ICT seminar- week 9

Class dojo

Software which can be used to reward good behaviour and talk about negative behaviour (used to give feedback). The software can also be used to check attendance. Parents can also check the software to see how their behaviour is throughout the school day.

Class dojo can be used on the computer and found in the app store. Texts can then be sent through to parents to alert them of the progress of their child.

In today’s session we are looking at e-safety, along with the fast pace of technology. This includes keep children safe online and how we can talk to children about internet safety issues. Our level of e-safety changes as technology safety. Instead we could use the term ‘digital citizenship’.

Digital citizenship

- Digital access- age restrictions, gambling, signing up to memberships

- Digital commerce- buying, selling, shopping

- Digital communication- Facebook, twitter (social media including their age restrictions)

- Digital literacy- how we read, write and speak online

- Digital etiquette- right and wrong, being polite, not using the passwords of others

- Digital law- copyright, fraud

- Digital security- passwords

- Digital Health and Wellness- not being on there too long (consider usage)

- Digital rights and responsibilities- right to privacy, access

Why are we learning about this?

The internet is a valuable resource, which is quickly evolving. This is important to learn about because it covers multiple areas that children will encounter in their everyday lives.

AEP- acceptable use of policies. As a staff member, are you allowed to take photographs on my phone in the classroom?

Useful websites

www.codeit.co.uk – digital literacy planning, however a plan needs to be created so this can be weaved in.

www.thinkyouknow.co.uk – a government website that covers all ages on internet safety.

www.childline.co.uk – recent information from the charity.

www.commonsenseeducation.com – useful resource for videos and giving advice.

Byron report 2008

“… independent review of the risks children face from the internet and video games”.

Cyber bullying

‘Bullying for electronic means.’ This includes: text, Facebook and YouTube. ‘Kind hands, kind feet and kind words’. Cyber bullying can be threats, manipulation, exclusion, public postings, stalking, prejudice and hacking. We therefore need to build awareness.

I am a good digital citizen…

- We need to talk about why we are using the internet. For example, what is the need?

- Children need an awareness of this to help them to understand what it is used for. This can be shown through displays in the classroom or all around the school.
