THE UNIVERSITY OF CAGLIARI AND ITS HISTORY

The Studium Generalis Kalaritanum was founded in 1606 along the lines of the old Spanish Universities of Salamanca, Valladolid and Lerida. It originally offered Law, Latin, Greek and Hebrew Literature, the Liberal Arts, Medicine, Surgery, Philosophy and Science. When Sardinia passed under the House of Savoy government in the 18th century, the statute of the University was significantly modified, with the expansion of the science faculties and institutes. Designed by the Piedmontese engineer Saverio Belgrano di Famolasco, the new University building was completed at the end of the 18th century. Today it hosts the Rectorate and the administrative offices. The 19th and 20th centuries saw more and more emphasis placed on research activities, with the achievement of important, internationally acclaimed results, especially in the fields of Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Archaeology. In the 20th century, problems arising from severe damage to University buildings during the Second World War had to be dealt with, and reconstruction is only just now approaching its final phase. At the end of the 1960s, plans were advanced for Anglo-Saxon types of residential university structures in a single body, based on an ambitious plan. Today, the great dream has come true a new University campus on the outskirts of town. The new campus is situated in Monserrato, on an area of 73 hectares. It hosts the science faculties, many departments with their respective faculties, and a University general hospital, adequately integrated with other medical institutions.
THE UNIVERSITY OF CAGLIARI AND ITS PRESENT STRUCTURE
At present the University has the following faculties: Architecture, Economics; Education Sciences; Engineering; Foreign Languages and Literature; Humanities; Law; Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences; Medicine and Surgery; Pharmacy; Political Sciences.The University has about 36.000 regularly enrolled students, a teaching staff of over 1300 and a technical-administrative staff of about 1200 people.At the moment the University of Cagliari is one of the largest enterprises in the Region of Sardinia, thanks to its international policy studies and its numerous agreements with prestigious universities in Europe and around the world.

New Academic Degrees and Qualifications
Recent Italian Government laws hve reformed the old three year degree (diploma universitario) and the old four year degree (laurea) and have introduced the following new academic qualifications organised in three cycles:

The Ministerial decree establishes a defined set of learning outcomes for each level of degree course.

Provides undergraduate students with adequate knowledge of general scientific principles and mastery of methods as well as specific professional skills.
Second degree courseCorso di Laurea Specialistica
Provides graduate students with advanced education and training for highly qualified professions in specific sectors.
Specialisation courseCorso di Specializzazione
Provides knowledge and skills for specific professions. Set up exclusively on the basis of specific national laws or EU directives (medical specialisations secondary school teacher education, legal professions).
Doctoral courseCorso di Dottorato di Ricerca
Provides postgraduates with training (including study periods abroad and training periods at public or private research bodies) for highly specialised research at universities as well as in the public and private sector.
First level Master’s Provides specialisation and continuing

THE ORGANISATION OF THE UNIVERSITY
The organisation of the University is assigned to the following academic authorities:
THE RECTOR, who legally represents the university. He presides over the Academic Senate and the Board of Directors; he supervises the functioning of the structures and services of the university. He is elected by the full professors of the University and stays in charge for three years. He may be re-elected.
THE ACADEMIC SENATE, which is a collective body that decides on scientific and teaching matters of general interest and advises on matters of a technical nature involving more than one faculty. It consists of the Rector, the Vice-Rector, the Administration Direction, the deans of the faculties and the delegates representing scientific area, technical administrative personnel and students.
THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, which is a decision-making body, supervises the financial, economic and patrimonial management of the University, as well as the technical-administrative personnel; in particular, it approves the university budget. It continues in office for three academic years and consists of the Rector, the Vice-Rector, the Registrar, a representative of the Sardinian Regional Administration, a representative of the “Banco di Sardegna”, representatives of full professors and associates, researchers, technical-administrative personnel and students. THE STUDENT COUNCIL, which is an independent body for co-ordination of students enrolled at the University having an advisory function regarding teaching activities and services, the right to study, training activities managed autonomously in the cultural, sports and leisure areas. It consists of the students' delegates in the governing Council, the Academic Council, the C.U.S., the E.R.S.U. and a student for each degree course.

The University achieves its institutional purposes, which are teaching and scientific research, through the faculties, the courses, the departments, the institutes and the service centres.The faculties are the structures by means of which the University organises its activities in the different cultural areas. They co-ordinate teaching activities and organise them in degree courses, university diplomas and other qualifications. They decide on the appointment and calling in of lecturers and determine the assignment of the duties and number of teaching hours of the permanent teaching staff and researchers, in conformity with the principles of freedom in teaching. The faculty is administered by the Faculty Council and the Dean.
THE DEPARTMENT is the structure of the University which brings together and organizes fields of research that are homogeneous in purpose and methods and decides on the subjects that are to be taught. It promotes and manages research and advisory activities, organizes PhD studies, performs external research activities on the basis of agreements and conventions. The department is administered by the Department Council and the Director.

For the implementation of teaching and research activities of common interest it is possible to agree upon methods for co-operation among different universities, and between these and public and private bodies, following the setting up of inter-university centres and consortia. To the perform research activities of particular importance, intradepartmental research teams may be formed.
ACADEMIC CALENDAR
The academic year starts on 1st October and ends on 30th September of each year. Lectures and Tutorials usually start during the first ten days of October and end during the first ten days of June. The following days and all Sundays are considered holidays:

GRADING SYSTEM, ASSESSMENT AND ACADEMIC RECOGNITION
Subject units are generally taught for two semesters. Final assessment of the student is based on the result of one or more examinations, which may be oral and/or written. The pass mark for examinations is 18 out of 30. The highest mark for examinations is 30 out of 30. An excellent performance is usually graded above 28.Lectures take place in university classrooms. Tutorials are usually held in university laboratories.Examinations are held in two ordinary sessions. The first is to be concluded in February; the second in June or July.When students have passed all the examinations in their plans of studies, they are required to prepare a thesis for discussion before a board of eleven professors.This board expresses a global assessment of the student's entire career and awards a final mark not lower than 66 out of 110. The highest mark is 110 out of 110 cum laude.

