding schemes (e.g. FNS Doc.ch).
