SPENDING MONEY

Q6.

IN A DEPARTMENT STORE

F2: Merci. La librairie est à côté du restaurant ?

M2:Oui, en face du rayon de musique.

Q7.

Q8.

A NEW MOBILE PHONE

Examiner's Report

Q1.

This question required the recognition of single lexical items, and was well done, although individual items of vocabulary caused problems. The vocabulary was also well known, although in part (iii) 'des baskets' was not known by some candidates, many incorrectly ticked answer E for this (pencil case).

Q2.

This question was accessible to the majority of candidates, although in part (ii)  'Il faut du dentifrice' was not known by some candidates.

Q3.

This question, targeted at grade E, was generally well done by candidates of this level and above. Answers B and I were the most accessible and answer C was the least well done, with many candidates failing to recognise 'Je télécharge aussi de la musique'. The most common incorrect answer was E 'on sweets' with candidates presumably failing to recognise the negation in 'je n'achète pas de bonbons'

Q6.

The questions that were intended to discriminate did so, and whereas better candidates scored well in the overlap questions targeted at grades D and C, weaker candidates found these more challenging. They required careful listening to the whole and proved difficult for weaker candidates who tend to tick answers based on the recognition of single lexical items, usually the first word that they hear and recognise. Candidates should be encouraged not to write when listening to the extract for the first time, but to listen to the whole extract.

The question was a multiple choice question and was well done by the better candidates. Part (iii) was the most accessible answer, but part (ii) proved surprisingly difficult, with candidates unable to understand 'Je choisis toujours le bleu, pour changer je vais prendre le violet', despite the clear choice stated at the end of the sentence. Part (iv) proved the hardest question with only the best candidates choosing the correct answer (b) the book department, from 'La librairie est à côté du restaurant?'.

Q7.

This question was intended to discriminate and did so, and whereas better candidates scored well in the overlap questions targeted at grades D and C, weaker candidates found these more daunting. The question required careful listening to the whole and proved difficult for weaker candidates who tended to tick answers based on the recognition of single lexical items; usually the first word that they heard and recognised.

Candidates should be encouraged not to write when listening to the extract for the first time, but to listen to the whole extract.

This question proved more accessible but interestingly the most common incorrect answers were 'likes B and C' and 'dislikes A and E' which might indicate that some candidates failed to identify the negation in 'sur le site web il n'est pas facile de trouver ce qu'on cherche' and were distracted in E by the reference to

parents and again failed to listen to the whole sentence, ('mes parents n'aiment pas ça mais c'est bien parce que je peux y aller le soir').

Q8.

The questions that were intended to discriminate did so, and whereas better candidates scored well in this overlap question targeted at grades D and C, weaker candidates found it more daunting. It required careful listening on the whole and proved difficult for weaker candidates who tend to tick answers based on the recognition of single lexical items, usually the first word that they hear and recognise. Candidates should be encouraged not to write when listening to the extract for the first time, but to listen to the whole extract.

This question was targeted at grade C and proved the most challenging. Many candidates failed to recognise common expressions to denote likes and dislikes e.g. in dislikes the most common incorrect answer was A which related to,'mais il est plus petit que mon vieux portable ce qui est bien' in the extract. Answer E (the price) was also quite common as a dislike, presumably because weaker candidateshoned in on the, 'c'est cher', in the sentence, 'Je ne sais pas si c'est cher parce que ce sont mes parents qui paient'. There were some candidates who wrote an answer in the blocked out box for this question and gave three dislikes instead of two. This meant that overall they had five answers rather than the required four as stated in the rubric.
