Hello English II Students! As you know, the district has asked us to give you the opportunity to earn up to 5 extra points on your overall third quarter grade. I think this is an excellent idea and I’m looking forward to reviewing all of your hard work! I have sent out several extension activities already. Please continue to work on those, seeing as they have no due date. This assignment, however, must be turned in by May 11 th in order for you to receive credit. When it is finished, please send your work via email to [email protected] . I would prefer that you download a copy of the assignment and type your answers directly in the word document itself, but you could also handwrite you work, take a picture of it, and send me that in the email. Please title the message with your whole name and the words Extra Credit Activity. Late work will not be accepted. On our Google Classroom (please check your email for how to join if you have not already), I asked you what subjects you would be interested in learning about. For this particular assignment, I chose four: Covid-19, Mythology, Study Skills, and Writing Skills. So here’s how it works. You will read an article about Covid-19 and the story on Pandora’s Box. Along the way you will answer text dependent questions, multiple choice questions, and practice some of the study skills outlined in the article below, “10 Good Study Habits to Help Your Child Succeed in the New School Year”. Finally, you will have a short writing assignment in which you compare Covid-19 and Pandora’s Box. In all, there are seven assignments to complete.

This assignment, however, must be turned in by May 11th in order for you to receive credit. When it is finished, please send your work via email to [email protected].

They are the sections of the packet that have red lettering.

I tried to make the directions for these assignments frequent and specific, but if you have any questions, please reach out to me via email at [email protected]. I do not have the logistics worked out yet, but I am also planning to host a live virtual learning session where we review the texts and I answer any of your questions. I will send those details in a future email.

Lastly, this extra credit work will earn you either 3, 4, or 5 extra points. The rubric for the assignment is below:

3 Points The work is 50% complete or less and/or less the 50% of the directions for each assignment are followed correctly. For example, when the directions ask you to restate and answer the question, you do not used the question in your answer or the response you’ve given is basic or incomplete. Or, if you are asked to write three sentences and provide evidence, you only write one sentence or you do not provide sufficient evidence.

4 Points The work is 75% complete or less and/or less the 75% of the directions for each assignment are followed correctly. For example, when the directions ask you to restate and answer the question, you do not used the question in your answer or the response you’ve given is basic or incomplete. Or, if you are asked to write three sentences and provide evidence, you only write two sentences or you do not provide sufficient evidence.

Page 2: schools.scsk12.org€¦  · Web viewI would prefer that you download a copy of the assignment and type your answers directly in the word document itself, but you could also handwrite

5 Points The work is fully completed and 100% of the directions for each assignment were followed. For example, when the directions ask you to restate and answer the question, I can see the question used in your answer and the response you’ve given is thoughtful and comprehensive. Or, if you are asked to write three sentences and provide evidence, you do so.

Again, if you need help, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Best,Ms. Hamilton

Activity 1: Building good study habits

Directions: Read the article below.

10 Good Study Habits to Help Your Child Succeed in the New School Year

BY SYLVAN LEARNING

1. Get Organized. Between homework, tests, and extracurricular activities, it’s all too easy for things to slip through the cracks. A planner can help your child keep everything organized. Students should write down assignments, appointments and to-do lists, then review items in the planner at both the beginning and end of the day to stay on track.2. Know the Expectations. Students shouldn’t have any surprises when it comes to how and what they will be graded on. By middle school and high school, most teachers will provide a course outline or syllabus, which can serve as a guide for the semester. If expectations aren’t clear, don’t wait until a bad report card comes in the mail. Your student should feel comfortable approaching teachers with questions about grading and assignments at any time. If this is not the case, it may be time for you as a parent to step in.3. Designate a Study Area. Yes, studying at the local coffee shop may seem like a good idea, but not if there are constantly people interrupting or other disruptions. Even at home, studying in front of the TV won’t be the best use of your son or daughter’s time. Help your child by providing a quiet, well-lit, low-traffic space for study time. Take it one step further and institute a “communications blackout” policy with no cell phones or social media allowed until schoolwork is done.4. Develop a Study Plan. First things first: students need to know when a test will take place, the types of questions that will be included and the topics that will be covered. From there, your student should create a study plan and allow ample time to prepare – there’s nothing worse than cramming the night before an exam. You can help by buying a wall calendar and asking him or her to assign topics and tasks for each day leading up to a due date or exam. Setting goals for each session is also key to success. If your child needs some help developing a study plan, our study skills program is a great resource! Our tutors will work with your child to develop an individualized plan that fits his or her needs, while instilling effective time management tips and organizational skills.5. Think Positively. Being in the right mindset can make all the difference. Encourage your child to think positively when studying or heading into an exam and by all means, avoid catastrophic thinking. Help your student turn negative statements like, “I’ll never have enough time to get a good grade on this exam,” into positive ones like, “I began preparing later than I should have but I put together a comprehensive study plan and will be able to get through the material prior to the exam.”6. Create a Study Group. Working in groups can help students when they’re struggling to understand a concept and can enable them to complete assignments more quickly than when working alone. Keep groups small and structured to ensure the maximum benefit to participants and reduce distractions.7. Practice Active Listening. It’s important for students to concentrate and avoid distractions when an instructor is presenting. Some tips to share with your child include: try concentrating on

