Distinctive Features Spring 2016 Newsletter Letter from the President Dear Colleagues, ‘Tis spring and the speech-language pathologist’s and audiologist’s fancy turns to CEUs and parties. We have an abundance of excellent CEU events in this area this spring. SHAWNY is co-sponsoring with Autism Services and the Autism Society on the topic of treating autism. As well, we have programs at the University at Buffalo, Buffalo State, and SUNY Fredonia. Spring is also the time to say a very hearty “thank you” to people who served on the SHAWNY board and have now retired. Valerie Parker and Sue Bognar were our fearless leaders as co-presidents and can now rest a wee bit, but not too much, because Valerie continues as our Board of Regional Association Presidents representative. We also thank Carrie Cline, audiology vice- president, Michelle Galvez, recording secretary, Terri Cinotti, electronic information chair, and our school-based coordinators, Nancy Hadyn-Hawkins, Jennifer Sinclair, and Chris Buscaglia for all of their contributions over the years. As we thank our former officers and committee chairs, we have the opportunity to welcome our new officers and chairs. Lindsay Dobos has stepped up to the post of vice-president of speech-language pathology. Brittany Filip and Ashley Nans, both still graduate students, are on board as recording secretaries. Jody Marshall and Gretchen Burden have taken on coordinating the schools group. And yours truly, Debbie Insalaco, forgot to take a step backwards when people asked for nominations for president. My job would be a whole lot harder were it not for the advice of our past presidents and continuing work of Sal Gruttadauria, Marie Meyers, Kim Nelson, Tracy Panzarella, Caitlyn Saj Pawlikowski, Amy Ratajczak, Angela Stranahan, Joe Sonnenberg, and Stephanie Verrico.

Distinctive Features Spring 2016 Newsletter

Letter from the PresidentDear Colleagues,

‘Tis spring and the speech-language pathologist’s and audiologist’s fancy turns to CEUs and parties.

We also thank Carrie Cline, audiology vice-president, Michelle Galvez, recording secretary, Terri Cinotti, electronic information chair, and our school-based coordinators, Nancy Hadyn-Hawkins, Jennifer Sinclair, and Chris Buscaglia for all of their contributions over the years.

Life cannot be all work and no play, so we have fun events planned and many reasons to celebrate. A get-together/networking/have a good time happy hour(s) is scheduled April 23 at Resurgence. One of the many reasons to celebrate goes to Amy Ratajczak who deserves all praise for getting our new website up and taking over from Terri Cinotti. As a result of this hard work, SHAWNY has been named Regional Association of the Year. Later on, at our annual awards banquet May 3 at Salvatore’s we will celebrate the accomplishments of a student who has received speech, language, or hearing services and will honor two people who have provided outstanding service to our field. A good crowd makes every celebration merrier, so I hope to see all of you there.

Sincerely,Debbie Insalaco, SHAWNY President

March Update

Susan Antonellis, Vice President, discussed the BRAP student scholarship. A motion was made and voted unanimously to forego the student scholarship another year.  It was then suggested by Valerie

Parker that perhaps a BRAP Student Honorarium for the NYSSLHA Convention beginning in 2017 should take the place of the scholarship with a 250-word essay as the criterion. A vote on sponsoring a speaker

at the 2016 NYSSLHA convention at $100 was passed unanimously.Nominations were taken for BRAP Distinguished Service and Distinguished Regional Awards. Andrea

Abramovich-SHAHV was nominated for Distinguished Service and SHAWNY nominated for Distinguished Regional. Both were unanimously voted in favor of.

The Social Communication Program™ (Ages 5-18): Focuses on eye contact, listening behaviors, interpreting nonverbal cues (facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice), initiating, maintaining, and terminating conversation appropriately, turn-taking, establishing and maintaining friendship, compromising and cooperation skills, coping with transitions and changes in routine, trying new things, problem-solving as a “team-player”, and much more…

These evidence-based programs are taught by speech language pathologists who have been highly trained. Results of post-testing as well as parent and teacher reports have revealed significant improvements in the classroom and at home!
