COVENANT CHURCH’S DNA

The soil in which Covenant Christian Preschool and Kindergarten is rootedCovenant’s Vision

Intentionally – Our journey together is purposeful and deliberate. Following Jesus – True life is only found in Jesus, and we choose daily to continue on

His path. Whenever. Wherever. However. As we surrender, He empowers us to make a world of difference.

Covenant’s Mission

Invite Friends Grow Disciples Send Ambassadors

Covenant’s Bedrock Beliefs

Almighty God – The loving Creator who offers a covenant relationship with all humankind: We believe in one God—the creator of all things—infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Jesus Christ – The reigning Savior who overcomes the sins of the world: We believe in Jesus Christ our Lord—Son of God—who was born of the virgin Mary, died on the cross and was physically resurrected; rescuing us from sin and providing us the only way to abundant and eternal life with God.

Holy Spirit – The empowering Presence of God who indwells believers: We believe in the Holy Spirit—the active presences of God—who sustains and helps disciples live as obedient followers of Christ. We affirm the fruit of the Spirit as Christ-like characteristics that are increasingly evident in maturing disciples. We also affirm gifts given by the Spirit that uniquely equip believers to minister with in the church and world.

The Holy Bible – The authoritative guide that reveals God’s plan for humanity: We believe the Scripture of the Old and New Testaments is the divinely inspired Word of God, completely trustworthy, the final and supreme authority, recorded with accuracy by authors who were inspired by God through His Spirit to perceive God’s truth.

Salvation – The gift of undeserved grace that is received by faith in Christ: We believe that humankind was created for a relationship with God, but separated from Him by sin.

Page 7: covenantpreschool.cc  · Web viewOnly through repentance, faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation are persons reconciled with God. The Church – The called community of Christ’s

Only through repentance, faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation are persons reconciled with God.

The Church – The called community of Christ’s followers that is commissioned to transform the world: We believe that the church—the community of God’s people—is called to love God first, invite all to salvation, equip disciples for urgent mission and work together as the hands and feet of Christ in the world.

Covenant’s Core Values

Worshipful LivingA dedication to passionate devotion and intentional obedience.

Jesus said that the Father is seeking those who worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. We must practice a life of worship that invites the presence of Jesus into all that we are and do.

Humble ServiceA calling to be generous towards God and other.

Jesus came to serve, not to be served. He modeled a servant life not only with His disciples, but also with societies lost, outcast and oppressed. Accordingly, we follow His example.

Authentic RelationshipsA commitment to respect and integrity.

Jesus relationships were honest and genuine. We too are compelled to relate honestly with those inside and outside the church. In so doing, we are refreshed and encouraged by our love for one another.

Loving CompassionA command to look beyond ourselves.

Jesus looked at broken humanity through the eyes of love and compassion and came to give His life away. We are called to see the world from God’s perspective and give ourselves away as messengers of salvation, hope and healing.

Empowering PeopleA process for equipping and sending Christ’s followers.

Jesus intentionally modeled, trained and empowered people to be disciple makers. He has given us His Holy Spirit and commissioned us to go to the ends of the earth. Accordingly, all of us as ordinary people are compelled to be prepared and empowered to accomplish a divine mission.

Ministering TogetherA strategy for accomplishing God’s plan on earth.

Page 8: covenantpreschool.cc  · Web viewOnly through repentance, faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation are persons reconciled with God. The Church – The called community of Christ’s

Jesus commissioned His followers in groups and teams as they went out with His authority to preach, teach, heal and care for those in need. We have been given different gifts and have been designed to work together for the fulfillment of the kingdom of God.

ENROLLMENT

Enrollment Discretion

All children are unique and come from varying family backgrounds; therefore, the Director of CCP&K reserves the right to enroll or not to enroll a child. The Director, in conjunction with the Director of Next Generation and/or Church Staff, will use discretion upon deciding if it is in the best interest of the potential student and of the school for a child to be enrolled.

Child/Teacher Ratios 2 year olds 10 to 2 3 year olds 14 to 2 4 year olds 16 to 2 Kindergarten 20 to 2

Each of our classrooms has a teacher and assistant.

Enrollment in One Class Per Year

Children at CCP&K preschool will only be allowed to enroll in one preschool class per year. This is to allow our school to be open to minister to children and families currently not involved in our school. It also preserves the integrity and excellence of our preschool programs; allowing children to experience our Bible-based curriculum as fresh and exciting each school year. CCP&K exists to teach children about the love of Jesus from a Biblical perspective as well as teach them in the academic realm. We are unable to provide full or part-time child care.

