Math At Home Review & Practice! WEEK 4 Day 1 Fraction Stories (Source: mathlearningcenter.org ) Tess’s mother owns a pet supply store. The directions on the small cans of cat food say to feed a cat 1 can of food each day for every 4 pounds of body weight. Tess started to make a table to help people know how much of this food to give their cats every day. Finish the table. Value of a word! Vowels are worth $50 each, consonants are worth $40. Can you make a word worth exactly $200? $600? What is the value of your name?

WEEK 4

Day 1 Fraction Stories (Source: mathlearningcenter.org)Tess’s mother owns a pet supply store.

Ratio Tables (Source: mathlearningcenter.org)Maria is planning to make friendship bracelets to sell at the farmers’ market. Each bracelet costs $1.25 to make. Use the ratio table to show your strategy for finding the cost to make 19 bracelets.

Greater Than or Less Than: Write a greater than, less than or equal sign (<,>,=). Try to complete each number sentence without doing the calculations! Estimate OR Use mental math! Then check with a calculator to see if your mental math skills were accurate! (Source: Math Learning Centre)

Day 2 Rounding & Division: Round and then divide to estimate the Quotient (the answer).

Counting (Source: mathforlove.org)How many do you see? What did you count? How did you count them?

Sorting Quadrilaterals (Source: mathlearningcenter.org)A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with exactly 1 pair of parallel sides. Circle the 2 sides that are parallel to each other on each of the trapezoids below. Mark the 2 sides that are not parallel to each other with an x on each of the trapezoids below.

A parallelogram is any quadrilateral with 2 pairs of parallel sides. On each of the parallelograms below, circle 1 pair of parallel sides in blue. Circle the other pair of parallel sides in red.

Find all the trapezoids below. Color them orange. Find all the parallelograms below. Color them purple. When you finish, you should have 2 quadrilaterals that are not colored.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Why? “A square can also be called a ‘rectangle*.’” Definition of “rectangle:” A quadrilateral in which opposite sides are equal, and all interior angles are right angles.Get outside! Go on a quadrilateral* scavenger hunt, either indoors, outdoors, or both. Keep track of how many of each quadrilateral type you find: squares, rectangles, trapezoids, parallelograms. Which quadrilaterals are easier to find? Which ones are more difficult to find? Why do you think that is? *Quadrilateral: an enclosed shape with 4 sides & 4 vertices/corners.

CHALLENGE QUESTION:Round and Round (Source: https://brilliant.org/)

In a circle puzzle like the one below, dashed arrows mean to add and solid arrows mean to multiply. For example, the solution to the puzzle is a number whose sum is, 5 + 9, which is 14. The solution on the right is a number that, when multiplied by 6, gives us 12. By working backwards, we get a solution of 2.

Day 3 Walking Home (Source: https://brilliant.org/)Zara is finding her way home, but she wants to take a route that visits her neighborhood as much as possible. From any square on the map shown, she can move up, down, left, or right a square (not diagonally). She also wants to visit every empty square exactly once, entirely avoid the squares marked with "under construction" signs, and she wants her trip to end at her house. Is it possible for her to do this?

Visual Pattern (Source: visualpatterns.orgBelow is a pattern of mangoes in stages 1-3 below. Draw what you think stage 4 might look like. Label how many mangoes are in each stage. Could you show the pattern with a table?

Day 4 Coin Toss Challenge: Place a plastic bowl on the floor and stand 20 steps away. Toss a coin in the bowl and record how many times it lands inside it. Express this as a fraction. Repeat.

Screen Time Calculations: If you were allowed 6 hours of screen-time this week; how many minutes would that be? If that is all you had to do your school work in, how many minutes a day would you have (Monday-Friday)? How many 15-minute recesses would that equal?

Bella’s Picture (Source: mathlearningcenter.org)Bella is painting a picture of a house. Help Bella solve the following problems. Show your work using numbers, sketches, or words.

A. The door of Bella’s house is 49 millimeters by 24 millimeters. What is the area of the door?

A. One of the windows is 15 millimeters by 32 millimeters. Another window is 30 millimeters by 16 millimeters. Bella says the windows have the same area. Do you agree or disagree? Why?

B. The porch is 12 centimeters by 19 centimeters. What is the area of the porch?

Puzzle (Source: https://www.solvemoji.com/)What is the value of the last row?

Volume Challenge: Check in with your parents first and promise to clean up! Go into the kitchen and get a 1 CUP measuring cup. One cup is 250 milliliters. NEXT, get several different shaped containers. For example: cereal bowl, your lunch box, a vase, things from recycling, water bottles. The more varied and different the shapes are, the more interesting it will be.

Do this over the sink or outside so you can avoid getting water all over the floor.

Using your measuring cup, measure how much water each one holds. Do this with a family member! Make a prediction - then measure! If you have any BIG measuring tools you can do the reverse, fill the object and then pour it into the larger measuring tool to

see how much it holds. Use what you got and explore how the shape and size impacts the volume! Make a table and keep track!

Day 5 Would You Rather (Source: https://www.wouldyourathermath.com/)Whichever option you choose, justify your reasoning with mathematics.

Friday is GAMES DAY!A full sized copy of “Trash It” is located on Google Classroom in the Math Section for this week! You can also set your own gameboard by drawing these pictures. **Tip - you can put the page in a Binder sleeve and use washable markers to play the game several times! All you need is DICE! You could also cut up digits and put them in a bowl and mix them up! Get creative.
