June 2014

Dear Supporter

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I wish to thank you for your continued support of The John Young Foundation, in prayer, presence at events, and financial, and to take this opportunity to give you an update.

As you know, we rely entirely upon our supporters to enable us to continue to function and to seek to promote Christian Healing and to establish our aims to:

Serve as a Resource Centre for all wanting to know more of the Christian Healing Ministry Create opportunities for teaching and training and further growth in Christian pastoral care. Stimulate discussion between Religion and Medicine

The last twelve months have been exciting and challenging times with changes to staffing, and new accommodation to look forward to, as well as an event-filled calendar. Towards the end of 2013 our Administrative Assistant, Mrs Pauline Pittard, retired, and in January 2014 we welcomed our new Administrative Assistant, Mrs Michelle Adkins. Our Chairman, Revd Preb Graham Fowell, retired and his enormous contribution has been greatly missed. However, we are delighted to welcome our new Chairman, Revd David Primrose, who has agreed to a transitional period with the organisation. Please pray for a good settling in period and for the wealth of expertise and contacts that David brings with him. We also give thanks for Malcolm Kidd, who has agreed to act as an Independent Examiner to prepare our end of year accounts. We still seek a replacement Treasurer and ask for prayer for God’s guidance and our discernment on the appointment.

In May, June and July 2013 we held Quiet Days. Pat Marsh led 'Touching the Cloak' at Shallowford House in May, Dr Jane Gledhill led us on 'Our Journey with God' at Sandon Hall in June, Revd Chris Thorpe led ' Touching the Sacred' at St Mary's Abbey Colwich in July, and they were all very well attended and inspirational. We had two excellent events in September. The former Rector of St Mary's Collegiate Church, Stafford, Revd Preb Graham Fowell, led us on a thought-provoking Pilgrimage to Mount St Bernard Abbey in Leicestershire, then the following week we were treated to a 'Music and Spirituality' Day at Shallowford House, led by Margaret Outen, Director of Music at St Mary's. Our Annual Lecture took place in October 2013 with former Bishop of Stafford, Rt Revd Gordon Mursell, speaking on ‘Adoration:The Healing Power of Unconditional Love’, with unprecedented numbers turning out to hear a very stimulating talk. This was followed in November 2013 by our Annual Review and Healing Service, led by Executive Committee members Revd Cathy Dakin and Revd Marilyn Coulter, and poignantly held in the Pilgrim Chapel at Stafford Hospital. In January and February 2014 we had a real treat, four presentations on aspects of healing given by Revd Preb Roger M Vaughan, formerly the Bishop of Lichfield's Advisor in the ministry of healing, with excellent attendance at the Christ Church Centre, Stone.

In April 2014 we held another very successful and inspiring Quiet Day 'The Healing Power of Poetry' led by Revd Rod Clark at St Mary's Abbey Colwich, and in May we went on retreat to the beautiful Reflections Gardens in Cannock Wood led by Revd Chris and Mr John Polhill where we had a very spiritual day rounded off by a walk through the bluebell woods at Beaudesert. A new venture for us on 26th June is 'Painting from the Bible' led by Maggie Hatchard. We will be undertaking a Pilgrimage to Dovedale House in Ilam Derbyshire on 1st July, led by Revd Dr Jason Phillips. Our Annual Lecture is on 16th October at St Bertelin's Church, when we welcome Professor Wilf McSherry, speaking on ‘Dignity and spirituality: do they have a place in contemporary healthcare?’ We round off the year with our Annual Service which has still to be arranged.

In addition to these events, we have successfully run the Acorn Christian Healing Foundation’s ‘Listening for Life’ course during May and June. Four times a year we publish our ‘Shalom’ magazine, which is packed with interesting articles from a variety of contributors. This currently has a circulation of almost 400, with many of them via email, which is a recent alternative. We also publish a bi-monthly prayer diary and are grateful to all our prayer supporters.

We are all aware of the difficult financial situation at present, but this is the time of year when we ask you, our supporters, to consider your financial support of the Foundation. We do suggest at least £25.00 per year to enable us to carry on, and if you are a tax payer you can increase the value of your giving by gift aiding the amount. We then receive an extra 25 pence in the pound, and it all helps. Please enquire if you would like us to either email or post a gift aid form, which you can use either on a one-off basis, or when you fill it out ask that it cover all your donations until you instruct us to stop claiming the tax back.

If you have already contributed financially, please ignore that part of this letter, and please accept our sincere gratitude.

Thank you once again for your continued support, and please continue to pray for the organisation.

Yours sincerely
