Daylight saving time is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months so that evening daylight lasts longer. The US government encouraged daylight saving time during WW1 as a way to conserve coal during wartime.

On May 18, 1917, the US government passed the Selective Service Act or Selective Draft Act which authorized the United States federal government to raise a national army for service in World War I through conscription.
