Let’s go caving!

Aim: Introduce students to the basic clothing and equipment needed to keep you safe in a cave.

Materials: In order to do this activity, you need to gather a few materials. These include:

A felt board (or a wooden board that you can attach Velcro to) 24 small plain cards, about the same size as playing cards Scissors Glue Velcro

You will also need access to a computer and printer.

Setup:

First you need to decide what pictures you want to include in your game. A full set of 24 pictures is included here, but these can be altered when you download the corresponding PowerPoint.

These pictures need to be printed, cut out and glued to plain cards (one card per picture).

Next, you need to stick a piece of Velcro to the back of each card. o If using a felt board, you only need to stick the prickly part to the cards as this

will attach to the felt on its own. o If using a plain wooden board (or something equivalent), you will need to

stick the prickly piece of Velcro to the back of the card and the soft, fluffy piece to the board.

You will now need a centrepiece for your gameo Here are a couple of examples of centrepieces you can use. Ideally you need

a picture of a person with their arms and legs held out.o These need to be printed out quite large (A3 size) so should be high quality

o Print your centrepiece, cut around it to remove excess paper and stick a few pieces of Velcro to the back to attach it to your board (or you can glue it straight onto your board)

o Finally, you need to print some arrows that point to different parts of your centrepiece. An example is shown here:

Once you have put together all your materials, your final game should look something like this:

Now you are ready to start your activity!

Objective: Working in small groups, the students will choose which of the items they need to safely take a trip underground! There are 8 items to find in total. Once chosen, the items must be placed on the board next to the arrows that point to where the item is used.