Behavior/Dismissal Policy

The Director of CCP&K reserves the right to dismiss a child from school if the behavior of the child or the parent (or guardian) is not in agreement with our school and church policies. Please see more information on page 9.

DAILY OPERATING PROCEDURES

Hours of Operation

Kindergarten 8:15-12:15 Preschool 9:00-12:00

All classes will begin promptly. We will open the doors for the Kindergarten at 8:10 and for Preschool at 8:50. Children will not be allowed into their classrooms until the doors to the school hallway are officially open. Please be considerate of the teacher’s preparation time.

Page 12: covenantpreschool.cc  · Web viewOnly through repentance, faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation are persons reconciled with God. The Church – The called community of Christ’s

Arrival and Departure

Two-year-old students must be walked to their classrooms by their parent or caregiver. You must use the Corey Road entrance. The carpool entrance is not to be used for two-year-old students. Pick up for two-year-old students will be in their classroom. Please follow the two-year-old teacher’s instructions for pick up.

All other students may be dropped off at the covered entrance on the playground side of the building. Vehicles will be loaded and unloaded from the curbside, please do not allow your child to exit from the driver’s side of the car and walk in front or behind the car. A staff member will be at the door to assist your child in/out of the car. To keep the carpool line moving, please do not get out of your car. If you need to talk to your child’s teacher, please park and come inside using the Corey Road entrance. The carpool line is not the place to confer with your child’s teacher.

Classes will dismiss to the lobby 5 to 10 minutes early. To be considerate of the teachers, we ask that you be on time picking up your child. If you are going to be late, please call the school office so we can notify your child and their teacher. Please understand that even if you call, late charges will still apply.

Late Departure

There is a $1.00 per child fee for every minute your child is left after their official dismissal time, due upon arrival or the next time your child comes to class. This fee should be paid in cash to the office. Late pick up fees will not be allowed to accumulate on a child’s tuition account. Please make sure that everyone who picks up your child knows of our policies, as you are still charged if someone else is late picking up your child.

Free Pass

We do understand that sometimes during the year you may run behind or there may be circumstances beyond your control. Therefore, we offer one “Free Pass” on our late pick up policy, per child, per school year. This pass may be given as long as your child is picked up by 12:15 Preschool or 12:30 Kindergarten. After these times, the full late pick up fee will apply. If you have more than one child in the preschool they will each be given one free pass. Once this pass has been used, each child will be charged the late fee.

CARPOOL SAFETY AND SECURITY PROCEDUREPreschoolers: Enter the parking lot from Corey Road and form a line from that entrance. Exit directly onto Fire Tower Road. Pull up in the covered area as far as possible.Kindergarteners: Please do not get into the carpool line until all preschoolers have been picked up and the teachers have given you the signal that preschool carpool is over. Enter from Fire Tower Road and begin the Kindergarten carpool line in the parking lot. There you will be able to tell when the preschool line is through.Color-Coded name sign: Please place the name sign you are given at orientation on the passenger side window. This will help the teachers as they learn which car goes with which child.

Carpool Parental Permission

We must be very strict about allowing children to ride home with someone other than their usual carpool. We must have a note from his/her parent giving permission for a child to ride home with someone else. We will make no exceptions, even for grandparents or friends. If we do not have a note, we will not allow the child to get in the car. Please prepare grandparents and other caregivers that if we do not recognize them, we will ask for ID to make certain they are the people to whom permission is given. If you forget to send a note, a phone call to the office is sufficient. However, if that is not received, we will not send the child home with someone else. This is for your child’s protection.

Important Parking Lot Safety

To keep our parking lot safe for the children please follow this safety information.

Only park in marked parking spaces Do not use the handicapped or special needs parking unless you truly need them Please observe your speed and direction arrows when entering and exiting the

parking lot If at all possible, please refrain from talking on your cell phone while driving in the

parking lot Be cautious, looking for children when backing up PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE CHILDREN UNATTENDED IN THE CAR!

Child Safety Seat

All children are required by law to be placed in a child safety seat. If a child safety seat is not with the child or in the vehicle at dismissal, by law, we cannot place the child in the vehicle. You will need to park and pick the child up.

Tuition is non-refundable and non-transferable under any circumstances.