PART III. SOCRATES - ERASMUS ACTION
ERASMUS ACTION
ERASMUS ACTION belongs to the EC SOCRATES programme, which allows University students to study in prestigious European Universities for a period of three to twelve months.The University of Cagliari will give full credit for studies performed in the foreign country. The period of study can be for the following:- attendance of complete course units and sitting for examinations;- preparation of a thesis;- vocational training in firms abroad;- performance of activities that are part of research doctorate and postgraduate specialisation courses.Being an ERASMUS student means:- admission to university in another European country participating in the programme;- exemption from payment of fees at that university;- full academic recognition by the student's home university of studies successfully completed in foreign universities.ERASMUS exchanges can take place with European universities that have signed a bilateral agreement with the home university concerning the number of departing and arriving students in each area of study. Only students enrolled in at least the second academic year, in an official course of studies leading to the attainment of a diploma, a degree, a postgraduate specialisation or a research doctorate may participate in these academic exchanges.For some years now, management of SOCRATES/ERASMUS exchanges within Italian universities is in the hands of the International Mobility Office which operates in collaboration with all academic and administrative components of universities involved in the initiative.The International Mobility Office supplies all information concerning possibilities of participating, including consultation of brochures prepared by the prestigious European universities that have adhered to the SOCRATES programme and announcements of yearly competitions for the selection of future beneficiaries on the basis of clear and equitable criteria.

ECTS stands for "European Community Course Credit Transfer System". ECTS was a pilot project included in the ERASMUS Programme (European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students). One of the main aims of ERASMUS is the promotion of academic recognition throughout

the European Community in order to allow students to perform part of their study programme abroad.ECTS was introduced for a maximum 6-year pilot phase extending from academic year 1989/90 to academic year 1994/95. Five subject areas were selected to test ECTS mechanisms: Business Administration, Chemistry, History, Mechanical Engineering and Medicine. From academic year 1995/96, at the end of the pilot phase, the Faculty of Engineering - Degree in Electronic Engineering - of the University of Cagliari decided to utilise the system.ECTS is a decentralised system based upon the principle of mutual trust and confidence between the participating higher education institutions.ECTS rules, concerning information (on courses available), agreement (between the home and host institutions) and the use of credit points (to indicate student workload) are set out to reinforce this mutual trust and confidence. Each ECTS department will describe the courses it offers not only in terms of content but also by awarding credits to each course. ECTS is a credit system based on student workload. Student workload involves lectures, practice and self study. It includes all work needed to prepare for an examination.The basic allocation of academic credits is 60 credits per year of study or 30 credits per semester or 20 credits per quarter/term. It is important to note that no special courses may be set up for ECTS purposes, but that all ECTS courses must be mainstream courses of the participating institutions, as followed by home students under normal regulations.Depending on student workload in the courses offered, it is up to the participating institutions to subdivide the credits for the different courses. On-the-job training periods and optional courses which form an integral part of the course of study also receive academic credit. On-the-job training periods and optional courses which do not form an integral part of the course of study do not receive academic credit. Non-credit courses may, however, be mentioned in the transcript of records.Credits are awarded only when the course has been completed and all required examinations have been passed successfully. Students participating in Erasmus will receive full credit for all academic work successfully completed at any of the Erasmus partner institutions and they will be able to transfer these academic credits from one participating institution to another as long as there is prior agreement between the institutions involved.

Exchange students and enrolment at the University
Being an Erasmus student is not the only way to study at the University of Cagliari. If you are not eligible for Eramus/Socrates programme, you can either study at the University of Cagliari within the framework of international co-operation with the bilateral agreements. A detailed description of the university bilateral agreements, including students’ mobility, is found in the pages to follow. Alternatively, you may enrol for some single course.
Enrolment for single modules
The University of Cagliari allows those who intend to integrate their own university and professional curriculum with the attendance to single modules activated within the various University faculties and with the taking of the relative examinations;
AddressesIt is possible to register for single modules taken from first degrees programmes, second degrees "a ciclo unico" and previous degree courses (before the reform), for those who have: an upper-secondary school Diploma, a degree, a University Diploma;It is possible to register for single modules taken from second degree programmes for those who have: a first degree, a University Diploma, a second degree, a degree obtained with the previous programmes provided the student is not registered in any Italian University.It is possible to register for single modules as stated above: European and non-European citizens with legal permanent residence abroad; students and foreign graduates who attend the University of Cagliari on the basis of international mobility programmes or agreements regulated by conditions of reciprocity.Registration does not confer the university student status, but it gives the right to access to libraries, to workshops, to consultation with professors etc.

The maximum number of credits per each academic year is 36. Registration allows sitting for the relative examinations. The examinations must be taken within the academic year of registration; otherwise it is necessary to re-register the following academic year. It is allowed to register only for courses activated in the various faculties in the academic year of reference. Those who intend to register for single modules must pay a contribution of € 52.69 for each single module and € 105.39 for registration fees, besides the revenue stamp (€ 14.62).The registration form must be presented to the relative Admissions Offices (segreterie studenti), on forms available at the Admissions Offices, Informagiovani offices, or downloadable from the university website (www.unica.it /didattica).The registration to single courses taught in those degree programmes with a limited number of students is subject to acceptance from the relative Class Council (Consiglio di Classe); in which case the payment of the contribution must be made within 15 days from the communication of acceptance.
DeadlinesThe registration forms to single courses must be presented within the following dates:1° semester Courses - within 30 September 20062° semester Courses - within 28 February 2007The payment of fees must be made at any Banco di Sardegna counter at least two days after registration and not more than five days after the above mentioned deadlines.
CertificationThe passing of single courses gives the right to a certification from the University. The examinations of passed single courses can be used for the achievement of following qualifications, but cannot give right to shortening of degree courses.

