A message from Fr. Barrett
The Lord be with you!
Lent begins this week on February 17th with Ash Wednesday. We will observe Ash Wednesday with a Mass at noon and 7pm. The Eucharist and imposition of ashes will be offered on Ash Wednesday. We will also observe the Stations of the Cross every Friday at noon. There will be no soup suppers and midweek worship this year. The forty days of Lent go from February 17th to Easter Sunday on April 4th. Only Monday-Saturday is counted as days in Lent. Sundays, even during Lent, are considered celebration days observing the resurrection of our Lord. Fellowship is held to a minimum during Lent. Baptisms, confirmation, weddings, ordinations, and any other celebratory rites of the Church, are not done during Lent. Baptisms are recommended near the end of Lent at the Easter Vigil.
Forty is symbolic in scripture as a time of testing and preparation. The Great Flood lasted forty days and nights. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and received the Ten Commandments. Jesus was tested by Satan in the wilderness for forty days before starting his ministry. Lent always begins with Ash Wednesday. Ashes are a symbol of mourning and repentance in the Bible. In the Old Testament there is frequent reference to tearing of garments and putting ashes on the head as a sign of repentance and mourning.

During the Ash Wednesday liturgy, ashes are imposed with the words “from dust you came and to dust you shall return.” This reminds us of the first man in the Old Testament, Adam. The name comes from the Hebrew word for dirt or soil. It literally means “dirt man or earth man.” We are reminded that the wages of sin are death as Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans. The ashes remind us that we will return to the ground and dust. This would be God’s last word if not for the blood of Christ. Paul wrote in Romans that “as death entered the world through one man (Adam), life entered the world through one Man (Jesus Christ). So we begin our Lent journey with Adam and end on Easter with our Lord. Pope Francis recently said that during Lent we should strive to abandon idolatry as well as the “self-sufficiency of our ego and to acknowledge our need of the Lord and his mercy.”
It is customary to give up something in Lent as a voluntary fast. By making this small sacrifice, our attention is drawn to Christ’s sacrifice to free us from the wrath of the law. Our fast is also a sign of solidarity with Christ’s requirement to be one of his disciples. “If any want to be become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Mk. 8:34b) It is well and good to give up something during Lent, but also consider taking up something. The three pillars of Christian worship are: fasting, Word and Sacrament, and prayer. During Lent consider adding additional time with the Lord in prayer and worship. Even during these Covid restrictions, there are opportunities to do this. One is the Stations of the Cross every Friday at noon during Lent. Also, the outdoor Stations of the Cross are not limited to Good Fridays in Lent. You can walk the stations anytime or just sit on the bench by the Celtic cross in prayer and meditation. Another opportunity is the maze behind the church. Suggestions concerning the maze can be found in this newsletter. There are also the additional worship occasions of Ash Wednesday and Holy Week. By all means consider a Lent fast, but besides giving up something, consider adding to your spiritual life during Lent.

Welcome to the Labyrinth Walk (#1)
The Labyrinth is a single, spiraling path that leads to a central area. You walk the same path back out returning to the beginning. There are no tricks or dead ends unlike mazes.
The Walk – There are three stages to the walk:
The Walk to the Center – Releasing, Letting Go – We release or let go whatever we need to and those things that are no longer serving us or others.
At the Center – Receiving – A place of meditation and prayer. The center is a place to pause for a while and be open to receiving whatever you need. It is a place of listening and sensing what needs or wants to emerge with in you or within a situation or issue you are reflecting on.
The Walk Back – Return and Integration – We crystallize the insight or idea and return to the world renewed and empowered. The return path is the start of embodying this new insight or way of being.
Guidelines for the Walk (#1)
There is no right or wrong way to walk or move in a labyrinth. Do what is right and natural for you. One way is to use a ‘mantra’ (a statement or slogan repeated frequently). Below are examples of some mantras:
1. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
2. “Jesus is Lord of all.” (Acts 10:36)
3. “The Lord is near to all who call on him.”) Psalm 145:18)
4. “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)
5. “This is the day the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)
6. “All things work together for good.” (Romans 8:28)
7. “Jesus loves me.” (John 3:16)
8. “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of god, have mercy on me.”
Church Now Features Beautiful Windows
Thanks to Parishioners and Other Churches
(Up-Date)
Christmas came early to members of The Episcopal Church of the Advent. Parishioners and guests at the candlelight Christmas Eve service were the first to see the church’s newly-installed stained glass windows.
These stunning windows are located behind the altar and provide a beautiful focal point for prayer and meditation.
Once removed from St. Peter’s by the Sea in South Daytona Beach, which was demolished, the windows were given to St. Margaret’s Church in Inverness. Several years passed, and the windows which were not needed there, were offered to other churches in the area.
In April of 2016, members of the Episcopal Church of the Advent Cursillo, a movement to empower members through prayer, study and action, travelled to St. Margaret’s Church in Inverness to participate in Ultreya, to gather groups from this region to maintain the Cursillo spirit. The priest at St. Margaret’s showed the participants the stained-glass windows and said the church had several they did not need. When Episcopal Church of the Advent Cursillo members returned to their home church, they reported on the offer of the stained-glass windows, and parishioners realized the windows would enhance the interior of their church and said yes to the donation.
The windows remained in storage for several years until a trio of parishioners — Paul McGuckin, Russ Peloquin and John Menning designed and built frames and assembled the windows. Those who saw the work in process wondered about the team’s collective vision. “It looked like they were building boats,” Paul’s wife Nancy said with a smile. However, the team was successful in constructing their vision.
“It was an interesting project,” McGuckin said. “It was scary handling the stained glass because each window had three pieces of very delicate glass.”
The three-man team worked to build a mold to bend the wood for frames and contracted with Cubby’s Art Studio in Dunnellon to refurbish the windows and to use some of the glass in the smaller windows to fill in the space at the bottom or the windows where there were gaps because those sections once opened. The team also installed led lighting to illuminate the windows from within.
The result of the trio’s combined vision and efforts, the gifts from two other churches and support from others are true examples of what can be accomplished with faith and vision. The windows will now serve as the focus of the church’s building fund for the parish hall.
Founded in January 1991, The Episcopal Church of the Advent admonishes existing members and others to explore their talents and gifts and find their niche at the church. McGuckin, Peloquin, Menning and others have done just that.
In addition, McGuckin, who is newly-retired and is the church’s Senior Warden, recently constructed a labyrinth behind the church. If you need a few moments to meditate and find peace, take a walk there and view the windows as well.
