"Sheep Brain Lab 2012"Name: Class Period 5 6 7
Lab Procedures: / 4 IntroductionThe brain is broken up into a variety of sections. We are going to discuss these sections and the different lobes of the brains importance. I will point out differences between the human and sheep brain to better help you connect the structures.
Explain why you are doing this experiment in relation to the human brain. Sheep Brains Day 1 Guidelines1. Today we will be covering parts of the brain and their functions2. Record observations about your lab procedures and the relationships you have seen.
Observations This section should include only those things that you saw, heard, touched, or smelled
List one or more functions of each lobe.Frontal Lobe
Parietal Lobe
Temporal Lobe
Occipital Lobe
Label the four lobes of the brain:
Draw and Label the brain from each of these Directional views:\Label ONLY the Cerebrum, Cerebellum and Brainstem
Dorsal Ventral
Lateral Sagittal
3. Gather your materials. Work in Groups of FOUR4. Rinse the brain under a slow stream of running water.5. Place your brain on TWO sheets of paper towel6. Identify the cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem. Describe their color and appearance
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Brain Stem
7. Record observations about your lab procedures and the relationships you have seen.8. Write group members names in permanent marker on your zip lock bag.9. Fold the paper towel to enclose all the parts of the dissected brain. Place this in the bag
and return to the front counter.10. Wash the dissecting board and other dissecting materials into the soap baths. DO NOT
WASH THE SCALPEL; this will be done for you.11. Dry materials and put them back on the counter in their correct bins.
Observations This section should include only those things that you saw, heard, touched, or smelled The goal of this section is to present the data that was collected in the activity in a clear
and easily understood format.Write down 5 physical characteristics of your sheep brain. (how it feels, color of the brain)1. (WEIGHT SHOULD BE ONE OF THESE!)

Sheep Brains Day 2 Guidelines12. Gather your materials. Work in groups of FOUR TO BEGIN13. Place your brain on TWO sheets of paper towel14. Notice that the cerebrum consists of two parts called hemispheres. Use the scalpel to
separate the two hemispheres and then cut the brain in half lengthways.
15. Sketch what you see and write TWO sentences to describe this.
16. Make a midline cut once you have identified ALL of the external structures. 17. Use your probe and gently tear along the longitudinal fissure. If you peer down into
the cavity, you will see the corpus callosum, the main relay for information passing from one hemisphere to the other.
18. Cut so you get a semetrical cut in one smooth slice using enough pressure to cut with one smooth pass of the blade. If both sides are not identical, ask for help
19. Divide into TWO groups for the remainder of the dissection.
Label the Midline Anatomy:Lateral Ventricle, Corpus Callosum, Thalamus, Spinal Cord, Medulla, Pons, Frontal Cortex, cerebellum
20. Be sure not to rip or tear anyother tissue.21. Record observations about your lab procedures and the relationships you have seen.22. Now cut two more medial cuts

Day 3 Guidelines
Sheep Brains Day 3 Guidelines5. In groups of two, get all of your materials and take them to your lab table. 6. Be sure to have your goggles on.7. Place your brain on TWO sheets of paper towel8. Make a Coronal Section cuts once you have identified ALL of the external structures and