A tuition envelope will be sent home in your child’s folder one week prior to the due date. Simply put your check or cash in the envelope and return it in your child’s folder. Since tuition is due by the 5th of each month please remember to pay by that date whether you have the envelope or not. Please place your child’s name on the memo line of your check. If mailing in your tuition send it to: Covenant Christian Preschool & Kindergarten, 4005 Corey Road, Winterville, NC 28590. You can also pay tuition for the entire year if you prefer. Tuition statements will be emailed to you monthly so please make sure we have a current email address on file.

Late Tuition Fee

To avoid late fees, the tuition MUST be received in the office by noon on the 5th of each month. If we are not in school on the 5th of the month payment is due prior to the 5th. After that time a late fee of $15.00 will be charged to your child’s account. The late fee is applied to each child you have attending CCP&K; it is per child not per family. If unusual financial circumstances should arise, please communicate with the Office Manager regarding paying by the 5th of the month.

It is absolutely necessary for us to collect our tuition and fees as they are due. CCP&K receives no federal or state funding and is not financially supported by the church. Families will not be

Page 15: covenantpreschool.cc  · Web viewOnly through repentance, faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation are persons reconciled with God. The Church – The called community of Christ’s

allowed to have their account fall in arrears for more than 60 days. Once your account exceeds the sixty day period students will not be allowed to attend class unless arrangements are made with the Office Manager to rectify the account. If account is not paid in full by May 1st your child will not be able to return to school.

Returned Check Fee

Accounts that have a check returned due to insufficient funds will have a $15.00 service charge placed on the account to cover the processing fees incurred. In the event we receive more than one returned check, tuition payments will need to be made in the form of cash or money order. The account must be brought current in 5 business days or your child will not be able to return to school.

Withdrawals

In the event you need to withdraw your child from our school you will need to submit a written notice at least one month prior to the student’s last day.

GENERAL POLICIES

Potty Trained

At CCP&K we ask that all children entering the 3 year old class be potty trained. All three year old parents will be asked to sign a potty training agreement at the start of the school year. Children may wear Pull Up’s to school, but they will not be changed during the school day. If your child has a bowel movement in the Pull Up, the first time this occurs the teacher will change it. If bowel movement in Pull Up’s becomes a daily occurrence the parents will be contacted and asked to change their child. If a parent is contacted daily a conference will be held with the Director to discuss further action including asking you to keep your child home until they are fully trained. We know accidents will happen, but our 3 year old rooms are not equipped with changing stations, and frequent accidents require one of the teachers to leave the class for extended periods of time.

Biting Policy

In even the best preschool settings, periodic outbreaks of biting occur among toddlers and two’s, and sometimes even among preschoolers. This is an unavoidable occurrence in groups of young children. This can be very frustrating and stressful for children, parents, and teachers.

Children bite for a variety of reasons: simple sensory exploration, panic, crowding, seeking to be noticed, or intense desire for a toy.

Policy:

Page 16: covenantpreschool.cc  · Web viewOnly through repentance, faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation are persons reconciled with God. The Church – The called community of Christ’s

The biter is immediately removed from the group with a firm NO. The bitten child is consoled and the bitten area washed with soap and water. If necessary, ice is applied to reduce any swelling or bruising. This biter will be talked to on a level that he/she can understand, and then redirected to a new activity. If necessary, the child will be removed and taken to the office to calm down for a few minutes.

A written incident report is placed in the office folder of both children involved and a copy is handed to the parents of all children involved when they are picked up that day. The name of the biting child is not released because it serves no useful purpose and can make an already difficult situation more difficult.

For a child who bites repeatedly, we will request a meeting with the parents to discuss an appropriate plan, including some or all of the following actions: a. sending the child home from school, b. a one-or-two day suspension from school

Only after we feel we have made every effort to make the program work for the biting child do we consider asking the family to withdraw the child.

Discipline

CCP&K understands the difference between childishness and foolishness. These children are young; however, they are old enough to learn to “listen with their eyes, ears, and heart” and to “obey with a happy heart.” Minor behavior issues will be handled by the teachers and assistants. Each child will have a daily form sent home stating behavior for the day. Each classroom teacher will explain the discipline system to be used for the year. We count on your support and reinforcement at home. Our discipline policy is explained below:

First Offenses/Minor Issues: time out in the classroom Repeated Offenses: sent to the Director’s office for time out and loving discussion Repeated Offenses/Major Issues: conference with the parent and Director intervention

If a particular behavior issue continues, a parent may be asked to come to the school to discipline the child. A parent may also be asked to keep a child home from school for several days. CCP&K reserves the right to dismiss a student when the staff and Director consider it necessary.

