Brief Description of the Event:
Dr. Dayaram Patel Pharmacy College had organized a Thalassemia camp on 29th November
2019. On this day, the students of first and second year Diploma Pharmacy were gathered for
their thalassemia test. Two Representatives of the Indian Red Cross Society, Gujarat State
Branch have visited the college for the same. Arrangements were made to collect the blood
samples of students for the test. Before collecting the samples, the students were explained in
detail about the significance of the test and the awareness of Thalassemia in community.
The whole camp was conducted smoothly.
Major Outcomes of Event:
As Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body makes an abnormal type of
haemoglobin, it results into in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to anaemia. So it
becomes more important to have an awareness of the Thalassemia test in community, institutions etc.
The Thalassemia test was done of total 44 students of the institute “Dr. Dayaram Patel Pharmacy College,
Bardoli”. Out of which 18 were female and 26 were male students. A total of 12 female and 12 male
students had negative test for the typical Beta Thalassemia. But one male candidate has a suggestive of
Sickle cell trait. Two of female and one of the male candidates have found to have suggestive of Sickle
Cell Trait with co-existence of or co-inheritance of alpha thalassemia. One male candidate has been found
to have suggestive of Typical Beta Thalassemia Minor.
