What would you say/do/think? Watch Confessions of a depressed comic: http://www.ted.com/talks/kevin_breel_confessions_of_a_depressed_comic Read the handout packet for a transcript of the video and related comic strips. 2) What did Kevin say that you identified with while watching the video (what opinions did he have that you agree with)? What comic strips do you identify with? 3) What did you learn (what ideas or opinions are new to you)? 4) What ideas or opinions are confusing for you? What new questions do you have? Read the handout packet for supporting people with depression and suicidal thoughts. 5) On the back, cross out quotes that show judgment/criticism, quotes that minimize the person’s pain, quotes that make comparisons or offer advice, and quotes that show tough love. 6) On the back, circle or highlight quotes that show how you will be there for the person, quotes that ask about how the person feels, and quotes that urge someone to get professional help. 7) Compare your answer to the first question before the video to the suggestions in the packet. What are some things you would do/say/think that aligned with the suggestions? 8) What are some things the packet suggests you do/say/think differently (and why)?

“It’s okay to be going through this. You need professional help because this situation can get worse.”

“Have you talked about this with your family?”

“You’re my closest friend, I’ll help you get through this and if I can’t, I’ll get you someone who can.”

“Suicide is taking the easy way out.”

“I’m here for you through everything. So you don’t have to fake it with me or go through it alone.”

“You can have a mental breakdown at 2 am and you can call me and I’ll just listen to how you feel.”

“How long have you felt this way?”

“Life won’t work unless you do.”

“I really care about you so please do something to get help or else I will do it for you.”

“Suicide is the most selfish thing you can do! Think about your friends and family that you will hurt”

“I love you and we will get through this together.”

“Is there someone you can talk to that has experience with these thoughts?”

“If you’re really thinking about taking your life, do me one last favor and go seek help.”

“Get over it. Other people have it worse.”

“I can’t live without you. You mean the world to me.”

“Imagine the pain you would cause for the people who care about you. Just live your life the best you can.”

“Please don’t do anything stupid.”

“Are you feeling suicidal right now?”

“Think positive when everything seems negative.”

“You are a coward if you believe that your life is meaningless and a fool if you believe death is the escape.”

“I know that you feel worthless and like a burden, but to me you are worth more than you know and I love you”

“You may feel scared but you’re not alone and I’m always going to be here, no matter what happens.”

“Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.”

“You have your entire life ahead of you. Don’t do it. Once you do it, there’s no coming back.”

“You’re not only hurting yourself, you’re hurting others too.”

“Killing yourself isn’t the way to solve your problems. Suicide is never the answer.”

“You are amazing; you have so many great things ahead of you.”

“Hang in there. It gets better.”

“Is there anything I can do to help?”

“I got dumped too. You will get over it.”

“You’ve survived every day until today, and you’ll survive this one too.”

“I am a friend—not a therapist—but I promise you this: I will listen. I will care.”

“If you hate your life, then change it!”

“Suicide doesn't end the pain; it just passes it to someone else.”

“Stop being dramatic, you probably just had a rough day.”

“You look sad, you can talk to me.”

“There are people that can help you, but they need to know that you need help.”
