In order to develop their understanding, children need to hear examples of questions, answers and comments linked to things they can see in their everyday environments, in books and in pictures. They should then able to answer questions and make comments, as they have heard lots of good adult models in the right context. How do we teach this? When talking to and playing with the child, you should use the hand rule where you say 4 comments to every 1 question you ask. Ensure you repeat key words and phrases over and over in your comments as repetition is the best way for the child to learn language. When commenting, adults should keep their language at the child’s level and stress key words. For example, for a child using single words, you should model 1 or 2 key word phrases to help extend their language (e.g. child says “car”, adult says “driving the car ”). o Always use the correct grammar when modelling comments or answers to questions.

For example, for a child using single words, you should model 1 or 2 key word phrases to help extend their language (e.g. child says “car”, adult says “driving the car”).

o Always use the correct grammar when modelling comments or answers to questions. The Speech and Language Therapist can help you work out the correct level of language to use - this may be single words, short phrases or sentences.

Use a visual cue to help the child understand exactly what you are talking about. This might be pointing to a picture/ object, using a gesture or showing the object to the child.

You can do this throughout the day, including during play, when looking at books, photos or pictures and when out and about (e.g. when watching other children in the park or at nursery, at the shops or when looking out of the window).

When looking at books you do not always have to read the story. Instead, ask and answer questions about the story and the pictures. Books can be great activities to model comments, questions and answers.
