Home learning for Year: Six

Week Beginning: Monday 22nd June 2020

Spelling:

This week we would like you to investigate the Greek origin of root words. Have a look through the Spelling PowerPoint to discover where some of our words have come from. Use the notes section to help you understand any words that you do not know/understand.

Can you come up with any of your own examples? Create a table like the one below to add in your examples. Please focus on 8 different examples. For example:

auto

chron

dyna

mis / miso

mono

phil

phobia

pseudo

autograph

dynamite

Please ensure your examples are different to the ones in the PowerPoint. You may need to use the internet / dictionary to help you.

Once you have come up with some of your own examples, we would like you to create a poster, leaflet or mind map which demonstrates your understanding and informs the reader of the Greek origin of the different root words. Make sure you give clear examples and definitions to demonstrate your own understanding!

Challenge:

Why not have a go at another word wheel this week? How many words of three or more letters can you make, using the middle letter in each word?

Can you find a word that uses all the letters?

Reading:

This week’s reading task is a bit more challenging than you are probably used to. This has been sent through by one of the Secondary schools and we thought it might be quite nice for you to have a go at this week. We have split the reading into 2 tasks:

Task 1

This week we would like you to read an extract from the novel ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for peculiar Children’. Before reading the extract, please consider the following questions:

1. List all the things you can see.

2. What is strange about the picture?

3. What predictions can you make about the novel using the title and the front cover?

If you can, watch the trailer and add to your predictions. (There is a slightly scary bit at 2:13 so don’t watch this bit if you get scared easily!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV_IhWE4LP0

Once you have considered the first set of questions, please spend some time reading the extract from the prologue of the novel ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for peculiar Children’. This is quite a long extract, so you may want to spend a bit of time doing this! Please make sure you understand the text and are using the definitions of tricky words to apply meaning. You will find task 2 challenging if you don’t spend time understanding the text.

Task 2

Once you have read the text, please complete the attached activities. Read the questions carefully and make sure you are using the extract to support your answers.

Remember to continue to read at home. You can read alone, to parents or to anyone in your house!

English and Grammar:

Monday (Grammar)

This week for Grammar we would like you to revise the different sentence types: statement, command, exclamation, question.

Have a look at the following video (another MC Grammar) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loxepvEYkx8&list=PL-uNqb-v0V7PA1NV8AdPgj6ONpU2wjvIx&index=6 to revise the different sentence types.

Once you have looked through the video, please explore the attached PowerPoint which looks at some specific examples. This will lead you to your activity. Please pay particular attention to the punctuation. This is something you often missed out when we practised this.

Once you are ready, please work your way through the Grammar activity, which will allow you to apply your understanding of the different sentence types. Read the instructions carefully, so you understand what you need to do.

Tuesday (Plan)

This week for English, we would like you to focus on the theme ‘poetry’. We have decided that we would use the opportunity to focus on the poem, ‘Magic Box’ by Kit Wright. This is a poem you may recognise from previous year 6s and is usually used in the Year 6 leavers service.

With that in mind, we would like you to create your own versions of the poem, reflecting on your time at Queensway. What would you like to put in your box? Could you start from FS all the way to Year 6? Could you start from the beginning of the day to the end of the day?

Start by reading through the poem, we would like your poems to follow a similar structure, however it doesn’t have to be a box! It could be a treasure chest, or time capsule… Get creative!

Once you have read the poem, you need to spend some time planning it. Use the box up plan to help you develop your ideas and structure your poem.

Wednesday and Thursday (Write)

When you are ready and your poem is planned, it is time to write! You may wish to use the original poem to help structure your work, or the writing frame for support. Take your time with your poem, please do not rush it. Use the ideas from you planning and the writing frame to help you.

Don’t forget the non-negotiables!

Friday (Edit)

Please spend some time editing your work, using the editing poster below to help! This is the poster we have displayed in our classroom. Don’t worry if you don’t have access to a green paper. Choose a different colour if you can, or use the pen you have written in.

· Read backwards to check for spellings

· Spelling corrections are written 3 times under your writing

· Read forwards, does your writing make sense?

· Read forwards to check for punctuation and capital letters

· Read forwards – one final check

· Now start your self-assessment using the success criteria

Finally write your next step.

We would love to see your poems! Please post them to the blog or email the office who will forward them on to your class teachers. [email protected]

Maths:

This week we would like you to revisit some of the work we completed earlier on in the year, focusing on statistics (data handling). We would like you to focus on line graphs and pie charts, areas which are a bit more complicated to understand and use compared to other forms of graphs and charts. There are also some challenge cards, which will focus on other areas of data. These would be really good to have a go at!

Monday (Line Graphs)

Today we would like you to focus on reading and interpreting line graphs. Remember, line graphs are a graph that shows information that is connected in some way, such as change over time.

Please watch the following video which will recap what line graphs are/show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WkqfJBfXic

Once you are comfortable with line graphs, please have a go at completing Monday’s activities.

Tuesday (Line Graphs)

Today we would like you to continue your work on Line Graphs, however you will be constructing them today. This means that you will be given a set of data, which you will need to plot on a graph. Please consider your x and y axis. What is the data representing? Remember to label them!

Once you have constructed the Line Graph, please have a go at answering the questions. This will build on the skills you were using yesterday, when you were interpreting Line Graphs.

There are lots of activities for you to complete, depending on how much practise you need. Please make sure you have completed at least the first Line Graph.

Wednesday (Pie Charts)Today we are moving on to Pie Charts, which is another representation of data. Please watch the following video, which will talk you through Pie Charts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ruc9n6ho3l4

You may want to refer to your revision guide for further support.

Once you are ready, please have a go at solving Wednesday’s questions. There is a selection of pie charts, with questions focusing on different aspects. Read the questions carefully!

Thursday (Pie Charts)Today we would like you to continue looking at Pie Charts. Please recap the work you completed yesterday. You can always re-watch the video or use your revision guide to help you.

Once you are ready, please have a go at Thursday’s activities.

Friday (Problem Solving)

Today we would like you to have a go at applying some of what you have been practising this week. Please have a go at the investigation.

Challenge:Have a go at the challenge cards, which focuses on other representations of data.

PE/Active lesson:

This week for your PE sessions we would like you to have a go at some of the active videos on Go Noodle. We have decided to leave it flexible, so you can choose! Why not try a different activity/channel each day?

https://family.gonoodle.com

Make sure you get the family involved! Why not do it together?

PSHE:

This week for your topic, we would like you to spend some time reflecting on your journey at Queensway. What are your favourite memories of being at Primary School? What are you going to miss? Is there something that made you really laugh and brings a smile to your face when looking back?

We would love to hear your memories! Please write them down (however you would like) and share them with Mrs Bridges and Miss Hoffman. We would really like you to post them to the blog or email them to the school office - [email protected]

Please make sure you write down your memories, so they are nice and clear and something that everyone will understand.

French:

This week we thought we would give you an opportunity to build on and learn some new words in French, based on the topic ‘School and Hobbies’. Why not have a look through the link below, which has attached videos and activities for you to try. Get your parents involved and learn together!

10 top tips for staying safe on the internet

1)      Don’t post any personal information online – like your full name, email address, mobile number, etc.

2)      Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself.  Once you’ve put a picture of yourself online, most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.

3)      Keep your privacy settings as high as possible!

4)      Never give out your passwords.

5)      Don’t befriend people you don’t know.

6)      Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online.  Speak to your parent or carer about people suggesting you do.

7)      Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are.

8)      Think carefully about what you say before you post something online.

9)      Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude.

10)   If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.