ANTICIPATING YOUR STAY
In EU exchange programmes, most practical and academic matters are taken care of by the universities involved. You can usually receive general information on the host university from students who studied at the same University the year before. Ask ISMOKA or a student organisation for the names of the persons to contact. However, every student has specific wishes and needs that cannot be dealt with from abroad. Therefore, it might be a good idea to include a short visit to Cagliari in your holiday plans, once you are

certain of your grant (usually at the end of the academic year). This would give you the opportunity to explore the University and the town and to speak with representatives of ISMOKA.
ACADEMIC PREPARATION
The promoters of the project will inform you in good time of the necessary preparatory work. Since ERASMUS is an academic exchange programme, it is important for you to obtain information on your curriculum before your departure.The Erasmus programme guarantees academic recognition of study programmes abroad. However, to obtain such recognition, your study programme abroad will have to be approved by the Academic Board of your home university before departure.Minimal time will be spent sitting in classes and lectures, and assignments will be set for students to work on, either as individuals or as part of a team. Tutors will set a deadline for handing in the work, but it’s up to you to decide how to carry it out.Should any problems arise, get in touch with the International Mobility Office at the University of Cagliari (either directly, or through the officer at your home university) to find out what academic preparation is necessary. It is certainly advisable to do some reading beforehand, or to attend certain courses at your home university in the term preceding your departure.The University of Cagliari offers a large portfolio of full and part-time postgraduate/post–training courses within each of the Faculties. These are designed to enrich the potential for students to improve their professional expertise and achieve enhanced personal development, meeting the highest quality industrial and commercial demands.
LANGUAGE PREPARATION
To facilitate integration, it is advisable for foreign students to arrive at the chosen Italian University with a basic knowledge of the Italian language, since lectures, seminars and tutorials are held almost exclusively in Italian.In the months of October and March the University Language Centre organises two intensive, 60-hour Italian courses, with classroom lectures and extensive tutorials in its modern language laboratory. It confers 3 credits.These courses are indispensable for successful progress in your studies. Students planning to attend our University are thus kindly requested to let

ISMOKA know by 31 August for October or 31 December for March whether or not they wish to attend one of the two courses.The Italian Language Course costs approximately €60.
The University Language Centre is a Service Centre aimed at the teaching of foreign languages addressed to: University students, European programmes and international exchange students, students with scholarships, specialising students, contract workers, PhD students, university researchers, teachers and administrative personnel
The centre organises courses of: Arabic, Catalan, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Italian as a foreign language.
The courses are held by professional teachers, with priority to mothertongue, who use advanced technologies for the gradual development of skills (audio,video and computing materials, audio-active laboratory and a multimedia laboratory with self-learning facilities).The courses are organised in cycles and articulated on various levels:
Each courses is 50 hours of teaching and is characterized by diverse teaching modules:Intensive: 4 weeks – 12 hours a weekSemi-intensive: 8 weeks – 6 hours a weekExtensive: 12 weeks – 3 hours a week
For registration apply at the C.L.A. office (Segreteria del Centro Linguistico). At the end of each course the CLA issues a certificate of attendance and profit for students who have attended at least the 80% of the lessons and who have passed the final test, or a certificate of attendance for students who have attended at least the 80% of the lessons but have not passed or taken the final test.
The CLA organises and carries out tests to verify the level of language (French, English, Spanish and German) for students of community programmes from the university of Cagliari. The CLA also carries out research

studies in order to provide a theoretical support for constant updating and improvement of teaching activities. The CLA puts at the students’ disposal six hours a week in the laboratory for self-learning.

COMPUTING FACILITIES
The University provides a wide range of the latest computing facilities to meet your requirements. A large number of workstations are located in the Faculties. Cagliari’s local area network serves as a gateway to the internet and the world wide web. There is an extensive range of software available to you. In Villa Asquer (ISMOKA) students can access University websites and services free of charge. This includes online access to:
library catalogues and services (including resource availability);
faculty and department information (such as handbooks, etc.)
student administration (including course enrolments, fee payments, address changes, exam results, and other services)
e-learning resources (including web-based courses and discussions, etc.)
Specialist staff are on hand to provide you with help and guidance. A wide range of short intensive courses are organized to ensure that you get the most from the services.
ACCOMMODATION
The University of Cagliari, in collaboration with the Regional Agency for the Right to Education (ERSU - Ente Universitario per il Diritto allo Studio), provides accommodation for EU and extra-European scholarship holders at the local "Casa dello Studente" (University Student Halls).

