Campbell’s Digital Photography and Intro to Digital Film 25S April 14-17

Hi all,

I am not going to add too much new work to your workload this week. I am giving you this week to ensure that you are taking pictures for the assigned photo task and answering the few written questions ( and fill in the missing info) I asked you about in the past couple of the packages.

So for organizing your to do task list for Digital Photography & Film for this present week:

1. Please go back and review what photos and questions you were asked to complete and begin (if you have not already )to choose and plan and then capture 8 to 12 of the photo categories or theme presented in the photo prompt list . If you capture the images with your phone camera it is very easy to hand them in Microsoft office teams –in the chat mode just @ [email protected] in the Digital Photography team. I have sent you out an invite to join. It is likely in your school email account. Your accounts are what you log on with in the computer lab and hopefully you remember your password . If you forget your password you can phone the school and ask Miss Sammons or Mrs. Sippola to tell /give you your password.

Examples of your email addresses for emailing me or for down loading the free app of Office 365 teams

On your phones or computer would be would be:[email protected]@[email protected]

Our team in O365 is Digital Photography 25S you can text or upload jpgs (photos) in chat from your camera or take pictures of assignments and paste or upload them into team chat as well . Under ‘General’ in the class team you can click on ‘files’ and coloured copies of all the work assignments to date are in there. There are teams in Office 365 for all your courses so you can communicate with your teachers (aka me and others) in team chat.

2. Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this week. For example have you scouted out inside or just outside your door in your yard a puddle or other source of reflection (use the mirror I provided or a different reflective surface you have), have you spied a story (so you can create a narrative) , also do you see something you can capture close up or from down low from nature that has symmetry, and hold on for a couple of days from now and you can do some chalk art please-you may have to get up on a ladder or the top of a car/truck to capture the piece from a unique and high(not quite bird’s eye view but at least) from above angle that may allow one to see more of the

Page 3: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

chalk subject/image in its entirety . (Let me know if you need more

of a certain colour) Will it have a meaningful message , or personal trademark or fun, playful element to it. Lastly remember to challenge yourself to closely looked around to discover and ultimately capture from one or two angles a letter or number in the environment or in architecture and can you find a natural frame and put a subject in it (borrow a family member or pet or an important personal object in the frame if you like and are able). And what about the photo essay have you picked a theme or story you are going to document and highlight in a series of sequential or random yet tied together by theme collection? And what about that butterfly or two I gave you . Consider again or if you haven’t already how using it as the subject or contrast within a photo could be effective (and it will cross one of your photo tasks or categories off your list) . For example, can your butterfly be placed as colour or beauty or nature juxtaposed ( aka purposefully placed next to in order to emphasize difference or send a message) against manmade thing , lack of colour or ugliness/despair. The contrast can be effective.Or try pattern- break in pattern spoon spoon spoon butterfly spoon or

rock rock butterfly rock. Or maybe place the butterfly in a family member’s hair or do a

POV shot of a butterfly resting on your hand, or a funny selfie shot or ECU of a butterfly on your resting on the bridge of your nose or on your jeans. Or capture the reflection of part of the butterfly in that circular mirror. Or tape the butterfly to a mirror at home and take an autobiographical picture of you taking a picture of the mirror with the butterfly placed honouring in the rule of thirds. The skies the limit you creative , hardworking digital photo students. ( And that means you can still try some more ideas if you have already handed in one butterfly image). The more the merrier( aka the happier and satisfied you may feel).

Looks like a fairly shallow to medium depth of Field( DOF ) eh students?

Students the big goal for this week is to make a plan with me as to how you are going to hand photos in to me and to hand in photos to me (and any written answers required). Please contact me in some way if you have yet to figure out how you can send me your assignment jpgs . I am happy to help. You can reach out to me anytime. I have your back. An important job as your teacher is to help and support you in anyway so that you

can find some joy and also to encourage you and provide you with experiences and tasks that help to make you feel like you are building your camera skills and knowledge related to digital photography and film.

