Dear Church Family, This morning one of the posts in my Facebook feed was that statement about the church has never been closed, so it doesn't need to be reopened.  I've seen it before and have felt the truth of it every time.  But this morning I got to thinking of all the wonderful ways our church family has continued to be real and to be a blessing during this time.  I can't wait for the day when I can hug all of you, but we have continued to witness to each other and our community.  God is present in every season, and the church is wherever you are willing to open your eyes to see how he is working.  This is what I have seen over the past several months... - During Sunday School Zoom classes with our elementary children they have joyfully shared: their pets, their favorite toys, how the walls of their bedrooms are painted, the packages they received from their grandparents and their new sports equipment.  They have spun in chairs, laid on their beds, their living room floors, and on their backs with their feet in the air.  Children who are normally too shy to dance to music when we are together, have danced joyfully during Zoom meetings.  As our children have gathered from their own homes, we have gotten to know each other in ways we may not have otherwise had the opportunity too.-During our youth group Zoom meetings, among other things, we did a study on anxiety.  I wondered if being over Zoom would mean that the youth would be less likely to participate in the discussions.   In fact, it was the most open, honest conversations we have ever had.   The youth showed trust and vulnerability with each other, and the fact that we weren't in the building didn't keep them from supporting and encouraging each other as we discussed difficult things.- Our Virtual VBS was still an event for the whole community. We welcomed children from other churches in the area, and even had the blessing of including grandchildren from across the state!  We sang and danced and praised God together!- We have played together...Members from the ages of 8 to 80 have played charades, Mad Libs, Scattergories, done scavenger hunts...the list goes on.  We have continued to find ways to laugh together.-Our mission trip was cancelled, but service was not.  We have served at Christ's Table, mowed lawns, weeded flower beds, delivered meals, sent cards, made phone calls and welcomed neighbors.-We have blessed seniors as they graduated and again as they left for college, children, teachers and administrators as they returned to school, welcomed home those who have returned from serving our country, welcomed new babies to the world and comforted friends as they lost loved ones.-In our adult groups we have supported each other as we have grappled with the challenges of the day, like: loneliness, how to visit with family, what to do about school, the stress of changing employment situations, and even where we were able to find the Clorox Wipes!-We have worshiped in our living rooms, our dining room tables, our front porches, our backyards, and our parking lot. We have been reminded of the need to give thanks in all the places God has given us. As we put together plans for ministry this fall, it is sometimes discouraging to know that things will continue to look and be different for a while.  But this morning I am reminded to Be Still and know that God is working among us. The church is very much open. Blessings, Kim

Celebrate the Lord’s Supper with the World—October 4th

Over 80 years ago, on November 1, 1936, World-Wide Communion Day was born. In the winter of 1935, a group of ministers met to study the spiritual needs and possibilities of the church during the dark days of the Great Depression. In the Lord's Supper they saw a great opportunity to unite Christians in dedication to Christ. In 1937, the date of World-Wide Communion Sunday was changed to the first Sunday in October, where it has remained. The word 'wide' has since been dropped from the name, giving us the present observance of World Communion Sunday.

The day remains as it began: 'A great opportunity to unite the membership in dedication to the Lord Jesus Christ.' People from the four corners of the world gather to answer Christ's invitation, 'This do in remembrance of me.' Plan to join us in worship on October 4th as we gather around the Lord’s Table with the world.

Worship During the Month of October:During the month of October we will continue to offer worship online beginning at 8:30 a.m. each Sunday and invite folks to worship with us in our sanctuary (limited to 50 household units) at 8:30 a.m. Our 10:30 drive in service will be held in our parking lot on October 4th to celebrate World Communion Sunday and then on October 11th worshipers will have a choice to come into the fellowship hall for worship (limited to 50 household units) or continue to worship in our parking drive-in service with the worship service transmitted via your FM radio. We appreciate your patience while we work out the details of this move. We also offer our 1:00 p.m. Wednesday worship service in our sanctuary. If you have any questions about our services, please ask.

Attention Deacons! As we move our worship services back inside the building, we will need the help of our deacons. While we are still not passing the offering plates and communion trays, we do count on you to help distribute communion elements as people enter the sanctuary/fellowship hall and to help facilitate seating in a distanced manner. We will hold a deacon training session on Sunday, October 4th at 11:10 a.m. (following the drive-in service) in the fellowship hall to get instructions and let us know how you can serve. We hope you will join us. If you have any questions, call Philip Hunt.

150th Anniversary CelebrationAs we have announced in various ways the past few weeks, the big anniversary celebration that we had planned for October 18th has been moved to May 2. 2021. This is the week of our 151st Anniversary. We hope to be able to gather for a catered meal and celebration event on that date. In the meantime, we continue to make adjustments to our anniversary calendar as needed. We still may have a couple of guest speakers join us for worship this fall and we look forward to viewing the finished anniversary quilt in a few weeks. On September 27th we will bury the anniversary time capsule in the church courtyard immediately after the 10:30 drive-in service. The time capsule will include drawings from our children, a list of church members, some articles from our history, photographs, a bulletin from the service, a news article about COVID-19, a face mask, an anniversary t-shirt, etc. with instructions to open it in on the 175th anniversary of the congregation.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the McPherson family on the death of our long-time member Elsie. She died on September 7th.

Congratulations!Carson and Cody Chapman welcomed baby Coleman Vance on September 3rd. Carl (Sonny) and Connie Coleman are his proud grandparents.