Accommodation must be booked well in advance and applications must be clear, complete and presented as early as possible, since there is a limited number of places reserved for foreign students.Students should inform ISMOKA not later than 30 June concerning the exact date of their arrival and the length of their stay.Accommodation at the University Students Halls costs € 5.30 for a double room and € 3,90 for a triple. Students must give a deposit of € 17,80 at the beginning of their stay if they are going to stay less than six months and € 57.50 if they are going to stay longer. This money will be returned when the room is vacated in the same condition it was in at the beginning of the stay.Exchange students at the University of Cagliari are eligible for accommodation service on the same terms as Italian students as long as they:1) present documents concerning income equivalent to those required from Italian students;2) present a declaration indicating the equivalency of income to Italian levels based on international rating and issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the student's country. These declarations may also be issued by embassies and consulates in Italy.
Rooms are found and inspected by "Students Associations" and are of an acceptable standard. In the town centre the rent of a single room with bath and cooking facilities varies from €120,00 to €250,00 per month.
Other private accommodation can be found through newspapers (Il Baratto), estate agents, advertisements; some may be cheaper but the standard cannot be guaranteed. Unfortunately, it is not possible to reserve this type of accommodation before arrival in Cagliari.
N.B. All contracts are legally binding. Read them thoroughly and make sure you understand them before signing a housing contract.
CANTEEN SERVICE
There are different University refectories run by the Regional Agency for the Right to Education (ERSU) in Cagliari. Meals are served as follows: from Monday to Saturday; lunch from 12:30 to 2:00 pm; dinner from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The cost of a meal varies from €2,30 to €3,25. UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES
The University library was founded in 1792. It includes, among its most precious works 370 hand-written volumes, 700 manuscripts, 5000 autograph letters and a rich collection of works of the XVI and XVII centuries, particularly important for Spanish studies.The University Library is at 32, Via Università - Tel.: 0039 070 661021.Entrance is free from 8 am to 2 pm, from Monday to Saturday and on Thursday, Wednesday and Tuesday is opened till 18.30.All Faculties, Institutions and Departments of this University have their own libraries, where students can find all sorts of publications, books, reviews and microfilms on specific subjects. Information on opening times can be obtained from the respective Faculties, Institutions and Departments.
STUDENTS' ASSOCIATIONS
There are many students' international associations. Among these, the most important are AEGEE, ELSA, and GRISOU. You may also find students’ representatives within the faculties and central Administration ready to give you help and advice and who defend vigourously the interests of students. The tasks of the different associations are: - receiving foreign students on their arrival in town;- helping visiting students feel at home;- assisting foreign students in finding accommodation- giving advice on academic problems- organising social and cultural entertainments for students

All EU students in possession of the “European Health Insurance Card”, issued by their local health authorities before their departure, have the right to health coverage throughout Italy; non EU students must have an insurance certificate issued by their home university or an insurance company as proof that they are covered by some form of health insurance (at their arrival in Cagliari they can also choose to pay the sum of €150.00 in order to be covered by the Italian National Health Service).
THE REGIONAL AGENCY FOR THE RIGHT TO HIGHER EDUCATION – (ERSU)
It is the Regional Agency for the right to higher education which has the institutional task, of supporting capable and worthy students, though without means, for the achievement of the highest degrees of education. To this end, the ERSU provides different forms of assistance students registered at the University of Cagliari can have. ON YOUR ARRIVAL
REGISTRATION FOR ERASMUS STUDENTS
By statute, the International Mobility Office acts as the General Administration Office. This is the office a foreign student must contact on his/her arrival in Cagliari: ISMOKA – International student’s Mobility Office Karalis (Villa Asquer – incoming students’ office - Viale Ciusa, 93, tel.: 0039 070 504240; Fax: 0039 070 522810; email: [email protected]). It is the only office authorised to supply foreign students with all the necessary information and help. This office is responsible for documentation required for scholarships; it issues certificates, helps students find suitable accommodation, organises Italian language courses, and is the link between the academic tutor and the student.
When an EXCHANGE student arrives in Cagliari, he/she must submit the following documents to this office:
1. passport or identity card;
2. a certificate from his/her university stating that he/she has been awarded an exchange scholarship;
3. three passport-size photographs, which will be used for issuing a student's record book in which all courses taken during his/her stay at the University as exchange students will be recorded;

4. the “European Health Insurance card”, or an equivalent insurance policy covering the entire period of stay at the University of Cagliari.
All duly registered temporary students receive a “University of Cagliari fidelity card” valid for an evaluation of the quality of their stay here in the University and in town.
OFFICE FOR ERASMUS STUDENTS
The International Mobility Office is open to foreign students on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10.30 to 12.30.The person responsible for the office is the Rector's delegate for foreign relations, aided by administrative personnel. The person in charge is Mrs. Anna Maria Aloi, duly supported in international activities by her assistants: Laura Fosci (English, German, 8:00 am 1:00 pm), Stefania Melas (English, French, 8:00 am 1:00 pm) and Vanessa Carboni (English, Spanish, 8:00 am 1:00 pm).
CARD OF PERMANENCE
All students attending our University as foreign scholarship students are required to apply for a card of permanence from the Foreign Office of the police.To obtain this they must submit the following documents:- a valid identification document (identity card, or passport for students from non-EU countries);- 3 passport-size photographs;- a certificate from the University of Cagliari, issued on your arrival in town, stating that you are enrolled at the University as a foreign scholarship student.
LEAVING CAGLIARI
There are several matters to attend to, some well in advance, before you leave Cagliari.At least one month before leaving, you should find out if you have to end your housing contract. When moving out, there are special procedures you have to follow. Deposit will be refunded as specified by contract. The International Mobility Office will issue a transcript of examinations taken at the University of Cagliari upon request. Leave a forwarding address at the International Relations Office for any mail that may arrive after your departure.

