Action for /ie/ is: Stand to attention and salute, saying /ie/, /ie/. Oral language possibilities before reading the story: Predict what you think is going to happen. What

can you see in the picture? What is the little boy doing? What kind of clothes does he have on? Where do you think he is going? What is he looking at? Do you remember the name for what you see in the mirror? (reflection), etc.

Clive has been invited to a party. Clive’s dad is a sailor in the navy and he has given Clive a hat from his ship. Clive wants to dress up as a sailor like his dad and wear the hat to the party. His mother makes him a sailor’s outfit. Just before the party, Clive’s dad comes home on leave. Clive insists on wearing his new outfit to meet him off the ship. He waves and waves when he sees his dad and runs up and gives him a big hug. Dad admires his outfit and says, “If you are a sailor, you will have to learn how to salute and say, ‘ie, ie!’ ” When they get home, he shows Clive how to salute. Clive has a go in front of the mirror, saluting and saying, “ie, ie!”

Questions: What is the boy’s name? Where has he been invited? Have you ever been invited to a party? What happened? What was your favourite thing to do at the party? What job does Clive’s Dad have? What does a sailor do? What piece of clothing does his Dad give him? What is that as gaeilge? (hata) What does Clive want to dress up as for the party? Who makes him an outfit? What does Clive do when he sees his Dad? What does Clive’s Dad teach him to do? Can you salute like Clive?

Formation: Same here as with /oa/ and /ai/. The new sound now is /ie/ not /i/ and /e/ on their own but /ie/. Make sure your child knows which letter to write first when forming this new sound. Allow your child time to form the new sound in a wide range of multisensory ways like the previous sounds, i.e. in the air, in sand, on sand paper, in flour, with playdoh, with pasta shapes, with pebbles, etc. Once your satisfied with their /ie/ then let them do their formations with a pencil, marker, etc.

Words containing /ie/ - Ask your children if they know any words that contain /ie/. Maybe they could go around the house and make their own sound basket.

Adding lego towers – Show me a red tower of 5 and a blue tower of 2. How many altogether? Show me a yellow tower of 4 and a white tower of 4. How many altogether, etc.

Do the same as last week with the towers up to 8 (as seen below) Give your child a piece of paper and call out various numbers for them to write (0-8). Next ask them

to write the numbers in order. Then ask them to draw a certain number of objects too, i.e. Draw 3 circles, etc.

Irish: Bua na Cainte Ceacht 9.1

Click on the yellow speech bubble for 9.1 to hear the comhrá and the new vocabulary; Cé leis ___? – Who owns ____?, Is liomsa ___ - I own ___.

Comple the game for ceacht 9.1.

English: Onset and Rime – at words.

Dictation work – give your child a page and a pencil. Ask them to fold their arms or put hands on head while listening to your instructions. Today you are looking at works ending in /at/.

Call out words such as hat. Sound out each word very carefully: h-a-t. Children will clap out each sound they hear and then count out the sounds using their fingers. Do this a good few times until you are certain they are getting each sound in the word. Then let them write the word.

Words – hat, cat, mat, bat, rat, sat, fat, pat. If you had time. You could write /at/ on a piece of card/paper. And have all the individual starting

sounds cut out. The children will add a new initial sound at a time to /at/ and see if they can read the new words they create.

Read these sentences:

Maths: Weight – Heavy and Light

Ask your child if they know what the words heavy and light mean? Yes that’s right something that is heavy weighs a lot. An object that is light doesn’t weight that much. Use a seesaw as an example. The heavier person/object would be sitting on the ground whereas the lighter person or object would be in the air.

Ask them how they would weigh themselves? Show them a weighing scales and ask them to weigh themselves (if you have one).

How do you weigh food like flour for a recipe? Show them your food weighing scales. Why is it important to know how much flour, etc, goes into a recipe? Yes that’s right you need the exact measurements of ingredients when baking so the food tastes nice and everything turns out right!

Show your child a picture of the balancing scales below and tell them that is how we measure heavy and light objects in school. The object in the basket that is heavier falls to bottom and the basket with the lighter object rises in the air.

Weighing Activity : Get a clothes hanger, some twine and two containers like below. Hang up the hanger on a door knob. Objects to weigh – apple, small juice carton/yoghurt, two teddies – small and big, pencil case and a lunch box. (If you don’t have some of these use alternatives). Get your child to estimate which object is going to be lighter. The hanger should go up and down like the above balancing scales.

I would love a few pictures if anyone is able to try the hanger activity!

Or

Human weighing scales activity: Use your two arms as the weighing scales. The heavier object will make your arm fall by your side while the lighter object will make your arm rise up in the air.

Suggestions to keep you busy (not that you aren’t busy enough!!)

RTE school hub are doing a new segment on Dublin Zoo next week, watch if you get a chance. (We might look closer at this the next week)

Draw a picture and write a few sentences for a loved one that you haven’t seen in a while. Post or send a picture to their phone.

Some children are working away in their gardens. Help water the flowers/ vegetables. Plant new flowers. Help create nice window boxes, etc.

Watch a new movie or a show. Talk about the characters in it. Discuss what happened in the beginning, middle and end. What was your favourite part? Did you like the ending? Would you like a different ending? Why/why not?