We celebrate with Erin Remster and Ben Appleby and Lillian and Logan Appleby who “officially” became a family through adoption on September 24th. Our prayers continue with them all.

Thank You from the McPherson family Your prayers, calls, cards, and the lunch provided by the church after the service meant so much to our family. Thank you!

From Adalyn MoonI wanted to say thank you for the bible I got.

From Norma JardineAs my two youngest grandchildren left for college, I look back and remember how important our church family meant to them. I want to thank the pastor, associate pastor, elders, deacons, Sunday school teachers, youth leaders, mission trip leaders, committees, choir, staff, dedicated congregation, extended family, and of course their parents.“It does indeed take a church to raise a child.”

Men’s BreakfastThe men of the church have continued to gather for their monthly breakfast meetings via ZOOM. You are invited to join them on Saturday, October 17th at 8 a.m. Contact Cato Coleman (740-982-6991) for more information.

Anniversary Christmas Ornaments will be available for sale this fall. The Anniversary Committee arranged to have Christmas ornaments celebrating our 150th Anniversary made by Hartstone Pottery. They are round ceramic ornaments that have our anniversary dates and the chalice. (We tried to include a drawing of the church building, but it did not fit well.) They are for sale for $10 and would make great gifts. They are available from the church office.

Trunk or Treat—Sunday, October 25th

Plan to join us for our second annual Trunk or Treat Event that will be held from 4:30-6 p.m. on Sunday, October 25th in our church parking lot. Since many Halloween activities are not so safe during the pandemic, we want to treat the children to a little Halloween fun in a safe, distanced manner. This is your opportunity to get creative and decorate your trunk and dress up in costume and pass out treats to the children of our church and neighborhood. We are asking that everyone wears face masks and gloves to distribute wrapped treats. We will have gloves and masks available. We are hoping to reach approximately 100 trick or treaters. This was a fun event last year and we hope to make it an opportunity to have a little fun together again this year. Please let us know if you will participate. If you have any questions see Lori Buchanan, Philip Hunt or Dawn.

Attention MusiciansSince COVID 19 prevents us from singing as a choir, we are exploring some virtual choir experiences. Contact Susan Davis (740-221-1030) if interested.

The Z-Disciple OCTOBER 2020Board Meeting Highlights September 10, 2020

Zoom Meeting opened with prayer by Moderator Jason Kehrberg Committee reports were reviewed as submitted Return to worship guidelines have been sent to members in the September issue of the Z-Disciple. Finance Committee shared that our congregational giving has remained steady throughout 2020 despite

not being able to gather for worship as we would like. Thank you to the congregation for making it possible for ministry to continue.

We discussed Consecration Sunday and 2021 budget and the board decided that we would keep our 2021 budget the same as the 2020 budget. Will ask committee chairs to review the line items in their budget as many need adjusted because of spending needs to deal with COVID pandemic. This fall will be a time of thanksgiving for the blessings we know through faithful stewardship in our congregation, rather than a specific Consecration Sunday emphasis.

Susan Davis has asked to resume giving piano lessons following COVID protocol of masks, distance, sanitation, etc. She will use the chapel which provides more space and ventilation, increase time between lessons and decrease the number of lessons. Following discussion, the board granted approval.

Next meeting is scheduled for November 12 at 7:00 pm. Meeting closed with prayer.

Advent WorkshopThe little elves of the Christian Education Committee are already hard at work making sure that families will get to enjoy the fun of the Advent Workshop this year.  If we are not able to gather in the Fellowship Hall, families will have the opportunity to complete crafts in the safety of their own home and then join their church family for a devotion, activity and sharing of crafts in an optional Zoom meeting (similar to how VBS worked this summer).  There will be a lot more preparation involved for the committee, so registration will be required and is requested by October 18th.  If the church has your email address, you will be receiving a link to register via email in the month of October.  If you don’t receive an email, but want to participate, just call the church office and let us know!  We look forward to this opportunity to “Fill the Night with Music and Light” during our journey to Bethlehem. Hey, Grandparents!  Want to help your grandchildren connect to their faith while they are with you? Try enjoying one of these online experiences with them:- Listen to a Worship and Wonder story together, http://www.zvillefcc.com/worship/services-and-info/.- Watch one of our fun Sunday School videos together or join us for a Sunday School Zoom meeting. Videos and information- http://www.zvillefcc.com/children-and-youth/sunday-morning/sunday-school/ If you have any questions, let Kim know ([email protected], 740-221-1305).

The Christian Education Committee would like to lift in prayer all of those who continue to find new ways to educate our children, keep them safe and surround them in love.  As you uphold the children of our community, we uphold you in prayer and love.

Angel Tree Project:  First Christian Church has committed to supporting 40 Angels this Christmas through Prison Fellowship.  Outreach will contact local families of incarcerated parents identified through Prison Fellowship to learn needs/desires.  Once the Angel Tree is ready, church members can take an Angel and shop for that child ($10-15 total), wrap the gift and return it to church.  We will deliver those gifts, along with a personal message of love to the children on behalf of their parent in prison.  If you would like to shop for an Angel but cannot come to the church, we can mail you an Angel or call or email with the information, and an Outreach member can pick the gift(s) up from you.  Look for more information about this as we receive our Angel information in October/November.

Serving at Christ’s Table: We will serve next at Christ’s Table on Saturday, November 28.  If you can help, please contact Kris Hawk at (740) 624-0810.

Christ's Table Coordinators Needed:  We still need more coordinators for our service at Christ's Table.
