Features: Exposed brickwork/masonry Usually old buildings Bricks/stone are used to enclose the building View into the building is usually restricted to only the windows/doorways Amount of light allowed into the building is much less than a light building Much less use of glass as an enclosure Glass is often stained giving a darkened/old feeling

Contrasting Buildings

New Law Building Features:

Use of voids/empty spaceso Gives the effect of a transitioning part of the building or “line” of contrast

Contrasting use of materials Prevalent use of glass as enclosure

o Allows for view inside the building and also acts as an enclosure Lightness of voids at the bottom make the top of the building seem much heavier

o Contrasting effect Long and thin posts/pillars give the impression of a light building

o These posts however are holding up a “heavy” weight “heavy” weight also due to large scale of the building
