Task 6 – Annotate the lyrics below. Your notes should provide details of the case and its impact on America. You should also note down background information about race relations that are mentioned in the song.

Was down in Mississippi not so long agoWhen a young boy from Chicago town

Walked in a Southern door

This boy's fateful tragedyYou all should remember well

The colour of his skin was blackAnd his name was Emmett Till

Some men, they dragged him to a barnAnd there they beat him upThey said they had a reason

But I just can't remember what

They tortured him and did some thingsToo evil to repeat

There were screaming sounds inside the barnThere was laughing sounds out on the street

Then they rolled his body down a gulfAmidst a blood red rain

And they threw him in the waters wideTo cease his screaming pain

The reason that they killed him thereAnd I'm a-sure, it ain't no lie

'Cause he was born in black-skin barnHe was born to die

And then to stop the United StatesOf yelling for a trial

Two brothers, they confessedThat they had killed poor Emmett Till

But on the jury there were menWho had helped the brothers commit this awful crime

And so this trial was a mockeryBut nobody there seemed to mind

4

I saw the morning papersBut I could not bear

To see smiling brothersWalkin' down the courthouse stairs

For the jury found them innocentAnd the brothers, they went free

While Emmett's body floats the foamOf a Jim Crow southern sea

If you can't speak out against this kind of thingA crime that's so unjust

Your eyes are filled with dead men's clayYour ears must be filled with dust

Your arms and legsThey must be in shackles and chainsAnd your mind, it must cease to flow

For you to let our human raceFall down so God-awful low

Task 7 – How far do Source A and B agree about the impact of the Emmett Till case?Source A – Muhammed Ali, boxer.

Source B - Congressman Charles Diggs

Emmett Till and I were about the same age. A week after he was murdered . . . I stood on the corner with a gang of boys, looking at pictures of him in the black newspapers and magazines. In one, he was laughing and happy. In the other, his head was swollen and bashed in, his eyes bulging out of their sockets and his mouth twisted and broken. His mother refused to let him be buried until hundreds of thousands marched past his open casket in Chicago and looked down at his mutilated body. [I] felt a deep kinship to him when I learned he was born the same year and day I was. My father talked about it at night and dramatised the crime. I couldn’t get Emmett out of my mind.

I think the picture in Jet magazine showing Emmett Till’s mutilation was probably the greatest media product in the last forty or fifty years because that picture stimulated a lot of interest and anger on the part of blacks all over the country.

Task 1 – Complete the notes about the Sit-ins

Task 2 – Compare the views in Source B and C on the success of the Sit-ins.

Source B

Some Civil Rights workers believed that the sit-ins showed students that they could take action themselves. Young black people realised that they could make a difference to Civil Rights by winning the support of both black and white Americans. However, sit-ins only achieved limited success in some of the towns and cities where the protests were used. Much more needed to be done to improve Civil Rights.

The very act of protesting meant the students believed they could make a difference. When they “sat in” these young people practiced non-violence, they dressed in their best clothes and they studied books. This helped to encourage black community support and won the respect and even admiration of some white Americans. However, the sit-ins only enjoyed success in a few Southern states. In the Deep South, white Americans refused to desegregate and the protestors faced resistance from the white authorities.