Our staff is NOT permitted to use any type of discipline that would include corporal punishment, humiliation, or verbal abuse.

What to Bring

Book Bags: This may seem like a minor thing, but it is so important!!! Each child needs to bring a book bag to school every day!!! The book bag serves as a communication unit between teacher and parent. Notes, announcements, artwork, come home in the book bag. The small ones for children are very cute; however, they are not practical for our purposes. Please purchase one that is regular size so all of the fun and precious artwork can get home without being wrinkled. Make sure the book bag is clearly labeled so the teacher can see it easily. All two-year-olds not potty trained will need to have diapers or pull-ups in their book bag.

Page 17: covenantpreschool.cc  · Web viewOnly through repentance, faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation are persons reconciled with God. The Church – The called community of Christ’s

Clothing: Your child should wear comfortable clothes to school. We will be doing lots of fun activities and would not want any special clothing to get soiled from painting, outdoor activities, etc. Please make sure that your child is able to get in and out of their clothes for going to the bathroom. In case of an accident (that usually happens with this age group) each child should bring a change of clothes including underpants, socks, shirt and pants. Please place the labeled items in a Ziploc bag. This bag will come home when the weather changes to be exchanged for seasonal clothes. Remember, our playground is filled with woodchips. Closed-toe shoes are best for preschool.

Snacks: Snacks will be provided each day in all classes except Kindergarten. Kindergarten students will need to bring a snack and drink in a lunch box to be eaten around mid-morning. This will get them ready for first grade when they will have lunch at school. If at any time you would like to provide a snack for the entire class, contact your child’s teacher in advance. Please do not send individual snacks unless there is a medical reason in which case the teacher should be notified. For class parties, please be aware that some children have food allergies. Therefore, please DO NOT SEND ANY NUT PRODUCTS TO SCHOOL.

Things from home: Please do not allow your child to bring any toys from home unless there is a special show-and-tell day. This will help maintain order in the classroom and insure a toy is not lost or destroyed. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Preschool is also a wonderful time to break away from security blankets and pacifiers. Your child’s teacher is a wonderful partner for you in this endeavor.

Daily Activities

Chapel: All children who attend school at CCP&K will have chapel once a week. The CCP&K Director will give the chapel message. Visual aids, songs and stories will be used to bring to life the stories of the Bible and the promises of God that we learn from those stories.

Music: All children who attend will have a music class each week. The Fours and Kindergarteners will perform a play at Christmas time.

Birthday Parties and Invitations

Children love to celebrate their birthdays at school and some of the teachers even celebrate “un-birthdays” for children with summer birthdays. If you would like to help your child celebrate their birthday at school please contact your child’s teacher and set up a convenient day and time to bring a simple snack to school. If you have a child in the two’s please do not send balloons as party favors, they do pose a choking hazard. If you will be having a birthday party outside of school and you would like to send invitations out in book bags, then all children in the class must be included. If it is an all-girl/boy party, you must have an invitation for each child. Teachers will not be able to send home invitations to only a select few.

Page 18: covenantpreschool.cc  · Web viewOnly through repentance, faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation are persons reconciled with God. The Church – The called community of Christ’s

Field Trips All three-year-old and older classes will take field trips throughout the year. We depend on our parents to help supervise and drive for these adventures. Pay close attention to your child’s communication folder for notices, permission slips and sign-ups. All three-year-olds must have an adult attend the field trip with them. If you cannot attend your child’s field trip you must find another person to go in your place. In the four-year-old class we need parents to go, but if you are unable, please find another parent in the class to be responsible for your child while on the field trip. This insures their safety while off campus. In the fours and Kindergarten you may have one trip a year that requires an adult for each child. Teachers will not be able to transport children in their personal vehicles.

Class Parties At CCP&K we do enjoy class parties and enjoy celebrating the changes of the seasons. Each teacher will have a sign-up sheet for parties that will take place during the school year. We ask that each parent sign up to help with at least one party during the school year. Please choose a date that is convenient and sign up. Remember that we are a Christian preschool when making your plans. The following should be considered:

FALL PARTY: We do not celebrate Halloween at school. We have a Fall Party to usher in fall. We stay away from the traditional ghost and goblin kind of parties. Please do not send anything scary or having to do with ghost, witches, etc. Pumpkins with happy faces are fine.

