English Language Arts Lab Nine Mrs. Norman Welcome to Lab! The English Language Arts Lab Nine meets during the trade cycle. We will meet each day for fifty minutes. Your trade teacher will escort you to my room. Once here, we have some routines it would be helpful for you to know... 1. STAR Reading: You will be given the STAR Reading Assessment. This test tells us how well you are reading. It also provides us with your ZONE OF PROXIMAL DEVELOPMENT (ZPD) that will help us work together to find you a strong reading match when you choose a book. Our goal for you this year is to gain one year of growth in your reading. STAR Testing takes place in September, January, and June. 2. AR Reading: You will be reading twenty minutes per day. When you enter the room, you will gather your folder, your AR Book, and AR Journal. These are the tools you will need to be successful in the classroom. I use a timer to keep track of time while we read. 3. Assignments: You will be asked to complete a number of short assignments in lab and a few longer assignments. These assignments will be specifically geared to address a problem

Welcome to Lab!

These assignments will be specifically geared to address a problem area or an enrichment area. If there is a topic you are struggling in, let's say spelling, we will spend time focused on helping you improve in this area.

4. Readiness: You will need to wear your Exploratory Gear (blue shirt tucked in, boots, hair pulled back, and identification) during Lab. When you have chosen and been accepted into your shop, that shop's uniform will need to be on your person for Lab.

5. Grading:

AR Reading 40%Preparation/Preparedness 10%

Classwork 40%Quizzes 10%

Preparation/Preparedness Breakdown:A daily grade is given for preparation/preparedness. Students earn one (1) point in each category each day if expectations are met.

Uniform: Shirt tucked in, Bootlaces tied, no hats or hoods, and no ripped pants

Student ID: Presented on person

Pen or Pencil: Student must provide own writing utensil

AR Reading Book: Books are to be kept in the classroom and they are to be kept current. Please return and check out books on your own time whenever possible

6. OrganizationPlease bring a three ring binder with one set of five dividers to be kept in class. You will have weekly notebook checks to help you stay on track. Notebook checks will count as a quiz grade each week. Learning a system of organization for all of your classes will help you stay on top of your work load and begin to instill a strong skill set for organization in your trade.

7. HelpIf at any time, you have a question or need to speak to me, please e-mail Jennifer. [email protected]. I check my e-mail everyday at 7:15 a.m. and 7:15 p.m. If you would like to speak in person, I am at school everyday until 3:00 p.m. feel free to drop by room 142.

Lab Nine is a co-taught class. Mr. Orcutt and Mrs. Collelo are also strong resources in our classroom. Please feel free to ask them for help with any assignments. They are here to work with you and help you succeed.