Page 4: schools.scsk12.org€¦  · Web viewI would prefer that you download a copy of the assignment and type your answers directly in the word document itself, but you could also handwrite

the main points being made, think about what the speaker is saying and pay attention to how things are said (gestures, tone of voice, etc.). They should avoid talking or thinking about problems when listening. If a teacher says, “This is important” or “I’ll write this on the board,” there’s a good chance students will see the concept on an exam.8. Review Test-Taking Strategies. It is normal for your son or daughter to feel stressed when taking an exam. However, there are certain strategies that will help him or her manage the stress and do his or her best on the exam. First, make sure that your child arrives on time and tries to stay relaxed. Students should be sure to read all of the directions on the exam and pace themselves so as not to feel rushed. You can let your child know that it’s OK to skip around on a test, if allowed, as he or she may be more comfortable with certain topics than others.9. Read Actively. It’s all too easy for students to skim over an assigned book chapter and not know the main points of what they just read. Help your student to practice active reading by asking him or her to note the main idea of each passage and look up unfamiliar words or concepts. Make an outline of the chapter or create flow charts and diagrams that help map out the concept at hand. After each section, have students write a summary in their own words and come up with possible exam questions.10. Look to the Future. For some students, college may seem like an intangible event in the very distant future, but in reality, it isn’t so far off. Starting early can be an immense help in navigating the college admissions process. Be sure to get organized, set goals with your child and have regular check-ins to assess progress.

Assignment 1: Before you begin the extra credit assignment, complete study skills 2, 3, and 4.

Study Skill 2: Know the ExpectationsDirections matter in any assignment, but in this one they are particularly important. In order to get five (5) points instead of three (3), you must follow the directions of each assignment with 75% accuracy or better. So, before you begin working, go through and read the directions for each assignment. Underline what you need to do. I will be looking for this. It is part of your grade.

Study Skill 3: Designate a Study Area

Activity 2: Learn about Flattening the Curve

Directions: Read the article below. Then answer the multiple choice questions.

Assignment 2: Practice Study Skill 9, Read Actively. As you read through the article below, underline all of the authors claims and circle the evidence that supports those claims.

Why everything is closing for coronavirus: It’s called "flattening the curve"

South by Southwest (SXSW) is a huge music/film/tech/education festival that brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to Austin, Texas, every March. When organizers canceled the festival it was only a matter of time before the other dominoes began falling.

As of March 13, many sports leagues have suspended their seasons. The National Basketball Association (NBA), National Hockey League (NHL) and Major League Soccer have suspended play. Major League Baseball (MLB) has pushed back the season start. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) canceled March Madness. Several universities have canceled spring football games, the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour canceled the Players Championship and the future of the 2020 Summer Olympics is in doubt. And that's just sports.

From Schools And Festivals To Trade Shows And BroadwaySchool districts from Seattle, Washington, to Baltimore, Maryland —including the entire states of Maryland, Michigan and Ohio — have closed schools. And more than 100 colleges and universities have canceled all in-person classes and moved online. The huge music festival Coachella has been postponed, along with a long list of concerts and music tours, the video game industry's largest trade show and all Broadway shows through April 12. Movie theaters may be next.

Even Walt Disney World and Disneyland — in fact, all Disney parks — have closed their gates. For Disneyland, it's only the park's third closure in its history, following U.S. President John F. Kennedy's assassination and 9/11. Terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, hit the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

Economic ImplicationsThe economic implications of all these closures are incalculably high. SXSW getting canceled means a loss of more than $350 million, including thousands of low-income workers' lost tips and wages. And that won't hold a candle to the losses from professional sports and theme park cancellations. So the decision to suspend seasons, cancel events and close up shop are not being made lightly.

And yet … there have only been about 1,660 cases of COVID-19 (short for coronavirus disease 2019) diagnosed, and fewer than 50 deaths in the United States. The coronavirus is a flu-like illness that began in China and has been spreading across the globe since December 2019.

