Writing-L.I. – To create an organised plan for writing by using note-taking Creative writing

This week we will complete a paragraph to practise a range of writing skills.

Remember it does not need to be a complete story. Once you have an idea to focus on, whether a series of events or a description of a setting or character, you should then do some ‘talk for writing’ – find someone to tell your story to and try saying it in lots of different ways.

When you are ready, write and review, taking time to redraft things as you read over your work when needed. At the end of this section of your grid, you will find two levels of targets for openers and connectives etc. that you can choose from.

Your writing should take inspiration from the image above. The document below (also in Teams files) may help to give you a starter sentence and some ideas to help plan your work.

words. This week’s word list features the ‘us’ sound, spelt ‘ous’ and found at the end of adjectives. Try to identify the root word in each one which will often be a noun (sometimes the word in the list will be in its root form already).

-ousnervous dangerous miraculousfamous enormous mischievoushideous fabulous tempestuousprecious generous adventurousprevious humorous ambidextrous

jealous blasphemousmarvellous cantankerousperilous fortuitouspoisonousridiculousscrupulousvigorousambiguoushilariousmonstrous

Choose 20 words from the list that you find reasonably challenging. Try to find other common elements of spelling rules within the words, such as double consonants and magic e. Check how many syllables and how many sounds there are in each word. For example:

ridiculous – has 4 syllables (rid-ic-ul-ous) and is made of 9 distinct sounds (r-i-d-i-c-u-l-ou-s). It has a single ‘d’ even though there are two short vowels either side of it, and it ends in ous.

Practise your words as we normally would in class using your jotter. Once you have copied and practiced the lists, get someone at home to quiz you on your list. Its root word is ridicule.Word building – choose ten words and create extensions of these words using common prefixes and suffixes. For this list, it is best to determine the root word and work from there. For example: nervous has nerve as its root and we can turn it into unnerving.

If you have signed up for Sumdog you can complete spelling games there. Additionally, you can use Doorway speller online from the link below:

and use them to talk about school.

Task 1In this task we are going to learn how to say the names of the objects and school subjects. Remember, pronunciation is very important so make sure you focus on this when completing this work.

Also, you need to learn to use le/la/les correctly when saying the names -la is feminine and singularle is masculine and singularles is plural for both feminine/masculine words.

We are using the following website again -https://www.french-games.net/

1. Go to intermediate level – choose school – the classroom – go through tutorial. 2. Go back to intermediate level – choose school – then school subjects - go through tutorial. 3. Go through these tasks as many times as you need to, to help you learn and remember the

different names of the objects and school subjects.

Task 2In this tasks you are going to use what you learned in Task 1 to practice your pronunciation and to help you learn the names.

1. Use the matching cards for classroom objects in the icon below to play different games. You don’t need to print them – you could copy them and make your own.You could use them to play snap or turn them over so you can’t see them then turning 2 at a time to find the matches (Pelmanism). You can create your own games – be inventive. It’s really important that you say the words/names of the objects as you play the games as this will help you learn their names.

Use the following link if the icon doesn’t work -https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/cfe2-l-135-classroom-objects-snap-game-french-francais

2. Do the same games as at 1 above for School Subjects. You will have to create the cards/games yourself as there are no cards to copy. Use the information from the activity you did at Task 1 (https://www.french-games.net/ ) to help you create the games.

**************************************Keep up your mental maths practice.

In your files on Teams, there will be a test posted for all levels each week. You can complete this and then check it using answers which will be made available the following week by your teacher.

**************************************Health and Wellbeing-L.I. – To work with others to set and achieve goals, develop and improve skills, and celebrate successes.

It is the time of year when we would normally have our Sports Day at Craiglockhart Primary. Your task this week focuses on others as well as yourself – you need to become the organiser, motivator and general fountain of enthusiasm to create a Sports Day at home.

Below is a guide with some tips and suggested events (follow the link if the embedded file won’t open).

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/home-sports-day-cfe-hw-60

You could add any events that you can think of that can be safely completed by everyone you are planning for. Be creative – you may invent a new sport, or just finally get to try Quidditch with everyone!Below is a template you may use to draw up a new event of your own design.

