Course Description

Homework/Classwork

Math homework will be assigned every night, including most Friday’s. It will be checked the following day it is assigned. Homework is how you practice the skills we are working on to check for full understanding as well as self-discovery. It is extremely important that homework is completed each night. Classwork assignments may also be included in your homework grade.

Make-up work/Late work

I will accept late assignments at 60% credit.

If you are absent you may make-up any assignments missed at full credit. Please remember it is your responsibility to turn in any make-up work to me to receive credit.

Assessments

A quiz/test that will count toward your grade average will be given mid-chapter as well as at the end of each chapter. These assessments will be given a time limit of one class period unless other wise stated by your teacher.

Midterm Exam and End of Course Exam

All Algebra honors students will be taking a midterm exam as well as an end of course of exam in order to receive a high school credit for the class.

Please be advised that the grade you receive in this course will be the first grade on your official high school transcripts. Any student who does maintain a letter grade of an A or B may be removed from Algebra 1 Honors and placed in an 8th grade level math class.

The midterm exam will count toward 15% of the student’s first semester grade, as required by the school district. Although I anticipate all students to be successful on this exam, a non-passing score may result in reconsidering appropriate math class placement. The end of course exam will determine if high school course credit will be received.

Please be advisedI will be assessing student progress in Algebra at weeks two, four, six, and eight of the first quarter. It is required that you are keeping up with our lessons and making every effort to succeed. If any students are struggling to keep up and/or not maintaining an A or B letter grade in class we will conference on strategies that you can implement to be successful. If after a two-week period you are still struggling it may be necessary to consider a change in math placement. Because this is the beginning of your high school transcripts and a high school level course, I want to make sure that every student is prepared to succeed at their highest level.

If at any time you are concerned about your progress in class, PLEASE feel free to come to me. I wan EVERY student to be successful in algebra. I BELIEVE IN YOU!!!!

Calculators

Please make sure that you have your calculator with you in class EVERYDAY. You will need your calculator for lessons, practice, and assessments. Calculators will not be provided in class. Because different calculator have different functions it is important that you get to know the workings of your own calculator.

Text BookOur textbook resource this year will be Algebra 1 by Prentice Hall as well as the accompanying workbook. Prentice Hall offers an excellent online textbook with the same text book and workbook material we will use in class as well as some EXCELLENT homework help, lesson instructional videos, extra practice, and much more! Passwords to access the site will be sent home during the first week of school and students will be required to access the site and join the roster for their class period.

eSemblerStudents and parents will need to enroll for the 2010-2011 school year for access to eSembler where student grades and attendance can be monitored. eSember can be accessed at the following link:

https://grades.pasco.k12.fl.us/

I do my best to make sure assignments and grades get entered in a timely manor, however please make sure to check with your child if there is a grade or assignment that has not been entered. They are the first line of communication between school and home! I will always post homework daily and assessment and project reminders in class. Please encourage your child to record these in their planner.

Class Website

Most of you are already familiar with the Edmodo website that the Voyagers used last year. For those of you unfamiliar, Edmodo is a secure site in which students can communicate with each other about school based issues and they can also keep updated on the latest assignments, readings, and projects associated with their classes. We will be using this site again this school year. More information will be sent home to parents.

Contact MePlease feel free to contact me with questions or concerns throughout the year by calling 352-524-8400 or emailing me at [email protected]. If you wish to schedule a parent-teacher conference, please contact Rachael Juarez at the number above.
