IntroductionThis report aims to quantify and compare the statistics of the study abroad trends for Grand Valley
State University during the 2015-2016 Academic Year. The population in this data includes information an
undergraduate and graduate students that have participated for credit experiences abroad in program types
include: GVSU Partnership, non- GVSU, Faculty- Led, internships, or independent study programs. All students
received Grand Valley State University credit for their study abroad experience. The data in this report were
collected from the Padnos International Center’s OASIS application platform, which first included the ability to
report information in 2008.
With the data we have, we conclude that the total number of Grand Valley State University students
that participated in study abroad increased compared to the previous year (by 21%). During Academic Year
2015-2016, 749 Grand Valley State University students participated in study abroad programs (increased by
21% from the previous year). These programs include 54 countries, spanning over eight regions. Consistent
with national trends, Europe was the most popular continent for students with 59% of all participants. Spain is
the most popular destination, with an 11% participation rate. At Grand Valley State University, female
students consisted of 77% of total participation in studying abroad, while males consisted of only 23% of total
participation.
