Sheffield United 1-1 Cardiff City – match report

The Blades and the Bluebirds played out a very entertaining and dramatic draw at Bramall Lane on Easter Monday.

Leon Clarke's first goal since New Year's Day was not enough to end Cardiff's now 13 game unbeaten run as Anthony Pilkington cancelled it out with an injury time strike.

United were the first to cause danger in the opening couple of minutes as Stevens drove into the box and chipped to the back post but Lundstram's header was straight at Etheridge and he saved comfortably.

The deadlock would be broken on 28 minutes as United built up their play patiently around the penalty area with Lundstram eventually finding CLARKE who turned and fired with his left foot and found the bottom corner with the help of a deflection to put the Blades ahead.

As half time approached Chris Wilder's men continued to pile on the on the pressure with the most noteworthy action being Stearman's header being cleared off the line by Bennett following a Fleck corner.

A golden chance came United's way at the start of the second half when Fleck found Evans in acres of space inside the box but the Welsh international couldn't get his shot away and Etheridge came out to clear the danger.

Moments later the Bluebirds very nearly found themselves level with a quick succession of chances, first Gunnarsson fired just wide after a great run and the Moore was called into action to deny Zohore's powerful strike.

It was blink and you miss it action at Bramall Lane at this stage with Lundstram firing just over after Baldock's clever lay off as the atmosphere turned electric.

With 15 minutes remaining the Blades almost had the game put to be as a quick free kick caught the Cardiff players napping but Donaldson could only turn a low Stevens cross on to the post.

As the final minutes approached yet another chance came United's way this time a counter attack seeing Stevens crossing to the front post for Clarke to meet but Etheridge made a great save to deny the forward his second of the game.

In the first minute of added time Cardiff made United rue their missed chances as a long free kick saw the ball bounce around in the air for it to eventually land to PILKINGTON who volleyed into the corner to restore parity late on and send Neil Warnock's men back to Wales with a point.

Post match Neil Warnock spoke on how ecstatic his team were to get a point: “If you walked past our dressing room now you'd have thought we've won the World Cup!”

Blades boss Chris Wilder was a much more disappointed but still hopeful man after the final whistle, he said: “If we keep playing this way we'll be tough opposition for anyone that comes up against us.”