CHRISTMAS AND EASTER: We celebrate the birth and resurrection of Jesus Christ respectively during these holidays. We don’t question the tradition of Santa or the Easter Bunny, but we leave these traditions for each individual family to handle however they choose at home. Our focus at this school will be Jesus!

PLEASE REMEMBER NOT TO USE NUT PRODUCTS IN THE SNACK OR CRAFTS!

Party Guest: We love to have parent involvement so parents are welcome to attend parties, please remember this is not a requirement. We also love siblings and they are welcome, we just ask that if a sibling will be attending the class party, you provide a snack for the child since the parents helping with the party are providing for the class, not extras. Please keep a close watch on siblings during the party as it is the teacher’s responsibility to maintain a safe environment for the class. If you will be attending your child’s party we ask that you drop your child off at school at regular time and return for the party at the stated time. If you are parent preparing the party you may return 15 minutes before the stated party time.

Social Media and Class Events Social Media is a great way for your friends and family to keep up with your family, but please remember if you post pictures of a class event on social media, ask parent and teacher permission before posting pictures of them or the children. Some parents do not want their child’s picture

Page 19: covenantpreschool.cc  · Web viewOnly through repentance, faith and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation are persons reconciled with God. The Church – The called community of Christ’s

on the web and some teachers do not want to be included. Thank you for taking each parents protection into consideration.

If you ever question whether your child should come to school, ask yourself if you would want your healthy child near another child showing the symptoms that your child is experiencing. As a rule, when in doubt, don’t bring them to school.

Allergy/Asthma

Many children have allergies and /or asthma; some more severe than others. Please complete the allergy/asthma form if your child requires any medical attention due to allergies/asthma. This will allow our staff to be fully aware of any medical issues. All epipens, other allergy medications, or inhalers that are kept at school must be locked in a cabinet in your child’s classroom. These prescriptions must NOT be stored in book bags. Please discuss any health concerns with your child’s teacher and complete the allergy/asthma health form.

Sunscreen

Weather permitting each class will be outside on the playground for at least 20 minutes each day. If you would like for your child to have on sunscreen you will need to apply before school. CCP&K staff will not be able to apply sunscreen to your child.

Emergency Procedures

Throughout the school year CCP&K will conduct fire drills to make sure the children know what to do in case of an emergency. In the event that we are faced with a real emergency, the teachers will calmly lead the children to the parking lot on the playground side of the building. Once in the parking lot the teachers will make sure all children are accounted for. If anyone is missing, the teacher will immediately notify the Director. Once the children and staff are safely assembled at the designated point the staff will start to notify parents. Each teacher has been given a handbook instructing them on how to handle fire, tornado or severe weather.

Security Doors

The entrance to the preschool hallway is equipped with security doors. These doors are for the protection of the children and staff. The doors will be unlocked between 8:10 and 8:20 for the Kindergarten and 8:50 and 9:15 for the preschool. After 9:15, the doors will be locked. If you do not have your child in class by that time, please ring the doorbell on the doors so that you can come down the hall. Please try to be on time for school, the teachers do not want your child to miss any part of the day.

Parent Participation

Visitor Sign-In

CCP&K operates a “closed campus.” This simply means that no visitor may come to see any student without getting prior approval from the office. All parents or guests arriving during normal school hours to visit your child for a special snack or birthday must obtain a visitor’s pass from the office. If you will be picking your child up from school early, please stop by the office

and not your child’s classroom. The office will notify the teacher who will send your child to meet you at the office.

Please make sure to read through the handbook and comply with the program rules. Remember your child is watching you, be the example.

Be on time for school. Children do best when they can start a task and have plenty of time to finish it.

Practice preschool procedures at home. Make sure they help pick up their toys, help your child become social by doing some role-play, work on table manners at meal times and play dress up with your child, helping them with their clothing.

Keep all conversations about preschool positive. If a problem arises please do not discuss in front of your child. Schedule a conference with your child’s teacher or the director.

Key questions to ask your child at the end of the day: “Did you have a happy day or a sad day?”

“What did you do at circle time today?” “What centers did you play in today?” “Who did you play with?” “What was your Bible story today?” “What things start with the letter of the week?” “I had a banana for snack today. What did you eat?” Get to know your child’s classroom schedule then you will know the best kinds of questions to ask at the end of the day.
