1 st Swansea Scout Group 1928 This history of our Group has taken many months of hard work going through loads of paper work. Unfortunately as you will see there are many years where there is no information at all. As well in some instances I have had to surmise (in italics) that a certain leader/committee person held that position in that year. If you are reading through & find any errors or omissions I would be very grateful if you could jot these down on the spare pages at the back of this book. My information has been taken from Group records, District records, Area & Branch records & word of mouth. In many instances numbers, Leaders names & committee persons were taken either from census papers, computer printouts, annual meeting reports, district records, signed letters & notes but where I had nothing to work with I have surmised that what I have written is correct. Again if this is not so I would ask you to correct my summations with the correct names etc. It wasn’t till Helen Shrimpton spoke to me that I found out that Helen was the 2 nd Swansea Cub Leader & her husband Ken was the Field Commissioner for this area as well as the Acting Scout Leader for 2 nd Swansea Scout. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people for all the help they have given me in compiling this history. I have been extremely excited at finding out what leaders & committee people have done to help make us the Group we are today & also a little sad that records over the years have gone missing or that more detailed records have not been kept. It has also been very rewarding speaking to people about our Group. Thankyou to my husband Kevin & my boys who have put up with me over the past twelve months while I have been putting this together. To Mary Crawford, Aileen Gardner, Shirley Tait, Judy & Jeff Tait, Jean Hattander, Margaret Hancock, Jack Porter, Eileen Thoroughgood, Edna Rennard & Ken & Helen Shrimpton, thankyou all for the wealth of information that you have supplied to me. I really hope that you get as much enjoyment out of reading this as I have putting it all together. Yours in Scouting Diane Bellette

Scout Master : Tom Shepherd, Wal Thoroughgood

Group Committee office bearers:President : Mr A. GoodwinSecretary : Edna Rennard

1st Swansea was a Sea Scout Troop

June Wal Thoroughgood transferred in from 1st North Lake Macquarie as Scout Master.

1st Swansea Sea Scout hall was moved to the present block of land. Our hall was originally the old picture show hall at Catherine Hill Bay, which was donated, to Rotary by J & A Brown & Abermain-Seaham Collieries Ltd. The building, a hall with a kitchen in an upper story was re-built by Swansea Rotary Club & Scout parents in their spare time. The hall was put in trust to the Lake Macquarie Municipal Council for the sole use of Swansea Scouts. The reason for the trust is because we are on public reserve land.

If it had not been for Mr Dick Gobert & Tom Woods (Glenn Woods – Queen Scout) we would not have a hall. The area they chose at the time was isolated and a large area of marshland near the lake was filled with excess mine fill so that mobile cranes could help the voluntary workers re-erect the building.

The Lake Macquarie Shire President at the time – Mr Pendlebury – was a very approachable man and well known for getting things done by word of mouth. He gave his blessing to the Scout movement for their ingenuity and Swansea Scout hall became a reality. With all the good intentions and work apparently there was not sufficient paper work done to formalise the land situation. This was to become a stumbling block for later group committees. (above in italics is an extract from a letter sent to me by Jack Richardson).

Mr & Mrs Rennard were on the Group committee but am not sure what positions they held

7th Sept 2007 – after a conversation with Helen Shrimpton – now 83 (Ken passed away 2006) it was Ken who founded 2nd Swansea Scout Group & chose our scarf.

He decided on the colour as most other Groups were blue as was 1st Swansea. The green in our scarf represents the grass & the gold the sun. Ken & Helen were associated with our Group for over 20 years. When 2nd Swansea was up & running many of the boys were unable to purchase uniforms, so Ken & Helen arranged with Scout Assoc in Sydney to supply the boys with a uniform, shoes & all. These were delivered to Newcastle Rail station & Ken had to pick them up.

drain property by gravity. They said they would consider application to pump effluent to existing sewer main.

Aug 16th Swansea Scout Group authorised Mr J. Richardson to raise floor level of hall to

This year saw the Group committee try to extend the Scout Hall and use it also as a Guide Hall and also have the sewer connected. They started this in this year but it was not until 1981 before they reached a compromise to the problem. (above in italics is an extract from a letter sent to me by Jack Richardson).

Apparently when the sewer system was eventually established in Swansea the Water & Sewer Board did not include the Scout Hall in the scheme because it was not officially on the town map. After much to-ing & fro-ing from both Council & the Scout movement the committee sat down with the then local Waterboard inspector & put in place a septic tank system with an automatic pump out system into the distant sewer main. Except for the installation of the tanks everything else was once again done by parents & leaders who gave what time they could to the project.