COMMUNITY AND INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION
In the last ten years our University has assigned a higher priority to its policy of cooperating with universities throughout the world. In an time in which the globalization of markets and the information society have eliminated distances between continents, Cagliari’s university has been quick to grasp the importance of stipulating wide-reaching agreements to act as short-term catalysts for the availability of universities of other countries to co-operate in research and teaching through specifically designed exchange programmes in areas of mutual interest to be decided on from time to time.
In such an historical period particularly important for the political and economic strengthening, which is the objective of the European Union, the University of Cagliari has inaugurated a policy of expansion towards the countries of
Eastern Europe to take advantage of the opportunities offered to professors and researchers in sharing technical and scientific updating and contributing to cohesion in the different areas.In the same way, special attention has been dedicated to this period in relations with Mediterranean countries and those across the oceans, where the University comes into contact with realities that are both culturally and geographically distant from us (the United States of America, Latin America, the Chinese People’s Republic and Japan, just to mention a few).
The commitment to co-operation concerns study and research in disciplines of common interest; the universities involved are to organize exchanges of students, professors and researchers, seminars, courses, periods of training, round Tables and meetings, as well as the circulation of the relevant publications and scientific information.
These protocols are inspired by two principles:a) reciprocal support and transfer of know-how with world-wide universities b) strengthening of exchange programmes and the drawing up of projects in common with universities in more highly developed countries.
There are constitutive elements common to all these agreements: these can be summarized as follows:the commitment of representatives of the universities involved (in most cases the chancellor or president) to implement policies to promote study and research in areas of mutual interest;the formalization of a ‘Protocol of Intent’ in which the disciplines of major interest are identified;the duration of the agreements, mostly medium-term (three to five years), with the possibility of extending them as well as modifying their contents; normally, the parties grant each other the right to recede from the agreement without compromising projects already in progress;the identification of the person or persons responsible for implementation through specific agreements (called ‘additional agreements’ or ‘exchange programmes’) within the protocols of intent; normally the person or persons responsible are chosen from among the representatives of the project in the department in the area of studies that the protocol addresses;the object, which consists of the performance of research activities, teaching and exchanges of publications and information of a scientific and technical nature;the duties of the parties to the agreement, which consist of the specification of the costs that the universities must cover in starting the co-operation; normally, the ‘sending’ universities cover the travel expenses of their professors and students to the ‘receiving’ university, which covers the living costs and any compensation owed.

Stipulated in March 2000, it is a three-year agreement.
Uni.CA/ Université de Toulouse “Le Mirail”, France.A skeleton agreement for inter-university co-operation in teaching and research in the L.E.A.-Erasmus programmes. Other subjects of research may be added. Specific exchange programmes for professors are drawn up as well as plans for studies in common. Stipulated in April 2000, it is a three-year agreement.
Uni.CA/ Université de Pau et des Pays de l’adour, France.Agreement for international scientific co-operation mainly dealing with Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry. Stipulated in April 2002, it is a five-year agreement.
Uni.CA/Université de Mulhouse, FranceCo-operation agreement aiming at the exchange of professors, students and combined research activities and the exchange of scientific publications and information. Stipulated in December 1995, it is renewed each year.
Uni.CA/ Universitatea din Bucuresti, Romania.Agreement for co-operation signed in July 2002 for a three-year period. The signatories agree to promote co-operation in research and teaching as well as to favour scientific and cultural projects of mutual interest. For this purpose, the possibility of drawing up research projects on the basis of specific three-year agreements is foreseen. Also foreseen is the exchange of faculty members and researchers for the purpose of exporting research and consultancy and of training scientific personnel, organizing workshops, symposiums and addressing themes of common interest. It was thus agreed that the two universities would recognize each other’s academic diplomas. The parties to the agreement reserve the right to withdraw from the agreement by giving six months’ notice.

Uni.CA / “Gh’Asachi” Technical University of Iasi, Romania.Agreement for inter-university scientific co-operation which was signed in November 2000 for the purpose of cooperating in all programmes of mutual interest, with special emphasis on studies in the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering and industrial chemistry.These objectives are pursued through exchanges of professors and researchers, the planning of joint training programmes and the organization of missions, workshops, training periods and meetings. The two universities also deal with the finding of the necessary funding in proportion to their respective resources. The reaching of the aforementioned objectives is outlined in specific agreements that establish procedures in the search for funding, the content and duration of the programme and its continuation. Such agreements must be approved by the authorities of the two institutions and by government authorities. The universities designate, for each programme regulated in such a way, a person responsible in each university and commit themselves for a five-year period, which may be extended by mutual agreement. It is possible to terminate the agreement by giving six months notice.
UniCa/ University of Valencia, SpainThe agreement was signed in April 2004. The objective is the promotion of the improvement of teaching quality, of scientific research, of management planning, also through the increase in value of the university personnel and the joint participation to programmes of international co-operation, particularly community programmes. It is a three-year agreement.
Uni.CA/Universidad de Aveiro, PortugalThe agreement stipulated in 2001 has been renewed in January 2006 (until 2009) and includes a co-operation for a Research Dotorate Degree in Environmental Sciences.
PROTOCOLS WITH MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES
Uni.CA/Mohamed-Agdal V University, Rabat, MoroccoAgreement for scientific, cultural and training co-operation signed in June 2001. The persons responsible for implementing the agreement are the directors of the departments of Earth Sciences, but the possibility of bringing in departments competent in other fields of study and research is also expressly contemplated. For each activity specified in the protocol the drawing up of an agreement for its implementation is provided for. The agreement is for a three-year period and it is renewed in writing so long as the parties are capable of finding the necessary funds.