As you've probably heard too many times by now, every year the flu sickens millions — nearly

Page 7: schools.scsk12.org€¦  · Web viewI would prefer that you download a copy of the assignment and type your answers directly in the word document itself, but you could also handwrite

50 million this year — and kills tens of thousands, perhaps as many as 52,000 this season alone.

What gives? Why so many extraordinary cancellations for the coronavirus, whose costs will tally into the billions, for so few cases?

Preventing A Surge Through Mass ClosingsThere's a good reason to "cancel everything." All these decisions by public officials and businesses are aimed at one goal: slowing down the spread of the virus to avoid overburdening a health care system that doesn't have the infrastructure to handle a sudden surge of tens of thousands of cases at once. Without mass closings, that surge is exactly what will happen, just as it has in Italy.

It's called "flattening the curve." And that's exactly what it is when you see it visually.

Image 2. What it means to "flatten the curve." The peak on the left represents the number of COVID-19 cases if no protective measures are taken, such as hand washing and social distancing. Protective measures can reduce how fast the virus spreads over time, hopefully preventing hospitals from becoming overburdened. The capacity of the health care system can change depending on the amount of resources and health care professionals available. Graph: Max Roser/Our World in Data. Modified by Newsela staff.

Epidemiologists study diseases and how they spread. They can somewhat predict how many cases of a disease are going to occur based on how the disease is behaving. Continuing business-as-usual allows cases to escalate rapidly in just a few weeks, spiking so high at once that they completely overwhelm hospitals. In such a scenario — such as Italy is facing now — more deaths are likely because there simply aren't enough hospital beds, enough face masks, enough IV bags, even enough healthy doctors and nurses to care for everyone at once.

Page 8: schools.scsk12.org€¦  · Web viewI would prefer that you download a copy of the assignment and type your answers directly in the word document itself, but you could also handwrite

Avoid Exceeding Capacity Of Health Care SystemHowever, if that same number of cases can be stretched out over months, never quite exceeding the health care system's capacity, then people will get the care they need, more health care providers can avoid illness and burnout, and fewer people are likely to die — as South Korea has shown.

But are we really headed for that many cases?

Yes.

As former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Scott Gottlieb explained in a recent interview, the novel coronavirus — just declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization — is beyond containment. If it's not already in your community, it's coming soon. The only reason total U.S. cases aren't already skyrocketing is that coronavirus testing has been such a mess that too few people — just 77 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the whole week of March 8 — are being tested. You can't count cases you haven't identified yet.

But every indication is that the United States is on track to see the same exponential increase other countries are seeing, as scientist Mark Handley has been tracking on Twitter.

Meanwhile, as Aaron Carroll pointed out in the New York Times on March 12, the United States has only about 2.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people —less than the 3.2 in Italy and 4.3 in China. South Korea outperforms everyone with 12.3 hospital beds per 1,000 people. And that's total hospital beds, not the ones reserved for the sickest patients.

"It's estimated that we have about 45,000 intensive care unit beds in the United States," Carroll writes. "In a moderate outbreak, about 200,000 Americans would need one."

So what do we do to avert disaster? We have to flatten the curve. Fortunately, people are listening and the idea has caught on so well among armchair epidemiologists that the #flatteningthecurve and #FlattenTheCurve hashtags have trended several times on Twitter in recent days.

Clearly, public officials and businesses are heeding the warnings of public health officials, as evidenced by all the closings and cancellations. But to be effective, ordinary people need to do their part by avoiding as much as possible any crowds and places where large numbers of people congregate, such as movie theaters, malls and events that haven't been canceled.

THE STORY OF PROMETHEUS AND PANDORA'S BOXby James Baldwin

James Baldwin (1841-1925) was an educator and prolific children's book author who re-wrote many classic legends and myths for young readers. In almost every culture, there are myths and folktales that explain how the world got to be the way it is today and that ask important questions about the human condition. Greek mythology in particular has been read widely in the West and retold in sophisticated high poetry. In this version, however, James Baldwin adopts a more accessible tone, turning revered Greek Mythology into old Greek stories.

I. HOW FIRE WAS GIVEN TO MEN[1] In those old, old times, there lived two brothers who were not like other men, nor yet like those Mighty Ones who lived upon the mountain top. (1) They were the sons of one of those Titans (2) who had fought against Jupiter (3) and been sent in chains to the strong prison-house (4) of the Lower World.(5)

The name of the elder of these brothers was Prometheus, or Forethought; for he was always thinking of the future and making things ready for what might happen to-morrow, or next week, or next year, or it may be in a hundred years to come. The younger was called Epimetheus, or Afterthought; for he was always so busy thinking of yesterday, or last year, or a hundred years ago, that he had no care at all for what might come to pass after a while.

