Lesson 6. The contribution human activity makes to the risk of drought&
The impacts of drought on ecosystem functioning
How do you think humans directly & indirectly help to cause drought?
Directly Indirectly
The effects of human activity - Deforestation
Use the causes of desertification from the PPT and add them into the correct part of the flow diagram on the next page

Drought in Australia
Using the text extract from Pearson (above) and pages 27 and 28 from the Hodder pages, summarize in bullet pointed form or spider diagram:

The ecological impact of droughts
The role of wetlands“an area of marsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt.”Perform a number of key functions:
• Act as temporary water stores within hydrological cycle. Therefore reduce the need to mitigate floods downstream. Additionally they protect again erosion and recharge aquifers
• Chemically they act as giant filters by trapping and recycling nutrients, as well as pollutants to maintain water quality.
• High biological productivity and support a diverse food web.• Provide a valuable source for human society as providers of resources (fish, fuelwood), of services in terms of
hydrology within hydrological cycle and act as carbon stores in the carbon cycle.
1. Explain how drought will impact wetlands – Use the following key terms in your response: precipitation, interception, infiltration, percolation, groundwater stores, evaporation__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. How are humans impacting wetlands? Discuss this with the person next to you and then produce a written response. You may bullet point.