Uni.CA/Institut National du Patrimoine de Tunisi, TunisiaConvention for cultural co-operation first signed in 1993 concerning archaeological, historical and artistic sciences. It is still ongoing, with tacit renewals. It includes a co-operation in excavations of the site of Uthina and publication of the relevant findings. The programme was signed in October 2000 for a two-year period, renewable for the same duration.
PROTOCOLS WITH EASTERN COUNTRIES
Uni.CA/ University of International Business and Economy of Beijing (UIBE), Peking, ChinaConvention for co-operation signed in June 2001 with the purpose of promoting and developing an active contribution to the achievement of results of interest common to both universities through exchanges of professors, researchers and students and the creation of scientific research projects with emphasis on courses in Economic History, Political Economy, Business Law, Business Administration and Finance and Marketing. The disciplining of such projects is dealt with in agreements for implementation of the convention which provide with the possibility of establishing direct contacts between the faculties and departments of the two universities. The commitment of each university is to participate in teaching and research programmes in compliance with the rules and regulations in force in each country. Finally, each university engages to be punctual in following the timetable established for reporting on the stages in the development of research and teaching activities. The agreement is for two years and is renewable, with the faculty of making joint amendments and the obligation of obtaining the approval of the competent authorities.

A declaration of intent to facilitate the admission of qualified students from one university to the other for the purpose of enrolling in programmes for graduates of first and second level, as well as allowing participation by senior students. Also promoted are all academic activities leading to the development of the objectives of research, information-sharing and teaching. Implementation calls for a five-year additional agreement starting from February 2002. This additional agreement has established the number of two students, including graduates, to the partner university following a selection of candidates by the university sending the ones chosen on the basis of academic merit and aptitude in the disciplines offered by the host university.

Uni.CA/ Universidad de Santiago del Chile, ChileA skeleton agreement stipulated in January 2003 for a period of five years by means of which the partner universities engage to cooperate by implementing a policy of exchanges of human resources for participation in courses, seminars, training periods, summer schools, teaching modules and similar activities. Research and teaching activities as well as information-sharing are also provided for. Subjects concerning the departments of architecture of the two universities are considered as being of common and interest, but the possibility of devoting specific exchange programmes to other, disciplines is expressly contemplated.

Uni.Ca / Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, Argentina. A declaration of intent followed by a specific agreement between the humanistic faculties and in particular with the Departamento de Historia de Europa Moderna and the Dipartimento di Studi Storico-Geografici ed Artistici. Signed in January 2002, it is for the duration of five years, but the parties to the agreement have agreed that the programme is to remain in force until it has been completed.
Uni.CA/ Universidad de Morón, Buenos Aires, ArgentinaA skeleton agreement for co-operation in all activities held to be of mutual interest. The parties intend to begin consultations for the solution of their specific problems. It is a four-year agreement signed in December 1999.

Signed in June 2002, it is renewable every two years. It provides for exchanges of all information through publications and other means of communication. It is possible to implement courses leading to masters degrees and doctorates of research in places which from time to time appear the most suitable.

Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina BrazilStipulated in August 2004, this agreement foresees the implementation of study, research and exchange programmes, the contents of which will be specified each time through a specific agreement. It is included in the Programme of Territorial Partnership with the Italians Abroad (P.P.T.I.E.). The people responsible of this convention are Dr. Gianfranco Bottazzi and Dr. Franco Nurzia, respectively professors at the Economic and Social Research Department and of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Political Studies and Engineering. THE HISTORY OF CAGLIARI
Fifteen hundred years ago, the poet Claudian sang the praises of this city, which stretches its open arms out into its gulf. The great English novelist D. H. Lawrence described Cagliari as "a naked jewel of amber that unexpectedly opens, rose-like, in the depths of the wide bay".It is a sunny city, not only because its climate is one of the mildest in the Mediterranean, but also because its southern exposure gives it the appearance of a picture window overlooking the sea. The climate is sufficiently tempered by light breezes so as to offer good bathing from May to October. Francesco Alziator, one of Cagliari's best-known writers, spoke of: "Cagliari, the city of the sun, an enchanting blend of rock and colours, of trees and sparkling glass; these are the real colours that Cagliari, the city of the sun, unfolds and reveals to those who approach her from the sea".
The city is the political, administrative, economic and cultural centre of the Island. Cagliari, the capital of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, sums up its entire history, struggled over, with varying degrees of success, by Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Pisans, Aragonese and Savoyards. Inhabited ever since prehistoric times, as can be seen from remains of lake-dwellings found in the nearby lagoons, this town was the main object of all would-be conquerors. The city is of Phoenician-Punic origin (Karalis) and there are still some imposing Roman ruins to be seen today, such as the Amphitheatre, with a seating capacity of nearly twenty thousand.The construction dates back to the 2nd century. It is held to be one of the most important ruins left by Imperial Rome. We can still see the cavea, the trenches for wild beasts, underground passages and the imposing series of grandstands. Also quite interesting is the impressive Sepulchre of Attilia Pomptilla (1st century), commonly known as the "Viper's Grotto" because of the architectonic decorations on the pediment that show two serpents. Greek and Latin poetic inscriptions have been carved into the walls. You should also visit the House of the Roman poet Tigellius. The construction dates from the 2nd to the 1st century B.C. It is a series of ruins in an ancient city area dating from the imperial period. There are the remains of an atrium, a tablinum with a mosaic, columns and architectural details. Of archaeological importance are also the Roman ruins discovered inside the church of Sant'Agostino (Via Baylle).
Two high towers, the Tower of the Elephant and the Tower of San Pancrazio, designed by the Sardinian architect Giovanni Capula and built under Pisan rule at the beginning of the 14th century, give us a good example of Sardinian architecture during the Middle Ages. They enclose and protect the medieval

