‘Pear-Shaped Julie’
This is a beautifully feminine shape usually the ‘Pear-
shaped Julies’ are sometimes even more curvy on the
thighs than the hips. The mistake ‘Julie’s’ sometimes
make is that instead of thinking they have a small
waist; they think they have large hips or bust. All this
figure shape needs is balance between the top and
bottom. Wearing something dramatic, even a bright
colour on top or a very crisp white cotton shirt with
smart buttons or neck interest. One colour from toe to
waist or bustline works if you then introduce a wider
lapel some ruffles, prints, scarves, flounces or
jewellery. Opt for dramatic interest on the top half eg:
cowl neck drapes in silk satin, ruching or horizontal
stripey jumpers and long vertical seam lines below the
waist in a darker more somber colour.
The Pear-shaped types often have a neat waist, which
needs to be shown off if you can find a waist band to
fit neatly on you. Low waist styles can emphasise the
hip line even more if they are too low. Also slim leg
jeans are unforgiving and create a carrot shape to the
leg. A tailored not quite tight pencil skirt or fitted
dress can look fantastic on your shape, as long as it is
unfussy. This works if it is semi-fitted to emphasise
your curves, without going in too tightly. This figure
shape can look very good in business suits and if the
jacket is too small, buy separates or customize with tie
clasps or button flaps at the back waist or upper shirt
sleeves, to add a little interest and character without
having to reshape them. For those ‘Pear-shaped Julies’
with very small curves on top a matching bold blouse
and jacket colour, with a darker skirt can help to
redress the balance.

‘Short Small Suzy’
If you are a ‘Short Small Suzy’ consider shopping in an outlet
that caters for you eg: Precis Petite or similar. The perfect suit
length for you is just below the knee cap as this gives the
illusion of height. Ensure your sleeve lengths are right
especially on a good coat or jacket –try to get it taken up as this
stops you looking swamped. Empire Line dresses with shaped
figure hugging seams are perfect if you are smaller than 5’1”
this also adds height as do shorter fitted jacket styles. You are
generally better with tailored styles, keeping brighter colour
and features to the shoulder area. Or better still wear a small
but characterful hat or distinctive earrings.
‘Long Tall Sally’
This is actually a make of clothes – especially suited to taller
women. They tend to cater for women over 5’8”. Any
designer range will possibly suit you, but these can be
expensive, try TK Max for their designer samples. You can
wear long flowing palazzo pants with very long dramatic coats
and cardigans. The more you cut yourself across with
horizontal lines the shorter you will look, e.g: contrasting tops
and bottoms and ankle straps on shoes, if this is what you
desire. Your worst length is just below the knee as it can make
you seem gangly, go for a longer length skirt or just above the
knee. You can wear the layered look to great effect, but bring
bright colour down towards the gound with flat patent ballet
pumps or coloured boots.
