Chores Sub-school: Secondaries Lesson number: 2 Week: 4 Date: Tuesday 5 th May What am I learning? I am learning to dust shelves. What is my teacher looking for? I can remove and organize objects to dust a shelf. Let’s dust. No one likes it. I mean, NOBODY. Not even my Grandma. And she does it a lot. I don’t like it. But I have found, whilst planning these lessons, that my shelves are in desperate need of a dusting. As you may have seen, my shelves are FULL of stuff. ChoresSub-school: Secondaries Lesson number: 2 Week: 4 Date: Tuesday 5th May

What am I learning? I am learning to dust shelves.

What is my teacher looking for? I can remove and organize objects to dust a shelf.

Let’s dust. No one likes it. I mean, NOBODY. Not even my Grandma. And she does it a lot. I don’t like it. But I have found, whilst planning these lessons, that my shelves are in desperate need of a dusting. As you may have seen, my shelves are FULL of stuff. Books, boxes and all manner of small figurines and models. Having so many little things sitting around is a dust bunny’s dream. As you can see below, this shelf in particular is in a bit of a state.

As you can see where I have wiped a bit at the front of the shelf that there was quite the layer of dust build-up on there. So, it’s time to get to work.

Now what equipment do we need for dusting. I am sure that when people think of dusting, they think of a feather duster. Well in this case, we aren’t going to use one of those. They tend to just throw the dust up rather than remove it.

What we use is one of these handy things:

No, I am not a muppet. It’s just a glove, calm down. But what it does, is pick up all the dust and trap it in the “fur”. Then you can just pop it in the wash with your laundry and it will be good as new.

If you don’t have one of these things, a cloth or tea towel will do the job. Just don’t use a wet cloth, as we don’t want to clump all the dust together, just remove it.

What you really want, is a “micro-fibre” cloth. These will pick up dust rather than just move it around your shelf.

Dusting is pretty easy. First, we just remove all of the stuff from the shelf. You can see now, how much dust was hiding under my treasures.

Secondly, get your cloth or tea towel (or muppet hand) and wipe the shelf down.

While your things are down from the shelf, you could probably use this opportunity to give them a dust too.

Those toy cars haven’t moved in nearly two years, so they needed a little care as well.

To finish, place your things back on the shelf. I gave my things a bit of a tidy while I was at it. I took that photo down so I remember to find a frame to put it in.

See, I told you it was easy. Now do it with all of the shelves in your house. I hope you have fewer than I do.

Questions to ask your child: How would you describe the mood of the cat on Jason’s shelf?

Where do you think Jason is in that photo?
