I. Course Description:

Welcome to Global History & Geography II. This course covers world events, world history, and geography from 1750 to the present day. (That’s everything except the United States, Canada and Australia!) You will be tested on only Global II material on the Regents exam in June, but we will regularly reference pertinent information that you learned in Global I to enhance understanding of current material. This year will be only the second year for a new test format on the Regents exam. As Global I students, you were already exposed to many of these changes and we will work hard on them throughout the year to ensure your success.

II. Grading & Homework:

The grades for Global II include a combination of homework, projects (both in and out of class), tests, and participation. The final grade in Global II will consist of the average of all four marking period grades and the final Regents exam.

All homework assignments and due dates will be listed weekly on the whiteboard and in Google Classroom. Students are required to write these assignments in their planners at the beginning of each week and are responsible for completing the work and handing them in on the due dates. Daily homework assignments will be checked and reviewed in class on the due dates and so must be completed for that day.

Assignments like projects and writing assignments will lose 10% for each day after the due date they are turned in. Once these assignments are corrected and handed back to the class, late work will not be accepted even with a point reduction.

There is a lot of information in this course, so learner engagement and organization are important. Each quarter you will receive a maximum 100-point participation grade. This grade will be based on how prompt and prepared you are for class each day. It is also based upon how much you join in the learning process and respect others in the classroom.

If you have been absent, you are expected to take the initiative to ask for all missed assignments and turn them in promptly.

Please feel free to see me for extra help. Arrangements can be made to meet with me during free periods or after school – your success is important to me.

Global History & Geography II Guidelines

Plagiarism should be understood as any of the following: 1. taking directly, word for word, anything from a source and putting it in your paper without citation and the use of quotation marks, 2. taking the ideas presented in a source and putting them in your own words (e.g. paraphrase or re-arranging words) without citation, 3. taking another student’s paper and using his/her ideas or direct words, or 4. allowing anyone to copy your work. Any incidents of plagiarism will result in an academic penalty and a grade of zero will be assigned.

III. Course Supplies: The following supplies should be purchased as soon as possible. All of these items need to be brought to every class along with your planner.

3-ring notebook, at least 2” in diameter 10-12 notebook dividers (refer to front page for section titles) pens (blue or black only)

V. Communication:

Parents/Guardians:

If at any time during the school year you have any questions or problems, please call the school at 631-7481 ext. 6223 and leave me a voice message I will return your call as soon as possible. I have also included my school e-mail address if that is a better mode of communication for you. Check your child’s planner for homework assignments. I also encourage you to use the E-School Parent Portal. This enables you to view all assignments and also your child’s progress in Global II. I look forward to teaching your child this year and to meeting you. I will try to contact you with any praise or concerns I may have about your child. Please sign and return the last page of this packet. The information will be extremely helpful to me in keeping the lines of communication open.

Thank you, Mrs. [email protected]

CLASS EXPECTATIONS: What Students Can Expect of Me

I care about my students. I will treat you with respect.

I believe all students can learn social studies. I will be persistent in encouraging my students to make their best effort.

I will work very hard for my students. I will make myself available before and after school for extra help.

I will encourage my students to think for themselves and understand varying perspectives on world events and ideas.

I will be consistent and fair in applying rules and maintaining our class routine.

What I Expect of My Students

Work in class by paying attention, participating, and asking questions. Take risks by making mistakes!

Work outside of class by doing any assigned work, preparing for tests, quizzes, or projects to the best of your ability, and again, asking any questions whenever they arise. Remember, grades are achieved, not received.

Everyone should be in his/her seat and ready to work when the class starts. This means that getting materials, using the restroom, sharpening pencils, and socializing should be completed before class begins.

Be prepared . Bring your packet, a writing implement, your planner and your brain to class each day.

No one should disrupt the learning process in any way, shape or form. Respect others when they are talking and raise a hand to speak. Do not shout out answers unless the teacher asks you to do so. Leave other people’s belongings alone.

Be a productive and cooperative group member. No one wants to work with a student who is distracting or lazy.

If you have been absent, ask for missed work and upcoming assignments promptly.

Do not ask another student if you can copy their homework. This will result in a zero for both of you. Always do your own best work.

No use of headphones, iPods, cell phones, or other electronics in classroom.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM

Each Global II class has a “classroom” in Google. Throughout the school year you will be expected to access the homework page which is updated every week. You will also be connected to vocabulary lists, homework assignments, study guides, videos, and much more. You can access Google from your smart phone or any computer.
