Read or look at pictures in a book. Point out pictures and review what letter pictures start with. High five or clap when you find a picture that begins with the letter of the week, U.

Writing: Encourage your child to draw a picture of their living room. Ask them to identify the things they drew in the picture (couch, tv, chair, table, etc.). Encourage your child to dictate to you the objects in their picture and write down what they say. Review what you wrote down and what your student said, allowing them to explore their ideas and how you wrote them down.

Art: Today we learned that birds live in nests! Using sticks you can find and collect outside, encourage your child to create a bird’s nest by gluing the sticks together or onto a piece of paper. If you can’t find sticks, cut out pieces of paper and encourage your child to create a nest with the strips of paper. How does a bird make a nest? What do they use the nest for? Who lives in the nest?

Blocks: Show your child different pictures of homes (houses, apartment building, barn, etc.). Talk to your child about the type of home it is and encourage them to replicate the building using blocks or any materials/toys you have at home.

Daily Focus: Teacher will introduce the unit of “where we live”, explaining that we will be learning about where people and animals live. The class will review and practice the “house song”, using a visual. The teacher will go back to the house song, and ask the students where the bee in the song lives. The teacher and the class will discuss how bees live in hives. The teacher will show the students a visual of a hive, and will discuss how bees make their hives. The teacher will review the concept of different animals living in different types of homes, and how the class will continue learning about different types of animals and their homes.

winter, and fish live in the water/ocean. There are some animals (dogs, cats, birds) that are kept as pets and live in peoples’ homes.

Writing: Scroll down to find a picture of a sample floor plan. Show your child the picture and explain that floor plans show how a home looks from above and helps people understand where all of the rooms are in a home. Point out the text in the picture and explain that the text is labeling the room. After your child has had a chance to investigate the floorplan, encourage them to create their own. You can also encourage them to use the pictures they drew of the rooms in their home to help guide them. Invite your child to add letters and/or words to their floor plans so other people can read their plans.

Art: Today we learned about bees and how they live in beehives. Scroll down to find a print-out of a beehive outline. If you do not have a printer, look at the picture and sketch out the outline on a piece of paper, then cut it out for your student (or help your student practice cutting it out). Then, using bubble wrap you can find from packages, help your child use yellow paint to paint the bubble wrap. Then paste the bubble wrap onto the beehive and you’ll see a beautiful print on your beehive! If you do not have paint or bubble wrap, encourage your child to draw yellow dots all over the beehive. You can also glue a black circle to the bottom of the beehive for an entrance for the bees!

bunny lives in a burrow (a hole in the ground) during the winter to stay warm. The class will discuss how the burrow is the bunny’s home, and how the bunny makes the burrow by digging into the ground. The teacher will review the concept of different animals living in different types of homes, and how the class will continue learning about different types of animals and their homes.

Group Goal For The Week: Animals live in many different types of homes. Some animals make their homes. Birds make nests, bees make hives, bunnies live in burrows in the winter, and fish live in the water/ocean. There are some animals (dogs, cats, birds) that are kept as pets and live in peoples’ homes.

Writing: On four pieces of paper, write down the letters D, L, U, and Z in large clear writing (one letter per page). Encourage your child to use any materials you have at home (q-tips, crayons, paperclips, playdoh, etc.) to trace the letters using the materials.

Art: Today we learned how bunnies live underground during the winter, in a hole in the ground called a burrow. Create a burrow by cutting out a U-shape from a piece of paper. Help your child glue that shape onto another piece of paper. This is the underground hole. Then, encourage your child to draw grass on top of the u-shape – that is the ground. Then, encourage your child to draw or paste pictures or stickers of bunnies in the hole underground. See the picture for an example.

Daily Focus: Teacher will introduce the unit of “where we live”, explaining that we will be learning about where people and animals live. The class will review and practice the “house song”, using a visual. The teacher will review the idea that the class has been discussing where animals live and their homes. The teacher will present the class with visuals of fish and sharks, and ask the students what these animals are, and where they live. The class will discuss the concept of fish and other animals like sharks, dolphins, and octopus, and how they live in the ocean/water. The class will come up with a list of reasons of why these animals need to live in the water. (To breathe, to swim, sleep, hunt for food, etc.) The teacher will review the concept of different animals living in different types of homes, and how the class will continue learning about different types of animals and their homes.

Literacy: Letter of the week: U

Look through magazines or newspapers to find pictures that begin with the letter U. Encourage the student to cut out the pictures and glue them onto another piece of paper to create a letter U collage.

Writing: Explain to children that most homes have addresses to help people identify them. Show picture examples of addresses on homes. Invite children to create an address for their cubby, room, or personal space in their home (using both letters and numbers, as they are ready). Provide appropriately sized pieces of paper as well as writing utensils and assist children with writing, as necessary. Attach the address cards on or near the children’s room, bed, or personal space.

Today we learned that fish, sharks, and many other animals live in the ocean. We are going to create an ocean with lots of fish! Using blue paint, encourage your child to paint a piece of paper blue. They can use a paint brush, q-tips, their fingers, or anything they choose to color in the paper. Then, scroll down to find a print-out of some fish shapes. If you do not have a printer, simply draw some fish shapes and encourage your child to cut them out and glue them onto the blue painted paper. Ask your child: where do fish live? Why do they live in the water? What do they do in the water?

Blocks: Some buildings are very tall. How high can they build a home without allowing it to fall down? Use blocks, toys, or any materials you have available to you.

Today, we learned about pet animals who live in people’s homes. There are many different types of pets, and dogs are very common as pets. We are going to create a dog out of shapes! You can outline these shapes and encourage your child to cut them out, or you can cut them out for your child. You will need 2 colored papers, and will cut out: one large rectangle for the body, one octagon for the head, two triangles for the ears, one small triangle for the nose, one small oval for the tail, four small rectangles for the legs, four small squares for the feet, one long rectangle for the collar, and once circle for the tag on the collar. Then, encourage your child to put the pieces together to create a dog! You can glue the pieces onto another piece of paper. Use the picture below to guide you on how to get the shapes you need and how to put them together.