3. Moving forward later in the week (this week) please read the opening pages of the screen play script for How to Train your Dragon. Next week you will create a 2-3 page two scene script ( not to film but simply to learn about typed script format in the film Biz).Check out the format guide on the next page with some of the terms and short forms used in film scriptwriting.

What seems to be centered on the page and what seems to be presented and typed starting at the left margin.

List two things that are capitalized

What goes inside the parenthesis ( )?

What does O.S. stand for or remind the actor or the audio or stage manager what is needed?

4. . Students also check out the very similar format used used for a section of Toy Story’s script below:

i) Digital students: What do you sense SFX stands for?

ii)Who is your favorite character in Toy Story and/or in How to Train Your Dragon and why do you appreciate or relate to them?

Dragon" DeBlois/Sanders Final Draft (Rev.19) 02-13-2010 3.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON

Written by

Dean DeBlois & Chris Sanders

Final Draft February 13, 2010

FADE IN:

EXT. NORTH SEA/VILLAGE - NIGHT

We skim above a dark, wild ocean. The camera turns toward a lone island, Berk. It is a gigantic shard of rock jutting straight out of the water.

HICCUP (V.O.)This, is Berk. It's twelve daysNorth of hopeless, and a few

degrees South of freezing to death. It's located solidly on the

meridian of misery. The camera drifts over rolling hills to reveal a small

village nestled on an outcropping of sea mounts.

HICCUP (V.O.) (CONT'D)My village. In a word, sturdy. And it's been here for seven

Page 10: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

generations, but every singlebuilding is new.

The camera drifts closer, circling.

HICCUP (V.O.) (CONT'D)We have fishing, hunting, and a

charming view of the sunsets. Theonly problems are the pests. You

see, most places have mice ormosquitos. We have...

Sheep graze peacefully on a hillside. Suddenly one issnatched.

CUT TO:

INT. STOICK'S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS

A door is pulled open... as a DRAGON swoops directly toward it, BLASTING FIRE. The door is SLAMMED. The fire shoots through the slats of wood, illuminating HICCUP, a gangly teenage Viking.

HICCUP...dragons.

EXT. STOICK'S HOUSE

He reopens the sizzling door, as leaps off of the front porch. He weaves through the erupting mayhem as Vikings pour out of the buildings, ready for a fight.

Page 11: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

More dragons swarm in, setting rooftops alight and hauling off sheep.

HICCUP (V.O.)Most people would leave. Not us.

We're Vikings. We have stubbornnessissues.

Vikings sound the alarm. Viking men and women pour out into the streets, axes in hand. ON HICCUP darting through alleys, staying under eaves, making his way through the battle.

HICCUP (V.O.) (CONT'D)My name's Hiccup. Great name, I

know. But it's not the worst.Parents believe a hideous name will

frighten off gnomes and trolls.Like our charming Viking demeanor

wouldn't do that. Dragons sweep back and forth, dodging axes and blasting the Vikings who throw them. A burly warrior gets tossed in an explosion, knocking Hiccup to the ground.

VIKING

(FIERCE)Arggghhhhh!

(cheery, insane)Mornin'!

Hiccup gets to his feet and continues to rush past gigantic men and women.

HICCUP (V.O.)

Page 12: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

Meet the neighbors. Hoark theHaggard...

HOARKWhat are you doing out!?

HICCUP... Burnthair the Broad...

BURNTHAIRGet inside!

HICCUP... Phlegma the Fierce...

PHLEGMA THE FIERCEGet back inside!

"

HICCUP. Ack.

He passes a silent ox of a viking, picking his ear.

HICCUP (CONT'D)Yep, just Ack.

Enter STOICK, the biggest Viking of all. He yanks Hiccup fromthe path of a strafing dragon and holds aloft to the crowd.

STOICKHiccup!?

(accusingly; to the crowd)What is he doing out again?!

Page 13: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

(TO HICCUP)What are you doing out?! Get

inside! The flames light up his scowling face and matted red beard. He sets Hiccup down and turns to the sky, searching.

HICCUP (V.O.)

(IN AWE)That's Stoick the Vast. Chief ofthe tribe. They say that when hewas a baby he popped a dragon'shead clean off of its shoulders.

