Earth’s Water Cycle by Robin Nelson

Epic - Books for Kids (getepic.com)( Book for remote learners)

Today we will learn how it gets there by introducing the water cycle. We will show pictures of how it happens, and we will learn the water cycle song, act out the words such as evaporation (up) condensation (clouds) precipitation (down) Vocabulary: Water Cycle

Literacy Center:They will use books to identify words that begin with our special letter/ Cut and paste pictures of things that begin with the letters of the month

Dramatic Play: M-T Meteorologist: Invite children to pretend to give the weather forecast. Provide clothing for children to use to pretend they are meteorologists on TV, a large map, pictures of various types of weather, and weather charts for children to read. Invite children to look for “Ws” and other letters on the maps; help them read the weather maps and ask them questions about what they see. If desired, children can design and set up the meteorologist scene.

Math Center:

Create a paper umbrella. Supply small toy people and counting cards. Invite the children to select a card and place the corresponding number of toy people under the umbrella. Add one or take away one to review the beginning of adding and subtracting

Focus Question: What happens to water when it changes temperature?

Unit Water

Today we will focus on EVAPORATION. What happens to water when the sun is hot? Have the children come up with some predictions to create a chart. After the children say their ideas, I will explain to them that the sun is hot and when the water is outside the sun helps the water evaporate. This means it helps the water go away… But where does it go… It goes in the clouds.

We will read the book Clouds by Weather Wise.

Epic - Books for Kids (getepic.com) (Book for remote learners)

Vocabulary: Evaporation

Computer Center: Shapes AdventuresThe children will be able to identify the shapes and sort them by color. At home you can use any shape computer game available such as https://www.sesamestreet.org/games?id=25871

Math Center: Number of the week 12 Let’s create a number 12 and collage or draw twelve pictures on the number. At the bottom of your number try to write the

word Twelve Art Center: - Using small paper plates have students paint a yellow sun… Keep repeating the word evaporate-Materials Needed: small paper plate, yellow paint, tissue

paper for sun rays to glue around the edge of plate. Have the children write the word sun on a sentence strip at the end of activity to the best of their abilities.

Block Center: Ice Castles: Add pictures of ice castles to the Blocks/Construction Center. Invite children to refer to these pictures and build their own ice castles. Consider covering the blocks with white paper and adding clear plastic cups for children to use in their structures.

Writing Center: Practice name writing on strips of paper.

Literacy Center: sight word of the week puzzle Me

WednesdayDate: 1/13/21

Focus Question: What happens to water when it changes temperature?

Unit Water

Today we will focus on Condensation. We will read the book Cloudette By Tom Litchtenheld.

Dramatic Play Center W-F Boats: Add large cardboard boxes big enough for children to sit in and invite them to pretend the boxes are boats.

Block Center: Car Wash: Invite children to build car washes out of blocks. Discuss the role water plays in cleaning cars. Using blocks build a car wash. Add cars, water bucket, dish soap, sponges. The children can wash their cars. They can then use paper and markers to draw the car they washed and use the color-coded car chart to help them write the color name of the car. They can also write down the number of how many cars they washed.

(Book for remote learners) Epic - Books for Kids (getepic.com)What happened to Cloudette? (wait for the children’s responses) Explain water cycle again. Ask what happens to the water (liquid) when the sun is out? Where does the water go? INSIDE THE CLOUDS!! That’s what we call condensation. (Sponge experiment) (to provide a visual for the children to grasp the concept)

Sensory Center: Add items to a water bin and encourage students to find the items and sort by colorLiteracy Center:Hide the letter of the week on post it around the room and have children search for the letter. Once they find the letter have them say something that starts with the letter. Letter Cc.Art Center:Collage a Cloud: Have the children draw their own cloud shape and collage with cotton balls.Science Center: Rain cloud in a jar experiment: (sponge, blue food coloring, cup or jar, water) Raining sponge experiment: we will use a sponge, jar, water, and blue food coloring. We will see what happens to the sponge once we add water to it Place the sponge on top of the jar and watch it “rain”. Have the children draw a picture of what they see and add the word rain and cloud for them to add to their drawing.

ThursdayDate: 1/14/21Focus Question: What happens to water when it changes

Unit WaterToday we will focus on the last part of the water cycle Precipitation. We will read the book Rain by weather wise.

Writing Center: Create or trace rain drops and have students cut them out.

Block Center: Block Letters: Provide the children’s name cards and invite them to use blocks to make letters in

their names. Talk with them about the lines in each letter of their name (straight, curved, etc.) and the sounds the letters make, specifically the first letter.

Art Center: Rain clouds: The children will create their own rain cloud using paper and crayons. The children will be able to cut their own clouds and collage them with blue tissue paper. At home you can draw your own rain cloud with paper and crayons.

Math Center: We will introduce our addition number sentences and have children use the bear counters, provide the children with pre-made number sentence boxes and have the children separate the bears in small groups count them and add them up. The children will then practice writing the number of what they counted.

Literacy Center: They will use books to identify words that begin with our special letter/ Cut and paste pictures of things that begin with the letters of the month. Letter Cc.

Page 7: hidecorg.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewInvite children to draw a sky scene (e.g., sun and clouds) on the outside of a small sealable plastic bag. Fill 1/6 of the bag with water

Sensory Center: Throughout the unit, vary the items in the water table. Observe how the children are using the materials to ensure that there are enough materials to keep children engaged without overwhelming their play. Consider a combination of funnels, colanders, buckets, plastic containers, pipettes, various sponges, ladles, whisks, basters and pumps from hand soap containers.

Dramatic Play Center W-F Boats: Add large cardboard boxes big enough for children to sit in and invite them to pretend the boxes are boats.

Focus Question:What happens to water when it changes temperature?

Unit Water

We will review the water cycle and further discuss what happens when water changes temperature. Review what happens to water when it gets heated by the sun. It evaporates. We will discuss snow and how it comes from clouds (connecting it to water cycle, when the temperature is very cold outside the water that evaporated up in the sky freezes and comes down as snow)

Let’s read the book Snow by weather wise.

Remote learners link to a book that is similar Epic - Books for Kids (getepic.com)

Class discussion on what we see in the book. Prepare pictures of snow/ice and snowflakes for the children to use

Writing Center: Practice writing the first letter in your name. Try using terms such as top to bottom, left to right to guide your child in writing at home.

Block Center: Block Letters: Provide the children’s name cards and invite them to use blocks to make letters in their names. Talk with them about the lines in each letter of their name (straight, curved, etc.) and the sounds the letters make, specifically the first letter.

Art Center: we will make a popsicle stick snowflake. Provide the children with popsicle sticks, glue, glitter, gems, and blue dot art.

in the centers as well.

Math Center: Let’s build a snowman; have the children build their own snowman. Discuss how many circles, squares, rectangles, they need to build their snowman and have them write the number of each next to a teacher provided sentence strip, with the shape words.

Science Center: Water Cycle: Invite children to draw a sky scene (e.g., sun and clouds) on the outside of a small sealable plastic bag. Fill 1/6 of the bag with water and seal. Hang in the window. Invite the children to predict what will happen. Let the bag hang for several days and observe. The water should evaporate into vapor then change back into a liquid as it cools, forming drops inside the bag. (What does the child notice about the changes occurring inside the bag? How do they connect this experiment to changes in the weather?)

Literacy Center: Create post its with the letter of the week Cc. and place them around the home. Have your child search for the letter each letter Cc they find have them say the letter and sound.Sensory Center: Add items to a water bin and encourage students to find the items and sort by color
