A PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND
With Rev. Daren Erisman, Ph. D. House of Prayer Lutheran Church
Escondido, CAJanuary 6th, to January 17th, 2019
Come join Pastor Erisman in a 12-day Holy Land tour that literally walks in the footsteps of Jesus and explores the sacred intersection of the three Abrahamic faiths. With Christian tour guides, based in Bethlehem, we will have the opportunity to fellowship with Christian families whose Christian ancestry goes back to the 3rd century and participate in the Orthodox Christmas Night Mass at the Nativity Church in Bethlehem, the birth place of Jesus.
Exploring Jesus’ early years in Galilee, including the Synagogue in Nazareth where he preached, we take a boat across the Sea of Galilee, visit Cana and the House of Peter in Capernaum. We dip and wash our feet in the Jordan River in remembrance of our own baptisms, and later, walk in the footsteps of Jesus as he preached at the South Steps of the Temple in Jerusalem, prepared his Last Supper, prayed in the Garden of Olives, and traveled those last difficult steps on the Via Dolorosa.
With the famous sites of Jacob’s well, the caves of Qumran (Dead Sea Scrolls), Masada and the old City of Nablus, one of the oldest markets in the world, we also explore the places and people that have called this land “Holy.” Visiting with Samaritans as well as Jewish, Christian, and Muslim families, we will not only explore what places make up this Holy Land, but what people make up this ancient and complex place—where three major religions claim as sacred. We will visit the shared Cave of the Patriarchs (Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, …) and the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, where Jews pray at the Wailing Wall, Christians remember Jesus teaching, and Muslims gather at the Dome of the Rock to reflect on Muhammad’s Night Journey.
Walk the footsteps of Jesus
In the Land of Abraham
This is a “Holy” land for many reasons and one of the most fascinating places on earth. After going here, scripture will never be the same for you, nor the news you read. Words cannot fully describe this amazing patchwork of land and peoples. We will explore together, pray together and certainly eat together—just as God intends.
Pastor Erisman or “Pastor Daren” has served as a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for the past 21 years. He visited the Holy Land early in his ministry and is anxious to return. His interest in the area and its people has contributed to his deep study of the larger region and its religions. Pastor Daren has a Masters in Islamic Studies and a Ph.D. in Christian Theology. He hopes to share his knowledge and passion as we “walk the steps of Jesus in the land of Abraham.”
OPTIONAL 2-DAY EXTENSION OF TRIP TO VISIT PETRA:
You are invited to extend the trip two more days and visit the famous site of Petra in Jordan (featured in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). Petra is the ancient city (300s BC) of the Nabataean Kingdom and has been called, “a rose-red city half as old as time. “ For those who choose this extension, we will also take a brief tour of Jordan’s capital, Amman, a favorite destination of travelers for its blend of ancient sites and modern attractions.