Do I believe it? Stoick grabs a wooden cart and hurls it, knocking the strafing dragon out of the sky.

HICCUP (V.O.) (CONT'D)Yes I do.

An EXPLOSION forces Vikings to DUCK. Stoick stands firm, brushing flaming debris off of his shoulder.

STOICK(barking; to his men)What have we got?

VIKING #1Gronkles. Nadders. Zipplebacks. Oh,

and Hoark saw a MonstrousNightmare.

STOICKAny Night Furies?

VIKING #1

Page 14: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

None so far.

STOICK

(RELIEVED)Good.

VIKINGHoist the torches!

Massive flaming braziers are raised on poles, lighting up the night sky... and revealing swirling dragons of all types. Below, Hiccup crosses an open plaza and ducks into an open building with a tall chimney.

INT. BLACKSMITH STALL - CONTINUOUS

He crosses behind a counter, where a peg-legged, one-armed hulk of a Blacksmith reshapes blades with a hammer and tongs appendage.

GOBBERAh! Nice of you to join the party.I thought you'd been carried off.

Hiccup dons a leather apron and starts to put away Gobber's scattered appendages.

HICCUPWho me? Nah, come on! I'm way too

muscular for their taste. Theywouldn't know what to do with all

this. Hiccup strikes a bodybuilder pose.

GOBBER

Page 15: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

They need toothpicks, don't they?Hiccup gets to work, transferring bent and chipped weapons to

the forge as Vikings crowd the counter for replacements.

HICCUP (V.O.)The meathead with attitude and

interchangeable hands is Gobber.I've been his apprentice ever since

I was little. Well...littler.

EXT. VILLAGE - CONTINUOUS

ON STOICK

STOICKWe move to the lower defenses.

We'll counter-attack with thecatapults.

Armed men rush past, flanking others who carry sheep to safety. Stoick follows up the rear as, overhead, a dragon strafes the rooftops with Napalm-like fire.

HICCUP (V.O.)See? Old village. Lots and lots

of new houses.

VIKING

FIRE! In response, the fire brigade charges through the plaza -- four TEENS, tugging a large wooden cask on wheels. From it, they fill buckets of water to douse the flames. One among

them is a cute, energetic Viking girl.

Page 16: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

Hiccup leans out of the stall to watch her.

HICCUP (V.O.)Oh and that's Fishlegs, Snotlout. The twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut.

And...

(DREAMY)Astrid.

A SLOW-MOTION explosion erupts behind her, framing her in a Captivating ball of fire. The others join her, looking awesome and heroic.

HICCUP (V.O.) (CONT'D)Their job is so much cooler.

Hiccup tries to join them as they pass, but he's hooked byGobber and hoisted back inside.

HICCUP (CONT'D)

(PLEADING)Ah, come on. Let me out, please. I

need to make my mark.

GOBBEROh, you've made plenty of marks.

All in the wrong places.

HICCUPPlease, two minutes. I'll kill a

dragon. My life will get infinitelybetter. I might even get a date.

GOBBERYou can't lift a hammer. You can't

Page 17: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

swing an axe... Gobber grabs a bola (iron balls connected by rope).

GOBBER (CONT'D)... you can't even throw one of

these. A Viking runs by and nabs it out of Gobber's hand, hurling it at a dive-bombing Gronkle. The bola binds its legs, sending it into a heavy crash.

HICCUP(ready with the answer)

Okay fine, but... He rushes to the back corner of the stall and presents a bizarre, wheel barrow-like contraption.

HICCUP (CONT'D)... this will throw it for me.

Hiccup OPENS the hinged lid of the device. An arm springs up, equipped with twin bows. They prematurely launch a bola, narrowly missing Gobber... and taking out a Viking at the counter.

VIKINGArggh!

GOBBERSee, now this right here is what

I'm talking about.

HICCUPMild calibration issue.

GOBBER Hiccup. If you ever want to get out there to fight dragons, you need to stop all... Gobber gestures in Hiccup's general direction.

GOBBER (CONT'D) ... this.

HICCUP

(ASTONISHED) But... you just pointed to all of me.