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/cfe2-p-87-design-your-own-sports-day-event-activity-sheet

The main goal is for you to plan for a fun experience for all and to keep it organised. If you want to keep scores you could use a sheet like the one below (or make your own).

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/cfe2-p-81-sports-day-score-sheet-activity-sheet

If you want to have some fun creating prizes, you could make some medals from foil and some nice ribbon, or even bake some nice biscuit medals like the ones below.

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/medal-cookiesSocial Studies-L.I. - To learn about the events that led up to Japan surrendering, resulting in the war in the east and WW2 ending.Last week, you learned about the war in Europe ending on VE Day (8th May 1944), however, the war in the

east still continued after this date between Japan and America (and the allies).

WW2 came to an end on Victory in Japan Day (V-J Day) which happened on 15th August 1945, 15 months after VE Day. Japan’s surrender came after 2 atomic bombs were dropped on 2 cities in the country – Hiroshima and Nagasaki- killing tens of thousands of civilians. This was the first time in the world this type of weapon had been used.

Atomic bombs (nuclear weapons) have not been used as weapons against human beings/countries since the end of WW2. They have been developed and tested and 9 countries currently have nuclear weapons: the US, UK, Russia, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea. Most of these countries hold nuclear weapons because they are seen as deterrents to prevent their use in the future and to maintain peace. Some people disagree with this view and believe weapons of this type should be banned.

Task

In the following work, we are going to investigate and develop an understanding of why the Americans used atomic weapons to bomb Japan and think about whether dropping the bombs was right or wrong.

You should watch the video clips in Task 1 and 2 of Talking and Listening to add to your understanding of this task.

1. Go through the following PowerPoint

2. To help you understand the different viewpoints about dropping the bombs and the dilemma that the American’s were facing in making their decision, read the arguments in the following document and sort them into for and against dropping the bombs.

3. Finally, you are going to create a piece of writing or a presentation of your point of view on

whether atomic bombs should have been used to end the war. Use the arguments in the work above to help you and the writing frame in the document below as a guide on how to structure your writing/presentation.

4. Read or present your viewpoint to someone at home and discuss what they think about the dropping of the atomic bombs.

RME/Science/Technology- L.I. - To learn about a current scientific achievement.History was made last week when two NASA astronauts successfully boarded the International Space Station. It is the first time astronauts have been sent into space by a private company, SpaceX. SpaceX is

Did the seeds survive space travel? The STEM challenge this week – Invent a Game/Sport.This week we are all getting sporty! Can you invent a game for everyone in your house to try out? Use anything you can find around you house. A rolled up pair of socks can be used for many things! You can throw them, use them as a marker, put them over your hands for an extra challenge in a game (try playing snap with socks over your hands). Use your imagination, I look forward to seeing some fun games.

Expressive Art (Drama/Music/Art)-L.I. - To recognise musical symbols and music vocabulary.

Music - ‘Give It All You’ve Got.’S.C. I can identify electronic music and some style and structural concepts used in music.

A sporting event / challenge, requires you to give your very best. Not everyone is good at sport, everyone is special / good at something. Whatever that may be, the important thing is to try to do your best! This song is all about keeping going, giving it, as the song says: ‘give it all you’ve got.’

All tasks are in the document below (also in Files on Teams).

class but know you are all hard workers and keen learners and you have done so well to adapt to these past couple of months.

Some items of note this week:

In Teams, we sometimes added files/documents as attachments to our comments to enable you to access them – we are going to stop this. From now on, we will only add them to the Files section in Teams as our way of sharing files/documents on Teams (we will also still be embedding any documents we can in your learning grid and providing web links when we can – some files can only be shared in certain ways).

You have hopefully been working on a letter to your high school as part of the writing tasks set on your learning grids. Just a reminder that the deadline to submit your letter writing is 19 th June.

If you haven’t seen it in the newsletter, some Craiglockhart pupils have begun a caterpillar made of painted stones that is growing and wrapping itself around the school fence in a big hug – you might want to add to it if you have the opportunity.

Over the coming weeks, we know many high schools have tasks they will want pupils to do as part of transition and they will be contacting pupils to arrange this. Please remember that transition work set by your high school is the most important work. If you find you have too much to do in those weeks, we are happy for you to do less work from your grid to enable you to complete the tasks set by your high school.

Take care, be safe and email if you have any questions.
