Reading Intervention Group – Read, Write Inc. Introduction Reading feeds the imagination, it expands horizons and offers new and exciting ways of seeing and making sense of our lives and of the world around us Michael Morpurgo “If ye cannie read the green words, you cannie read the book” This year we will be using the Ruth Miskin’s Read, Write Inc. as an intervention programme to support children with their reading. Read, Write Inc. is a systematic phonics programme that works sequentially through sounds so that children can read every word in the book. At school in our reading groups we will revise sounds (phonics), read for accuracy, then for fluency and then finally for comprehension. The programme also includes dictations of words and sentences to support spelling. It’s essential that children have an emotional engagement with reading and continue to read for pleasure, are read to and experience a wide range of vocabulary, music and storytelling alongside this programme. How can you help with literacy at home? Read to your child at home and share reading that you love. Make comments about what you are reading and build conversations with your child. Questions with ‘right’ answers can cause overwhelm. Small amounts of quality reading and practice associated with fun and love are best. It’s better to have little and often rather that a long, tiring practice. 1

Reading Intervention Group – Read, Write Inc. Introduction

Reading feeds the imagination, it expands horizons and offers new and exciting ways of seeing and making sense of our lives and of the world around us

Michael Morpurgo

“If ye cannie read the green words, you cannie read the book” This year we will be using the Ruth Miskin’s Read, Write Inc. as an intervention programme to support children with their reading.

Play word and vocabulary and memory games Make signs together, display words where your child will see them (doors, fridges, lists)

Guide to Vocabulary Common Words – These are the most frequent words in the English Language. Also known as Fry’s List. Dot and Dash – sounds that have one letter get a dot. Sounds with more than one letter get a dash. We use this to mark the spelling.

Fred Talk – Fred is a frog who can only speak in sounds. The children blend the sounds into a word. e.g. Fred ate a c/a/t. Fred/Finger Spell – Use your fingers to show how many sounds are in the word e.g. day = /d /ay /2 sounds so you show 2 fingers and pinch them with the writing hand to represent the 2 sounds. Green words – Each sound has a list of green words linked to it, so your child can ‘sound out’ and ‘sound blend’ words e.g. ay s-p-r-ay spray. Red (tricky) words – Words that we can’t sound out, we just have to know them. Sound Chart – Edinburgh Complex Speed Sounds Chart – this shows the letters that represent the sounds and supports all children with reading and writing. There is also a Read, Write Inc. chart. Set 2 Sounds These sounds are two or three letters that make one sound. ‘special friends’. Each sound has a picture prompt linked to the ‘speed sound’ and a short phrase to help us remember it e.g. ay - May I play?

Speed sounds – individual sounds. They are called ‘Speed sounds’ because we want your child to read them effortlessly.

Speed Sounds

These are a copy of the pictures from Ruth Miskin’s Read Write Inc. Speed Sounds Set 2 and 3. We use these as a reference for the sounds and spelling. Each sound has a picture, phrase and list of

The children may remember actions for these sounds from Primary 1 and 2 and it’s good to practice these too to help remember them. We will practise one or two sounds at a time and write words with this sound in them.