GOBBER Yes! That's it! Stop being all of you.

HICCUP

(THREATENING)Ohhhh...

GOBBER

(MIMICKING)Ohhhhh, yes.

HICCUPYou, sir, are playing a dangerous

game. Keeping this much,raw...Vikingness contained.

Page 19: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

(BEAT)There will be consequences!Gobber tosses him a sword.

GOBBERI'll take my chances. Sword.

Sharpen. Now.Hiccup takes it begrudgingly and lobs it onto the grinding

wheel. He stews... fantasizing...

HICCUP (V.O.)One day I'll get out there. Because

killing a dragon is everythingaround here.

EXT. VILLAGE - LOWER PLAINS - CONTINUOUS

Nadders land, gathering like seagulls around a seemingly vacant house.

HICCUP (V.O.)A Nadder head is sure to get me at

least noticed. The Nadders clamber onto the building, tearing the roof and

walls apart. Sheep pour out and SCATTER.Elsewhere, hippo-like Gronckles pick drying racks clean of

fish and fly off like loaded pelicans.

HICCUP (V.O.) (CONT'D)Gronckles are tough. Taking downone of those would definitely get

me a girlfriend.A stealthy, snake-like dragon head peeks over a rooftop,

breathing gas into a chimney.

Page 20: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

HICCUP (V.O.) (CONT'D)A Zippelback? Exotic, exciting. Two

heads, twice the status. A second head pokes through the door and lights it. KABLAM! The two heads fly through the explosion, their necks zipping together to reveal a single body. It flies past Stoick as he climbs to the top of a CATAPULT

TOWER.

CATAPULT OPERATORThey found the sheep!

STOICK

(FRUSTRATED)Concentrate fire over the lower

bank!

CATAPULT OPERATORFire!

Boulders are catapulted at the corralling Nadders... Just as a huge red dragon whips past, spraying the base of the catapult with sticky fire.

HICCUP (V.O.)And then there's the Monstrous

Nightmare. Only the best Vikings goafter those. They have this nastyhabit of setting themselves on

fire. It emerges from the flames, climbing the catapult with a leering, toothy grin.

Page 21: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

STOICKReload! I'll take care of this.

Stoick takes on the Nightmare, face to hammer. Suddenly, a LOUD BALLISTIC MOANING streaks overhead. The catapult crew ducks.

INT. BLACKSMITH STALL - CONTINUOUS

ON HICCUP, looking up from his work, reacting to the same sound.

HICCUP (V.O.)But the ultimate prize is the

dragon no one has ever seen. Wecall it the--

VIKING

Night Fury! Get down! Vikings everywhere take shelter. The moaning sound BUILDS.

EXT. VILLAGE - CATAPULT - CONTINUOUS

The Monstrous Nightmare suddenly stops fighting and takes flight. Stoick looks skyward.

STOICK

JUMP! KABOOM! The Catapult EXPLODES as though hit by an artillery shell... sending Stoick and the crew leaping for their lives.

HICCUP (V.O.)

Page 22: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

This thing never steals food, nevershows itself, and...

The sound recedes, leaving the crippled catapult in flames.

HICCUP (V.O.) (CONT'D) ...never misses.

(BEAT)No one has ever killed a Night

Fury. That's why I'm going to bethe first.

IN THE STALL Gobber trades his hammer for an axe.

GOBBERMan the fort, Hiccup, they need me

out there! Gobber pauses. Turns with a threatening glare.

GOBBER (CONT'D)Stay. Put. There. You know what I

mean. Gobber charges into the fray, HOLLERING. ON HICCUP, a smirk crosses his face.

EXT. VILLAGE - MOMENTS LATER

WHAM! Hiccup pushes his wheeled contraption through a wall of clustered Vikings. He weaves through the ongoing mayhem, as fast as his legs can carry him.

Page 23: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

VIKING #6 (O.S.)Hiccup, where are you going!

VIKING #7Come back here!

HICCUPI know. Be right back!

