PENTECOST 2020

Dearly Beloved, PENTECOST which was traditionally called Whit Sunday, is the birthday of the Church – when the long-promised Comforter came upon the apostles gathered in prayer, as had become their post resurrection custom. The reading from the Acts of the Apostles leaves us in no doubt as to the remarkable impact. Suddenly a group of fairly inarticulate men were transformed into polyglot communicators. St Luke lists some of those in the audience, all who could understand what was being said.

The traditional understanding is that the Apostles were granted the gift of tongues, in that they discovered an ability to speak in a language hitherto unknown. That is thought of as being one of the gifts of the spirit and was quite a thing amongst charismatic Christians a few years ago (although by no means confined to them). But as St Paul said, there was no use of speaking tongues if nobody understood. The gift was not a mark of of special favour, just given for the sake of it! Indeed, the Holy Spirit himself, as well as being the comforter, was and is the giver of fortitude – the advocate, the one who, as

Jesus promised, would fill the believer with words when the time of justification came.

I believe that there is also another side to this, which is, perhaps easy to miss. In listing the various tongues, Luke is in fact pointing out that people from all the known world could understand. Indeed, perhaps more people than apostles. If you think about it, had all of the apostles been all speaking at the same time to the crowd in different languages, whilst people might have made out the occasional word, the noise of the others would have drowned it all out. Luke does not paint a picture of lots of people talking at once, but rather a message that all people of many languages understand.

The Holy Spirit, then, did not just give the apostles an ability that they didn’t have before, but, more importantly, gives the ability to impart the gospel. This is important when we consider that special birthday, for the Holy Spirit is the means by which Christ is communicated – that is given and received. The Holy Spirit was working in that crowd so that the people understood, and in the event, believed.

In that way, God’s communication is manifold, in that He brings himself into our lives in many ways. We know about Sacraments, which are solely effected by the power of the Spirit. The reading of Scripture too should be spirit filled, since if not it becomes little more than a study of ancient (and at times strange) literature belonging to an age far apart from our own. However, if we approach the bible as we do the sacraments; that is, in prayer and openness to the Holy Spirit, then those black and white words come alive. As one who has to preach on very familiar texts, I find so often that when I go back to them, something new jumps out – God is

saying something new. The words are the same. It is just that todays message is fresh!

The Church of Christ is there to communicate him to the world. It does this by word, action and prayer. It also does it through art, architecture and music, and indeed every creative gift of humanity, since in our creativeness we merely reflect our own creator and share in that grace of creation. At this time were are given the chance to reflect upon that; upon what our place is in this great family of God and indeed how we might be employed in that mission of creativity.

With every blessing,Fr Anthony

WHEN the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues, like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them: and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed, and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

GOSPEL St John 14: 15- end

JESUS said unto his disciples, If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me,

and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, (not Iscariot,) Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do.

OTHER PRAYERS

Spiritual communion

LORD Jesus, I believe that thou art spiritually present in the Holy Sacrament of the altar. I love thee above all things and I desire that may I receive thee to myself. Come now spiritually unto my soul so that I may be united with thee, both now and forever. Amen.

St John Henry Newman