For some cause Jupiter had not sent these brothers to prison with the rest of the Titans.

Prometheus did not care to live amid the clouds on the mountain top. He was too busy for that. While the Mighty Folk were spending their time in idleness (6), drinking nectar and eating ambrosia(7),he was intent upon plans for making the world wiser and better than it had ever been before.

Page 12: schools.scsk12.org€¦  · Web viewI would prefer that you download a copy of the assignment and type your answers directly in the word document itself, but you could also handwrite

[5]He went out amongst men to live with them and help them; for his heart was filled with sadness when he found that they were no longer happy as they had been during the golden days when Saturn was king.(8) Ah, how very poor and wretched they were! He found them living in caves and in holes of the earth, shivering with the cold because there was no fire, dying of starvation, hunted by wild beasts and by one another-the most miserable of all living creatures.

“If they only had fire,” said Prometheus to himself, “they could at least warm themselves and cook their food; and after a while they could learn to make tools and build themselves houses. Without fire, they are worse off than the beasts.”

Text Dependent Question 1: What is Prometheus’ reason for mankind fire?

Then he went boldly to Jupiter and begged him to give fire to men, that so they might have a little comfort through the long, dreary months of winter.

“Not a spark will I give,” said Jupiter. “No, indeed! Why, if men had fire they might become strong and wise like ourselves, and after a while they would drive us out of our kingdom. Let them shiver with cold, and let them live like the beasts. It is best for them to be poor and ignorant, that so we Mighty Ones may thrive and be happy.”

Prometheus made no answer; but he had set his heart on helping mankind, and he did not give up. He turned away, and left Jupiter and his mighty company forever.

Text Dependent Question 2: How does Jupiter feel about Prometheus’ request? Cite evidence to support your answer.

As he was walking by the shore of the sea he found a reed, or, as some say, a tall stalk of fennel,(9)growing; and when he had broken it off he saw that its hollow center was filled with a dry, soft pith10 which would burn slowly and keep on fire a long time. He took the long stalk in his hands, and started with it towards the dwelling of the sun in the far east.

“Mankind shall have fire in spite of the tyrant (11) who sits on the mountain top,” he said.

He reached the place of the sun in the early morning just as the glowing, golden orb was rising from the earth and beginning his daily journey through the sky. He touched the end of the long reed to the flames, and the dry pith caught on fire and burned slowly. Then he turned and hastened (12) back to his own land, carrying with him the precious spark hidden in the hollow center of the plant.

He called some of the shivering men from their caves and built a fire for them, and showed them how to warm themselves by it and how to build other fires from the coals. Soon there was a cheerful blaze in every rude (13) home in the land, and men and women gathered round it and were warm and happy, and thankful to Prometheus for the wonderful gift which he had brought to them from the sun.

Text Dependent Question 3: Describe in detail how Prometheus brings fire to men.

It was not long until they learned to cook their food and so to eat like men instead of like beasts. They began at once to leave off their wild and savage habits; and instead of lurking in the dark places of the world, they came out into the open air and the bright sunlight, and were glad because life had been given to them.

Page 13: schools.scsk12.org€¦  · Web viewI would prefer that you download a copy of the assignment and type your answers directly in the word document itself, but you could also handwrite

[15] After that, Prometheus taught them, little by little, a thousand things. He showed them how to build houses of wood and stone, and how to tame sheep and cattle and make them useful, and how to plow and sow and reap,(14) and how to protect themselves from the storms of winter and the beasts of the woods. Then he showed them how to dig in the earth for copper and iron, and how to melt the ore, (15) and how to hammer it into shape and fashion from it the tools and weapons which they needed in peace and war; and when he saw how happy the world was becoming he cried out:

“A new Golden Age shall come, brighter and better by far than the old!”

Text Dependent Question 4: How did what Prometheus teach them change humanity?

II. HOW DISEASES AND CARES CAME AMONG MENThings might have gone on very happily indeed, and the Golden Age might really have come again, had it not been for Jupiter. But one day, when he chanced to look down upon the earth, he saw the fires burning, and the people living in houses, and the flocks feeding on the hills, and the grain ripening in the fields, and this made him very angry.

“Who has done all this?” he asked.

And some one answered, “Prometheus!”