ON THE PLAIN BELOW

The Nadders have cornered the house-full of sheep. They close in, ready to spring upon them. Stoick suddenly appears, HURLING FISHING NETS over them. The surprised Nadders are caught. Stoick and his men rush in. A Nadder blasts a hole through its net. Stoick leaps onto it, clamping his thick arms around its head, forcing its jaws shut.

STOICKMind yourselves! The devils still

have some juice in them.

ON THE PLAIN ABOVE

Hiccup reaches a cliff overlooking the smoking CATAPULT and drops the handles to the ground. He cranks several levers, unfolding and then cocking the bowed arms of his contraption. He drops a bola onto a chamber and then pivots the weapon on a gimbal head toward the dark sky. He listens, with his eye pressed to the scope, hand poised on the trigger. He hears the NIGHT FURY approaching... and turns his aim to the defense tower. It closes in for the final strike, completely camouflaged in the night.

Page 24: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

HICCUP

(TO HIMSELF)Come on. Give me something to shoot

at, give me something to shoot at.

KABLAM! The tower topples. The blast of fire illuminates the dragon for a split second. Hiccup pulls the trigger. KERTHUNK! The flexed arms SNAP forward, springing the weapon off the ground. The bola disappears into the sky, followed by a WHACK and a SCREECH.

HICCUP (CONT'D)(surprised, then elated)

Oh I hit it! Yes, I hit it! Didanybody see that?

Hiccup's victory is short-lived. A Monstrous Nightmare appears, slithering up over the lip of the cliff.

HICCUP (CONT'D)Except for you.

ON STOICK, holding down the netted Nadders. He hears a familiar HOLLER and looks up to see... HICCUP running through the PLAZA, SCREAMING, with the NIGHTMARE fast on his heels. Alarmed, Stoick abandons the Nadders and runs off.

STOICK

(to his men, re: theNADDERS)DO NOT let them escape!

IN THE PLAZA

Page 25: powerview.sunrisesd.capowerview.sunrisesd.ca/ourpages/auto/2020/4/14... · Web view2020/04/14  · Next select 5 new photo subjects ,angles , techniques or theme to complete this

Vikings scatter as Hiccup dodges a near fatal blast. The Nightmare's sticky, Napalm-like fire splashes up onto buildings, setting them alight. Hiccup ducks behind the last standing brazier -- the only shelter available. The Nightmare blasts it, spraying fire all around him. Hiccup peers around the smoldering post. No sign of the Nightmare. He turns back to find it leering at him, blocking his escape. It takes a deep breath. Hiccup is finished. Suddenly, Stoick LEAPS between them, tackling the Nightmare to the ground. They tumble and wrestle, resuming their earlier fight. The Nightmare tries to toast him, but only coughs up smoke.

STOICK (CONT'D)You're all out.

He smashes the Nightmare repeatedly in the face, driving it away. It takes to the air and disappears. Winded, Stoick turns to Hiccup.

HICCUP (V.O.)Oh, and there's one more thing you

need to know...

The burnt brazier pole collapses, sending the massive iron basket crashing. It bounces down the hill, destroying as it goes and scattering the Vikings who were holding down the netted Nadders. The freed dragons escape... with several sheep in tow.

HICCUP (CONT'D)Sorry, dad.

EXT. VILLAGE - UPPER PLAZA - CONTINUOUS

The escaped Nadders fly past with sheep in their clutches. The raid is over. The dragons have clearly won. The murmuring crowd eyes Stoick, awaiting his response.

HICCUP

(SHEEPISH)Okay, but I hit a Night Fury.

Stoick grabs Hiccup by the back scruff of his collar andhauls him away, fuming with embarrassment.

HICCUP (CONT'D)It's not like the last few times,

Dad. I mean I really actually hitit. You guys were busy and I had avery clear shot. It went down, justoff Raven Point. Let's get a search

party out there, before it--

STOICK--STOP! Just....stop.

He releases Hiccup. Everyone goes silent, staringexpectantly.

STOICK (CONT'D)Every time you step outside,

disaster follows. Can you not seethat I have bigger problems?

Winter's almost here and I have anentire village to feed!

Hiccup looks around. All eyes are upon him.
