Meetings - VIRTUALLY the Third Tuesday of the Month

President’s Message:

Greetings everyone,

I hope this message finds you all well and that you are enjoying this beautiful, summer like

weather and keeping cool. Now, if we would just get a good rainfall and the caterpillars would go

way, we would be all set.

I am encouraged by the progress that is being made on the Covid front and hopeful that it won’t be

too long before we are back to enjoying family and friends and all of the activities we have missed

participating in this past year and a half.

On that note, plans are in the works for our first in person membership meeting. Indeed, a time for

a celebration! Barring any more setbacks, the event will be held outdoors (weather permitting) and

is scheduled for September 21st, the date of our regular monthly meeting. Hopefully, by that time,

we will be well into the final phase of reopening and most, if not all of us, will have been fully

vaccinated. We are also aware that some may remain hesitant to go out in large crowds and we

will take that into account when planning the event, making sure that all safety protocols are

followed. More details of the event will be shared as they are finalized. Fingers crossed!!

Our guest speaker for Tuesday’s meeting is Barrie Martin who is with the “Yours Outdoors”

organization and will be talking on “Vacation in your own backyard.”

Our Passions and Profile speaker is Joe Ursano who will talk about “Living with an Ostomy”

I hope you will all sign in to hear their presentations. – The link to the zoom meeting is below.

Remember that your comments and suggestions are always welcomed by the management

committee.

I look forward to seeing you again on the big screen

Cheers

Bill

Speaking of speakers – Passions and Profiles Needs YOU!

We would like to continue our Passions and Profiles series. We need members willing and comfortable doing a Zoom presentation for our meetings for the next while

Passions and Profiles can cover any number of topics and the time allotted is usually about 15 min + or -. You could profile yourself and your life experiences to now, or perhaps enthrall us all with trips you took before travelling ground to a halt. Or maybe you did travel around our beautiful country recently and would like to tell us about your trip.

Passions and Profiles with a TWIST – Jan Rickard

A game of virtual Canadian Trivia among several Probus members gave rise to the thought that, since there seems to be a lack of volunteers for "passions" presentations, Probus members should be invited to present stories of interesting encounters they have had with well-known persons (aka "celebrities").  It turned out that among the group of trivia players there were several such stories.  One can only imagine how many there might be among the larger membership.

So here is the challenge:

If you have a "celebrity encounter" story, contact Jan Rickard and she will schedule the story for an upcoming Probus meeting.

The story should be about 5 - 15 minutes and you will present during the "passions" time slot OR, you could record your story and it would be played during the passions time slot. OR, you could write it and someone else could read it to the group.

Depending on the response, the management committee may decide to award some sort of a prize for the best story of the year, possibly based on votes from the membership at large.

So please contact Jan Rickard and get your story scheduled.  We know the stories are out there - let's hear them!

Care Bear CornerAn important value of our Probus community is that we support those members experiencing illness or loss. Our thoughts go out to those members and families in need of our good wishes.

If your Club can be of support to you or a fellow club member please let us know.

Now in these isolating times we need more than ever to look out for one another!

Paddling – Judi Brouse

Paddling season is here and we are still in the pandemic. The government expects to enter stage one recovery on June 14. That will give us some ability to get together. Until that time we cannot get together in groups to paddle. As an alternative, I thought I'd send out paddling suggestions for the next couple of weeks. You could then paddle them at your leisure and send me pictures that we can put in the monthly newsletter. More info later in the newsletter.

Bike Riding – Joe Ursano

Joe has been organizing NON-Probus rides since last fall. His group, called “We Cycle Ad Hoc” has a Facebook page if you want to see more of the action. - https://fb.me/wecycleadhoc

Last Monday this group did the longest ride of the year at just under 50 km. We usually average about 12 cyclists on each ride. We stop a lot and "socialize" safely at a distance of course!!

Paddling – Judi Brouse

On June 7, a few people just happened to be at Annie William's Park at 9:30 and had a lovely paddle down the river and back.  It was a warm and sunny morning and we enjoyed seeing the change in the river over the last year. More boathouses and restored shorelines from the flood a few years ago.

The suggested paddle for the week of June 14 is Spence Lake and the north branch of the Muskoka River. There is a put-in (boat launch) in Muskoka Falls just off Highway 118. (not the beach). Webbs and Brouses will be paddling it again on Monday leaving at 9:30 - just saying.

I hope we will be able to have more organized paddles soon. In the meantime, enjoy the next couple of weeks of paddling and we might see you out there.