[20]“What! That young Titan!” he cried. “Well, I will punish him in a way that will make him wish I had shut him up in the prison-house with his kinsfolk.(16) But as for those puny men, let them keep their fire. I will make them ten times more miserable than they were before they had it.”

Of course it would be easy enough to deal with Prometheus at any time, and so Jupiter was in no great haste about it. He made up his mind to distress mankind first; and he thought of a plan for doing it in a very strange, roundabout way.

Text Dependent Question 5: How does Jupiter’s reaction reveal about his character?

In the first place, he ordered his blacksmith Vulcan, whose forge(17) was in the crater of a burning mountain, to take a lump of clay which he gave him, and mold it into the form of a woman. Vulcan did as he was bidden; and when he had finished the image, he carried it up to Jupiter, who was sitting among the clouds with all the Mighty Folk around him. It was nothing but a mere lifeless body, but the great blacksmith had given it a form more perfect than that of any statue that has ever been made.

“Come now!” said Jupiter, “let us all give some goodly gift to this woman;” and he began by giving her life.

Then the others came in their turn, each with a gift for the marvelous creature. One gave her beauty; and another a pleasant voice; and another good manners; and another a kind heart; and another skill in many arts; and, lastly, someone gave her curiosity. Then they called her Pandora, which means the all-gifted, because she had received gifts from them all.

[25]Pandora was so beautiful and so wondrously gifted that no one could help loving her. When the Mighty Folk had admired her for a time, they gave her to Mercury, the light-footed; and he

Page 14: schools.scsk12.org€¦  · Web viewI would prefer that you download a copy of the assignment and type your answers directly in the word document itself, but you could also handwrite

led her down the mountain side to the place where Prometheus and his brother were living and toiling(18) for the good of mankind. He met Epimetheus first, and said to him:

“Epimetheus, here is a beautiful woman, whom Jupiter has sent to you to be your wife.”

Prometheus had often warned his brother to beware of any gift that Jupiter might send, for he knew that the mighty tyrant could not be trusted; but when Epimetheus saw Pandora, how lovely and wise she was, he forgot all warnings, and took her home to live with him and be his wife.

Pandora was very happy in her new home; and even Prometheus, when he saw her, was pleased with her loveliness. She had brought with her a golden casket,(19)which Jupiter had given her at parting, and which he had told her held many precious things; but wise Athena, the queen of the air, had warned her never, never to open it, nor look at the things inside.

Text Dependent Question 6: Predict) What will happen to Pandora’s golden casket?

“They must be jewels,” she said to herself; and then she thought of how they would add to her beauty if only she could wear them. “Why did Jupiter give them to me if I should never use them, nor so much as look at them?” she asked.

[30]The more she thought about the golden casket, the more curious she was to see what was in it; and every day she took it down from its shelf and felt of the lid, and tried to peer inside of it without opening it.

“Why should I care for what Athena told me?” she said at last. “She is not beautiful, and jewels would be of no use to her. I think that I will look at them, at any rate. Athena will never know. Nobody else will ever know.”

She opened the lid a very little, just to peep inside. All at once there was a whirring, rustling sound, and before she could shut it down again, out flew ten thousand strange creatures with death-like faces and gaunt (20) and dreadful forms, such as nobody in all the world had ever seen. They fluttered for a little while about the room, and then flew away to find dwelling-places wherever there were homes of men. They were diseases and cares; for up to that time mankind had not had any kind of sickness, nor felt any troubles of mind, nor worried about what the morrow might bring forth.

These creatures flew into every house, and, without any one seeing them, nestled down in the bosoms(2) of men and women and children, and put an end to all their joy; and ever since that day they have been flitting and creeping, unseen and unheard, over all the land, bringing pain and sorrow and death into every household.

If Pandora had not shut down the lid so quickly, things would have gone much worse. But she closed it just in time to keep the last of the evil creatures from getting out. The name of this creature was Foreboding, and although he was almost half out of the casket, Pandora pushed him back and shut the lid so tight that he could never escape. If he had gone out into the world, men would have known from childhood just what troubles were going to come to them every day of their lives, and they would never have had any joy or hope so long as they lived.

[35]And this was the way in which Jupiter sought to make mankind more miserable than they had been before Prometheus had befriended them.

Side note: What was in Pandora’s Box?

The list of items released from Pandora's box are a handful: illness, worry, crime, hate, envy... basically any bad thing you could think of. They flew out of the box like little bugs, and Pandora tried to shut it back up as quickly as she could. She did, according to some of the versions of her myth, manage to trap one important thing inside: hope.