Castello quarter which dominates the city, surrounded by high ramparts. The medieval city consisted of a hamlet located much higher than the port (the quarters where fishermen lived stretched down towards the harbour). Nowadays this is the historic centre par excellence, where traces of the people who have inhabited it are most clearly preserved.The city has continued to develop at the foot of the Castello since medieval times, mostly as the result of the intense activity of its port and the busy network of commercial and political relations with the rest of the island. Today, with its 250 000 inhabitants and the close-knit fabric of urban centres surrounding it, Cagliari is a great Mediterranean City, bustling with life and activity.
Throughout the centuries, the port of Cagliari has represented the main gateway to Sardinia. An easy landing stage for merchants and conquerors, missionaries and visitors throughout the ages, it is today one of the key ports along western Mediterranean routes; a large new industrial port has recently been completed and has begun playing an important role in further enhancing the natural vocation of the city.Like every other town in Sardinia, Cagliari still preserves some characteristic folk traditions. The most important feast-day, celebrated every year on 1st May, is the feast in honour of Sant'Efisio. He was martyred under the Emperor Diocletian and is worshipped as the patron saint of the people of Cagliari. A festive procession, made up of groups of people from all over the island dressed in their local costumes, accompany the statue of the Saint through the streets. The procession of Sant'Efisio, organised following a precise ritual, is led by the Alternos, the city's representative, and by the miliziani (militiamen) in their typical red costumes. Placed on a coach, the saint's statue, enclosed within a glass case, is accompanied by ox carts, decorated and festooned with flowers, to a little chapel near the ruins of the Roman town of Nora where, according to tradition, he was beheaded.There are numerous museums in Cagliari which contain documents of its past civilisation, as well as many relics of ancient Sardinian history and prehistory.The most interesting of these is the Archaeological Museum with its relics of Nuragic, Phoenician-Punic and Roman civilisations. The exceptional collection of bronze statuettes from the Nuragic civilisation makes the museum one of great importance. It houses the most complete collection of findings of the early Sardinian Nuragic civilisation. Especially worth seeing is the rich collection of Phoenician-Punic objects made of gold and the collection of Roman glassware. An ultra-modern Citadel of Museums has been built within the body of the old Fortifications, inside the old Castello district. This recently-opened architectural complex combines many of the ancient structures of the fortifications, and especially of the Royal Arsenal, with modern, split-level buildings. A Far Eastern Collection is on permanent exhibition and,

occasionally, important works of art are exhibited. In future, the building will house all the city's museums and some University institutes.Paintings and objects d'art of great importance are also preserved in the fine Palazzo Comunale (Municipal Building) and in the Cathedral.
Every age and every domination has left its mark in this church, built between the 12th and the 13th centuries. Among the most interesting are: the pulpit carved by Mastro Guglielmo between 1159 and 1162 for the Cathedral of Pisa, the triptych by the Flemish painter Gerard David, left here by a Spanish soldier who had taken it during the sack of Rome; the cenotaph of Martino II of Aragon; the tombs of the princes of the House of Savoy.During the year, Cagliari plays host to a wide range of sports events: not only football, but also basketball, tennis, track and field, cycling, boxing and motor racing all provide events of great interest for fans. One of the most important structures for sailing - a sport that may be enjoyed all year round because of the mild climate - is the marina called Marina Piccola, at the beginning of Poetto, one of the finest beaches in Sardinia. Situated in the centre of the beautiful southern coast of the island, with Cape Teulada to the west at one end, and Villasimius to the east at the other, Cagliari is the ideal starting point for a series of excursions: either to discover the thousand little bays along the coast, or in search of the past, the most important remains of which are to be found at Nora, a Phoenician-Punic-Roman town 30 km to the west of Cagliari (on the coast), at the Isle of Sant'Antioco a Punic tophet and necropolis (the artefacts gathered from the digs are kept in the nearby "antiquarium"; worth visiting are the vast catacombs carved out of underground chambers from the Phoenician-Punic era beneath the Romanesque church of Sant'Antioco), at Fluminimaggiore, in the Antas Valley the remains of the imposing temple of Sid Addir Babai - Sardus Pater, built in the Roman period (3rd century) on a pre-existing place of worship which dated back to the Nuragic and subsequently to the Phoenician civilisations, the magnificent Nuragic constructions of Villanovaforru and Barumini, an imposing nuragic fortress 70 km to the north (in the hills).
ARRIVING IN CAGLIARI
Cagliari is easily reached by plane or boat. It is connected by daily flights to most of the main cities of mainland Italy and by several daily flights to Rome and Milan. During the summer months, connections are more frequent, with both scheduled and charter flights to European capital cities.Cagliari-Elmas airport is about 8 km from Cagliari city centre; a bus service run by "ARST" provides transportation to and from the airport every hour. The Alghero-Fertilia airport is about 6 km from Alghero city centre; a bus service run by "Logudoro Tour" provides transportation to Cagliari.

COST OF LIVING
The cost of living in town is not particularly high, but foreign students (who have the right to use accommodation and canteen services in University structures) should have at least €450.00 - €500.00 at their disposal per month.
Sports activities are promoted by C.U.S., the University Sports Centre. Every year it organises a wide range of team and individual sports (Inter-Faculty championship, Rector's Cup and other University Tournaments) open to all students.C.U.S. runs the following sports facilities:- two football grounds;- one hockey field;- two small football grounds;- four tennis courts (synthetic);- two basketball courts;- a running track;- an indoor gym;- a fencing room;- a rowing area.Sports activities are free of charge to all regularly enrolled students, upon presentation of a special card issued by the C.U.S. office at the Sa Duchessa football ground - Tel.: 070-283 816. Cagliari’s nightlife offers a wide range of entertainment, a great variety of bars, cafés, pubs, pizzerias, night clubs, cinemas and theatres. The lyrical theatre - www.teatroliricodicagliari.it – for example, inaugurated in 1993, offers a variety of events, like concerts, ballets, conferences and exhibitions throughout the year.In summertime, the bars along the beach of Poetto are very popular. You will find music until late at night and relax in a friendly atmosphere.

MUSEUMS AND MONUMENTS
Cagliari's most important artistic treasures are kept in two museum complexes in the town's Castello quarter. They are Cittadella dei Musei and Palazzo Belgrano.
Cittadella dei Musei houses four museums: the “Museo Archeologico Nazionale” (National Archaeological Museum) which contains a wealth of objects and remains from the past, among which many of great value. By means of shards and small, pre-nuragic statues, copper ingots, nuragic bronze statuettes and pottery, inscriptions, Phoenician pottery and funerary ornaments, steles (one of the most important collections in the world) and splendid Punic jewellery, the Museum reconstructs the passage of the different ancient cultures that peopled the island's pre-history and history. Of special interest are the objects found during the excavation of the Nora and Tuvixeddu burial sites (objects of Punic origin or imported from Greece, Spain and other parts of Italy), the rich collection of ceramics and earthenware, glass, statues and Roman sarcophagi, and medieval gold jewellery; the Pinacoteca Nazionale (National Art Gallery) contains, together with a small collection of contemporary art and sculpture, tapestries, coats of arms, religious objects and paintings. The retables represent the most interesting part of the collection, since they offer a panoramic view of the best in Sardinian culture, from the initial penetration of the Catalan and Valencian style up to the products of the local school of Cavaro and the "Stampace School" connected with it; the Museo Siamese (Siamese Museum) includes coins, ivory objects, porcelain and weapons of Asian origin, from the 11th to the 19th centuries. The Collezione delle Cere (Wax Collection) houses 23 wax anatomical models created by the famous Florentine wax sculptor Clemente Susini in the 19 th
century.Palazzo Belgrano in Via Università has on display the Gabinetto delle Stampe (Print Room), which contains a series of photomechanical reproductions of 19th
century volumes and woodcuts by 20th century Sardinian artists; the Collezione Piloni (Piloni Collection): a collection of paintings, prints and etchings with landscapes of Cagliari and Sardinia, which also includes traditional Sardinian tapestries and carpets.The Cittadella dei Musei (Piazza Arsenale tel. 070 200 24 10) and the Botanical Garden (Viale Sant'Ignazio, tel. 070 675 35 1511) are run by the University of Cagliari.

RELIGION
The Roman Catholic religion is the official religion in Italy, but other religious faiths – like the Baptist Evangelical Church, the Greek Orthodox Church, the Jehovah’s witniesses, Hare Krishna and others – are present in Cagliari.
SHOPPING CENTRES
With the opening of four modern shopping centres just outside Cagliari, shops in the old part of town are now going through a period of decline. Shopping centres are open continuously from 9 am to 9 pm, while other shops open from 9 am to 1 pm and from 4:30 to 8 pm. Pharmacies are also open at these hours in the morning, while in the afternoon they close at 7 pm.

The new regulations introduced with the reform require the knowledge and the use of related terms as well as the terminology already in use among university students:Appello d'esameThe date of the exam. The list of the days, the place and the timetables (examinations calendar) is displayed on the degree Programme notice board.AteneoSynonym of the word "University".Attività formativaLectures, seminars, practical workshops or laboratory work, educational activities in small groups, orientation, tutorials, training, essays, the activities of individual study and of self-learning. In general, it is any activity organized or expected by the University to guarantee cultural and professional education to students.ClasseThe whole of the Degree Programmes, defined by specific ministerial decrees, which have the same qualifying educational goals and the necessary consequent educational activities. It is the whole of the different first and second degree courses.CurriculumIt is the whole of educational activities, both at university and outside, specified in the degree Programme regulation in order to obtain the relevant qualification. Academic courses can be identified within curricula.Corsi di laurea e corsi di laurea specialisticaA degree Course is a three-year study course, composed by a definite number of lectures and by other educational activities (training, workshops, etc.). At the end, students can access second degree courses, which last two years.Crediti formativiThey measure the workload required to pass an exam; they indicate the achievement of the knowledge of the topic of a course unit. A credit normally corresponds to 25 hours of work, including attendane to lectures and seminars, individual study, training, workshops. A course/module corresponds to a certain number of credits, defined according to the degree of difficulty and of the required effort for that subject.Diritto allo studioIt expresses the right to use the services that facilitate university life. The services include: rooms in halls of residence, study rooms, grants based on merit and income, exemption from fees, job opportunities (150 hours collaboration) in university structures.Dottorati di ricercaStudents can access research doctorates after obtaining a second degree. It is one of the highest qualifications conferred by the University.

ErasmusThe Erasmus programme allows students to spend a term or a year in a European University and to sit exams, which will also be recognized in Italy.EsameExam (written or oral) to be taken at the end of a course/module.FacoltàThe Faculties group the various Degree Programmes together. In Cagliari we have 10 Faculties: Economics, Pharmacy, Law, Humanities and Philosophy, Foreign Languages and Literature, Engineering, Medicine and Surgery, Education Sciences, Mathematical Physical and Natural Sciences, Political Sciences.Laurea (first degree)It can be obtained at the end of a three-year Degree Course, after passing the exams and a final test.Laurea specialistica (second degree)Students can access it after obtaining a first degree. Second degrees last two years and require a final dissertation. For some Degree Courses (Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies, Building Engineering-Architecture) the student will register directly for a first/second degree "a ciclo unico". LibrettoThe booklet where we find the student registration number, registration year, the list of passed exams and the grade obtained.MasterSpecialising courses that can be attended after a first degree or a second degree. We have first level and second level Master’s degrees. Generally admission to Master’s is limited to a restricted number of students.MatricolaThe term defines students registered for the first time at University (Freshers). See also registration number.Numero chiuso e programmatoSome Degree Programmes have limited access to a restricted number of students who are selected through an entry test. At the moment, students, after their first degree, can continue their studies with a second degree or a first level Master’s.
